[The biocompatibility of catheters and stents used in urology].

Biocompatibility can be interpreted as the optimal combination of a series of interactions occurring at the material-tissue interface as soon as these two systems are in contact. It is a multifactorial interface property which integrates all of the phenomena involved in a biological environment i.e. absence of toxicity of the material for the body and absence of degradation of the material by the body. Biocompatibility can be evaluated in a normative context by using in vivo techniques in animals or in vitro techniques using cell cultures allowing the study of cytotoxicity (related to a concep

Investigation of copper dopedβ-TCP and GB14 coatings produced via high velocity suspension flame spraying-a biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity study.

Implant-associated infections and aseptic loosening of prosthesis due to insufficient secondary stability continue to present a challenging issue in arthroplasty. Potential solutions include bioactive coatings to promote osseointegration. With this in mind, this study aims to investigate and compare thin bioactive and bioresorbableβ-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and calcium alka-li orthophosphate (GB14) coatings, both produced via high velocity suspension flame spraying. To achieve an additional antibacterial effect and to prevent infections through aerosolized contamination, Cu-dopedβ-TCP supr

Copper-enriched hydroxyapatite coatings obtained by high-velocity suspension flame spraying. Effect of various gas parameters on biocompatibility.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-coated bone implants are frequently used for orthopaedic or dental implants since they offer high biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. Yet, problems such as infections, e.g. periprosthetic joint infections, occur when implanting foreign material into the body. In this study, HAp coatings were produced via high-velocity suspension flame spraying (HVSFS). This method allows for the production of thin coatings. We investigated the effects of different gas parameters on the coating properties and on the biocompatibility, which was tested on the human osteosarcoma cell line

Strong, tough and anisotropic bioinspired hydrogels.

Soft materials are widely used in tissue engineering, soft robots, wearable electronics, etc. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate soft materials, such as hydrogels, with both high strength and toughness that are comparable to biological tissues. Inspired by the anisotropic structure of biological tissues, a novel solvent-exchange-assisted wet-stretching strategy is proposed to prepare anisotropic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels by tuning the macromolecular chain movement and optimizing the polymer network. The reinforcing and toughening mechanisms are found to be "macromolecule crys

Optimized Electrophoretic Deposition of Chitosan/Mesoporous Glass Nanoparticles with Gentamicin on Titanium Implants: Enhancing Hemocompatibility and Antibacterial Activity.

Titanium-based implants have long been studied and used for applications in bone tissue engineering, thanks to their outstanding mechanical properties and appropriate biocompatibility. However, many implants struggle with osseointegration and attachment and can be vulnerable to the development of infections. In this work, we have developed a composite coating via electrophoretic deposition, which is both bioactive and antibacterial. Mesoporous bioactive glass particles with gentamicin were electrophoretically deposited onto a titanium substrate. In order to validate the hypothesis that the qua

Advanced mortar coatings for cultural heritage protection. Durability towards prolonged UV and outdoor exposure.

In the present work, two kinds of hybrid polymeric-inorganic coatings containing TiO2 or SiO2 particles and prepared starting from two commercial resins (Alpha®SI30 and Bluesil®BP9710) were developed and applied to two kinds of mortars (an air-hardening calcic lime mortar [ALM] and a natural hydraulic lime mortar [HLM]) to achieve better performances in terms of water repellence and consequently damage resistance. The two pure commercial resins were also applied for comparison purposes. Properties of the coated materials and their performance were studied using different techniques such as con

Mechanical and histological evaluations of hydroxyapatite-coated and noncoated Ti6Al4V implants in tibia bone.

This paper evaluates the behavior of hydroxyapatite (HAP) coated and noncoated Ti6Al4V implants in dog tibia after 3 and 5 months implantation. HPA-coated implants were obtained by plasma spraying. XRD, SEM, and EPMA were employed to estimate the coating characteristics and their behavior in vivo. Investigation of material characteristics showed that the as-received coatings consisted mainly of amorphism and HAP phase. Other phases such as TCP and CaO were identified due to thermal changes of HAP particles in plasma flame. SEM micrographs showed a typical microstructure of plasma-sprayed coati

Enhanced Tear Resistance and Biocompatibility of Polyurethane-Urea Elastomers for Artificial Heart Valves via Hydrogen Bonding Design.

