A recent trial in older adults with anxiety symptoms in primary care found no differences in outcome between an ACT and CBT intervention. The current study aimed to identify moderators and non-specific predictors of treatment response to these two interventions. The sample consisted of 314 older adults who were randomized to either ACT or CBT. Anxiety symptom severity (measured with the GAD-7) was the main outcome variable. Demographics, (psycho)pathology, social support, and psychological processes were examined as predictors. No moderator variables were identified. More severe anxiety and de

Background: Perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms affect many women's well-being and quality of life. Digital technologies, especially smartphones, allow self-management interventions for menopausal symptoms, but they are understudied., Objective: We evaluated whether a novel digital care app, Caria, effectively reduced vasomotor and behavioral health symptoms of menopause., Methods: We enrolled 149 women for a 6-week randomized controlled trial (app treatment: n=112; web-based educational control: n=37). Enrolled participants had problematic vasomotor symptoms and at least one elevated behav

BACKGROUND: Online games developed to improve mental health symptoms are reportedly effective among game users. However, it has not been verified whether massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs) developed for leisure purposes are effective in improving users' mental health symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: Based on 2 theoretical frameworks, this study examined whether MMOGs improve depression and social anxiety. First, behavioral activation theory posits that depressive symptoms improve through the repetition of reward-linked behaviors. Second, inhibitory learning theory suggests that exposure to social s

Levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma-related distress, and subsyndromal PTSD, (here "PTS") among combat soldiers and first responders are of international concern. In the broader population, a PTS global epidemic is attending trauma associated with the threatscape of the Anthropocene (increased extreme weather events, natural disasters, conflict, rising poverty, emerging infectious disease) as well as the legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic. PTS is also a health economic burden, with costs associated with treatment, long-term morbidity, and increased risk of mortality. In the Pa

BACKGROUND: To assess the effect of age at hypospadias surgery on emotional and behavioural problems, somatic symptoms, irritability, and penile perception.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified the patients who underwent single distal hypospadias surgery and age-matched healthy controls were included. There were two further subgroups according to the age at the time of hypospadias repair (<2 vs. >2 years). The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), Affective Reactivity Index (ARI), Level 2 Somatic Symptom Scale, and Penile Pe

BACKGROUND: Community-dwelling residents at potential risk of dementia and their families have difficulty detecting symptoms of dementia during an outbreak of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). We explored the characteristics of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in community-dwelling persons at the first time of dementia diagnosis and identified their associated variables.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study using secondary data of dementia diagnosis tests was conducted. Data were reported by professional nurses and clinicians from 355 persons at the first time of dementia

Preterm birth has been linked with postpartum depressive (PPD) disorders and high symptom levels, but evidence remains conflicting and limited in quality. It remains unclear whether PPD symptoms of mothers with preterm babies were already elevated before childbirth, and whether PPD symptoms mediate/aggravate the effect of preterm birth on child mental disorders. We examined whether preterm birth associated with maternal PPD symptoms, depressive symptoms trajectories from antenatal to postpartum stage, and whether PPD symptoms mediated/aggravated associations between preterm birth and child men

BACKGROUND: Minority stress may lead to poorer mental health for sexual and gender minority adolescents, yet no interventions have been tested through an RCT to address these concerns.
METHODS: We report on an RCT of an intervention-Proud & Empowered-with four high schools. Measures assess the intervention's impact on mental health symptoms.
RESULTS: Compared to the control, participants in the treatment condition reported significant differences in minority stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Moderation analyses showed that the intervention significantly moderated the relationship bet

OBJECTIVE: Gender differences in the development and severity of PTSD have long been observed, but much less is known about gender differences within the context of trauma-focused treatment. This study investigated gender differences in the PTSD symptoms of polytraumatized youth during Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
METHOD: The sample included child welfare-involved youth ages 7-18 (N = 138) who experienced a mean of 4.78 types of trauma and received TF-CBT at a trauma treatment clinic. Mixed ANOVA analyses assessed gender differences in PTSD symptoms from baseline to t

