Oculomotor biofeedback therapy.

Biofeedback therapy refers to the process of gaining voluntary control over some bodily function by the immediate use of information regarding its physiological state. In this paper we review the use of oculomotor biofeedback therapy in three common ocular disorders: nystagmus, strabismus, and amblyopia. Experimental and clinical test results have been encouraging. We believe oculomotor biofeedback therapy should be attempted, either alone or in conjunction with orthoptic and/or surgical procedures, in these and other ocular disorders manifesting an abnormal oculomotor component.

Neurogenic faecal incontinence in children with spina bifida: rectosphincteric responses and evaluation of a physiological rationale for management, including biofeedback conditioning.

The rectosphincteric responses of 22 spina bifida (SB) children, aged 3.0 to 11.0 years, with frequent neurogenic faecal incontinence were investigated by clinical and anomanometric techniques and a bowel habilitation programme based on the physiological rationale of timed regular and complete evacuations, regulation of bowel habit and faecal consistency by diet and biofeedback conditioning of rectosphincteric responses. Eighteen patients had perianal anaesthesia, flail anus and absent anorectal reflex, but some degree of (reduced) rectal sensation. Four had reduced perianal sensation and norm

Oculomotor biofeedback therapy for exotropia.

Twelve exotropes of various types received oculomotor biofeedback therapy at State College of New York (SUNY) University Optometric Center. Feedback of a variable pitch tone which reflected changes in ocular vergence reinforced motor control of eye posture. Patients were trained to achieve and sustain alignment in a variety of viewing situations. The six intermittent exotropes in the study who did not have amblyopia or prior history of unsuccessful surgical or orthoptic therapy achieved the highest recovery rating after training. The amblyope and those who had orthoptic training learned to vol

EMG biofeedback training for a mentally retarded individual with cerebral palsy.

Electromyographic biofeedback training was used to facilitate finger and wrist extension movements in a mentally retarded individual with spastic hemiplegia. The client was a 29-year-old woman with profound mental retardation and cerebral palsy as a result of postnatal meningitis. During treatment, the client demonstrated a short attention span, lack of motivation, low frustration tolerance, and increased spasticity in her left hand. The client was able to hyperextend her fingers following finger extension training, although goniometric measurements showed a marked degree of wrist flexion and

Adapted physical activity, exergaming and relaxation by biofeedback in haematological intensive care unit in France: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial (APAER-H trial).

INTRODUCTION: Haematological malignancies and their treatments are known for their significant adverse effects on health-related quality of life (QoL). During high-dose cytotoxic therapy in haematological intensive care units (HICU), adapted physical activity (APA) is recognised for its role in maintaining physical fitness and limiting fatigue. Psychological and emotional states are also impaired, with anxiety levels significantly increasing in this specific context. Limited information is available about this topic. However, APA has been shown to reduce anxiety in various populations, includi

Interventions for giggle incontinence: A scoping review of therapeutic strategies and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Giggle incontinence (GI) is a rare type of urinary incontinence that affects children and adolescents, impacting their quality of life by causing social isolation, reduced self-confidence, and low self-esteem. To counteract the symptoms of GI, various treatment approaches have been described, but there is a dearth of reporting on their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to synthesize evidence on the management of GI in the adolescent population, focusing on pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. METHODS: Ascoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs

Non-Pharmacological Treatment of Primary Headaches-A Focused Review.

Headache disorders are a significant global health burden, leading to reduced quality of life. While vast pharmacological treatments are available, they may be associated with adverse effects or inadequate efficacy for some patients, therefore there is a need for exploring alternate treatment strategies. This review gives a brief explanation and evaluation of some established and emerging non-pharmacological approaches for headache management, focusing on nutraceuticals and diet, acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, relaxation techniques, autogenic training, and neurom

MAternal Mental Health in the WORKplace (MAMH@WORK): A Protocol for Promoting Perinatal Maternal Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Women are exposed to increased burden of mental disorders during the perinatal period: 13-19% experience postpartum depression. Perinatal psychological suffering affects early mother-child relationship, impacting child's emotional and cognitive development. Return-to-work brings additional vulnerability given the required balance between parenting and job demands. The MAternal Mental Health in the WORKplace (MAMH@WORK) project aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a brief and sustainable intervention, promoting (a) maternal mental health throughout pregnancy and first 12 months aft

Psychiatric aspects of pain in cancer patients.

The goal of this review is to discuss the psychiatric aspects of pain in cancer patients from a biopsychosocial approach. Pain in cancer patients is considered as a complex reaction causing severe suffering and involves many psychological aspects. It has many dimensions such as personality, affect, cognition and social relations. The pain experience may also be influenced by some psychological factors such as anxiety, depression and the meaning of pain. Therefore, a successful management of cancer pain requires a multidisciplinary approach. Since cancer pain is generally treated medically, the

Mind and body therapy for fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Mind-body interventions are based on the holistic principle that mind, body and behaviour are all interconnected. Mind-body interventions incorporate strategies that are thought to improve psychological and physical well-being, aim to allow patients to take an active role in their treatment, and promote people's ability to cope. Mind-body interventions are widely used by people with fibromyalgia to help manage their symptoms and improve well-being. Examples of mind-body therapies include psychological therapies, biofeedback, mindfulness, movement therapies and relaxation strategies

Resonance frequency versus fixed 0.1 Hz breathing in HRV biofeedback: a four-week randomized comparison.

Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) is increasingly examined as an adjunctive method for reducing psychological symptoms. Standard protocols involve identifying each participant's resonance frequency (RF); however, it remains unclear whether this individualized calibration offers advantages over training at a fixed breathing rate of 0.1 Hz. We conducted a randomized trial with three groups (RF, 0.1 Hz, Control) to compare the effectiveness of a four-week HRVB intervention using an individually determined RF versus a fixed breathing frequency of 0.1 Hz. Participants (N = 88) completed pre

Improvement in automatic postural coordination following alexander technique lessons in a person with low back pain.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The relationship between abnormal postural coordination and back pain is unclear. The Alexander Technique (AT) aims to improve postural coordination by using conscious processes to alter automatic postural coordination and ongoing muscular activity, and it has been reported to reduce low back pain. This case report describes the use of the AT with a client with low back pain and the observed changes in automatic postural responses and back pain. CASE DESCRIPTION: The client was a 49-year-old woman with a 25-year history of left-sided, idiopathic, lumbrosacral back pain