Valvular heart disease imposes a heavy global clinical burden, and conventional mechanical and bioprosthetic valves struggle to achieve an optimal balance between long-term durability and in vivo biocompatibility. Siloxane polyurethane urea (SiPUU) serves as a commonly used polymer matrix for heart valve research owing to its intrinsic favorable cytocompatibility. Nevertheless, its insufficient tear resistance and inferior cyclic fatigue properties render it incompatible with the surgical suturing and forming procedures of prosthetic heart valves. To overcome the mechanical bottlenecks of exis

Investigating human IgE antibody interactions with pollen-derived sporopollenin biopolymers: immunoreactivity profiling for the rational design of structurally robust and biocompatible biomaterials.

Pollen grains are being explored as innovative biomaterials for different applications, ranging from oral drug delivery to encapsulation of food additives, with the production of pollen-based building blocks standing on its robust, chemically inert, and mechanically durable sporopollenin wall. Yet, concerns remain regarding the safety of sporopollenin microcapsules (SMCs) or derivatized sporopollenin materials purified from pollen grains, traditionally linked to allergies. Herein, we address the critical question of whether sporopollenin shells purified from bee pollen may cause allergic react

Photothermal-Therapy-Based Targeting Thrombolytic Therapy.

Thrombosis, a common underlying mechanism of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and venous thromboembolism, is the leading cause of death in patients. Owing to their lack of targeting ability, short half-life, low utilization rate, and high risk of bleeding side effects, the current first-line thrombolytic drugs are unable to meet the requirements for effective treatment of thrombi. Photothermal therapy (PTT) represents a promising thrombolytic modality due to its precise spatiotemporal selectivity and minimal invasiveness. However, the efficacy of PTT is constrained by the limited penetr

Effects of Additive Manufacturing and Sterilization on Poly(p-Dioxanone) for Short-Term Application in the Intestinal Environment.

Additive manufacturing of patient specific implants made of biodegradable polymers is receiving increasing attention in the medical sector, including the trend towards manufacturing at the point-of-care. Despite this, the changes of the polymer structure and their effects on mechanical properties and degradation behavior caused by the additive manufacturing process and subsequent sterilization are still insufficiently investigated, although of key relevance for the implant's functionality. In this study, poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) was processed by fused filament fabrication (FFF). The effects of

Development and Evaluation of an Injectable Acellular Dermal Matrix for Breast Reconstruction.

Breast reconstruction following oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OBCS) presents significant challenges, particularly in cases where conventional volume displacement techniques are insufficient. While autologous flaps offer an alternative, they are associated with donor site morbidity and surgical complexity. Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) has emerged as a promising volume replacement option, but its application in direct defect filling remains largely unexplored. This study introduced SC Fill paste, an injectable, microparticulate ADM developed through supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) d

Biosensor Innovations for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Diagnostics.

Renal failure, characterized by declining kidney function and impaired blood filtration, arises from diverse conditions and medications that induce acute or chronic damage to glomerular, tubular, or vascular structures. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) represent the two primary forms of renal disease, both associated with high morbidity, mortality, and clinical complexity. Current diagnostic criteria lack sufficient sensitivity and specificity, driving the search for biomarkers and rapid detection methods to enhance diagnostic precision. Electrochemical, plasmonic, na

Fabrication of thermo-sensitive hydrogels based on the Diels-Alder reaction and study on their in vivo biosafety.

The goal of this study is to develop a novel injectable hydrogel, referred to as PPMF, and evaluate its biosafety profile. The PPMF polymer, which serves as the gelation precursor, was synthesized through a redox radical polymerization and amidation process. The molecular structures of the synthesized polymers were thoroughly characterized using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The PPMF hydrogel was formed via Diels-Alder reactions between the PPMF polymer and four-arm polyethylene glycol maleimide (4-armed-PEG-Mal) cross-linkers. A com

Polypropylene Surgical Mesh Implants for Hernia and Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Materials Performance Perspective.

Surgical meshes are medical devices that were initially designed for hernia repair and later adopted for pelvic floor reconstructive surgeries, including pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Polypropylene (PP) is the most common material for surgical mesh, but others have been used clinically. Complications with PP surgical mesh have been attributed to several factors, including the post-implantation degradation of the surgical mesh materials. PP mesh was initially considered to be inert, but evidence of in vivo degradation has since been widely reported in retrie

Electrospun gelatin fiber-gelatin methacryloyl hydrogel composites for reproductive applications.

Each year, approximately 30 million Cesarean deliveries are performed globally, involving surgical incisions through the abdomen and uterus, followed by suturing of the uterus and skin after childbirth. The presence of prior uterine incisions disrupts native uterine tissue properties and increases the risk of complications in subsequent pregnancies. Thus, tissue repair scaffolds for this application must promote regeneration and restore the mechanical strength required to withstand the uterine loading. Despite the importance of mechanical considerations in regeneration, the fracture mechanics