BACKGROUND: People with Down syndrome (DS) are at high risk to develop Alzheimer's disease dementia (AD). Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common and may also serve as early signals for dementia. However, comprehensive evaluation scales for BPSD, adapted to DS, are lacking. Therefore, we previously developed the BPSD-DS scale to identify behavioral changes between the last six months and pre-existing life-long characteristic behavior.
OBJECTIVE: To optimize and further study the scale (discriminative ability and reliability) in a large representative DS study popul

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) challenge caregivers, leading to caregiver burden and subsequent nursing home or inpatient placement in a psychiatric hospital for dementia. Favorable positive emotions should be an important goal for the treatment of negative emotions of BPSD. Arts are one of the most profound areas to stimulate favorable emotions. We have asked a professional actor, who was not involved in the daily care and regular rehabilitations, to give a dramatic performance by reading selected stories as if the patients with BPSD felt to be in the audiences of a

OBJECTIVE: Although adult hoarding disorder is relatively common and often debilitating, few studies have examined the phenomenology of pediatric hoarding. We examined the clinical phenomenology and response to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment in youths with a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with and without hoarding symptoms. Age was tested as a moderator across analyses, given prior findings that the impact of hoarding symptoms may not become apparent until adolescence.
METHOD: Youths (N = 215; aged 7-17 years) with OCD pursuing evaluation and/or treatment at a

Older people usually present with adverse drug events (ADEs) with nonspecific symptoms such as cognitive decline, recurrent falls, reduced mobility, and/or major deterioration. The aims of this study were to assess the ADEs of patients with dementia and presenting neuropsychiatric/behavioral, and psychological symptoms in dementia (BPSD) and to categorize and identify the principal factors that allow to prevent ADEs, and separately ADEs that result in falls. To that end, a one-year prospective study in a psychogeriatric ward (July 2015 to July 2016) was performed. All patients admitted to this

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affects 5.2 million Americans in 2016 and this number will increase to 14.7 million by 2050. Unfortunately, AD cannot yet be prevented, slowed, or cured. Aerobic exercise is potentially therapeutic for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as it favorably affects brain structure and function. A critical determinant in testing its effectiveness is optimal adherence to the exercise prescription. AD symptoms, particularly behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), however, make exercise delivery and adherence challenging. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the stra

Clinical studies have shown that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remission, induced by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment, is associated with increased prefrontal activation during post-treatment symptom provocation. Other studies have shown that continuation SSRI treatment after remitting from PTSD reduces the rate of relapse. The aim of the present preclinical study was to investigate the relationship between post-treatment prefrontal changes and PTSD relapse prevention. Avoidance conditioning (with a 1.5-mA foot-shock), avoidance extinction and a trauma priming ex

The phenomenology of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) occurring in the Alzheimer's disease and related syndromes remains not well known. The goal of this study was to assess the role of disorders of personality, psychiatric disorders and home environment in the occurence of the BPSD; 99 inpatients from a short-term Alzheimer unit were included in the study. BPSD were assessed by the NeuroPsychiatric Inventory, the severity of dementia by the MMSE. Previous somatic, psychiatric and personality disorders were evaluated by a semi-structured interview of the family, and cla

Growing research confirms the efficacy of transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, that is treatments applicable across multiple diagnoses within a disorder class or spectrum, by examining group-level changes from pre- to posttreatment. However, less is known about interindividual differences and dynamic changes during therapy. Understanding different symptom trajectories and their associations with treatment outcome would allow early detection of nonresponders and treatment adjustments. Using data from the treatment group of a randomized controlled trial, we aimed to investigate tr

BACKGROUND: This study examined associations between different sources of chronic perceived stress and deleterious behaviors (eating disorder symptoms, insufficient sleep, and insufficient vigorous physical activity) among first-year college students.
METHODS: The study used data on 885 first-year students (ages 18-20) at a large public university in North Carolina. The prevalence of deleterious behaviors was evaluated. Associations were estimated between different sources of chronic perceived stress (academic, future, peers, friendships, romantic, appearance, health, chronic illness, financi
