In Sweden the pattern of consumption of hypnotics has changed over the last two decades in favour of benzodiazepines (BZ), at the expense, mainly, of barbiturates. The agents chosen in cases of self-induced poisoning relfect this altered pattern of consumption. Beta-Carboline (norharman), an antagonist of the benzodiazepine receptor, given daily at a dose of 20 mg/kg (i.p.), produces kindled seizures. The mechanism of this epileptogenesis is unknown; however, other ligands of the benzodiazepine receptor, i.e. diazepam, R015-1788 and CL218-872 block the expression of kindled seizures in a dose-dependent manner. The results suggest that beta-carboline kindling is mediated through the benzodiazepine receptor.

This study aims to evaluate the dependence potential of benzodiazepines in general practice. Amongst a sample of 1079 current general practice patients 87 (8.1 percent) were using benzodiazepines. Most of the users were middle to old age females and had chronic physical illnesses. OBJECTIVE: Benzodiazepine (BZD) dependence has become a social problem and results in poor outcomes. Only a few evidence-based treatments for pharmacotherapy, including antidepressants, are recommended.
METHODS: We reported about a 71-year-old man with onset of blindness at 50 years of age due to pigmentary degeneration of the retina developed insomnia at age 59 years, characterized by nocturnal and early morning awakenings.
