Plant extracts as potential mosquito larvicides.

Mosquitoes act as a vector for most of the life threatening diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya ferver, filariasis, encephalitis, West Nile Virus infection, etc. Under the Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM), emphasis was given on the application of alternative strategies in mosquito control. The continuous application of synthetic insecticides causes development of resistance in vector species, biological magnification of toxic substances through the food chain and adverse effects on environmental quality and non target organisms including human health. Application

Effect of inflammatory bowel disease treatments on patients with diabetes mellitus.

As medical care progresses and the number of patients with chronic conditions increases there is the inevitable challenge of managing patients with multiple co-morbidities. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term for are inflammatory conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, the two most common forms being Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease. These diseases, usually diagnosed in young adults, exhibit a relapsing and remitting course and usually require long-term treatment. IBD can be treated with a number of topical and systemic treatments. We conducted a review of the c

Identification of Specific Virulence Factors of Pseudomonas Strains in the Biocontrol of the Potato Pest Tecia solanivora.

Tecia solanivora (The Guatemalan potato tuber moth) is a major potato pest, responsible for up to 20% of crop losses and a significant economic impact. Certain Pseudomonas exhibit insecticidal activity and produce virulence factors with cytotoxic and antimicrobial properties, positioning them as promising candidates for biological control. This study evaluated seven Pseudomonas strains with insecticidal activity and identified key virulence factors involved. The strains demonstrated varying degrees of insecticidal activity, with Pseudomonas protegens strains CHA0 and 59C being the most lethal,

Scorpion insect neurotoxin LqhIT2 is a promising oral biopesticide: high-level preparation in Pichia pastoris and bioactivity assays.

BACKGROUND: Discovering insecticidal proteins with high activity and strict insect specificity and applying them to the biological control of insect pests is of great significance. Oral LqhIT2 has insecticidal activity, which most other insecticidal neurotoxin proteins do not have, but the large-scale preparation of the toxin is difficult and one of the obstacles to determining its anti-insect potential for biological control. RESULTS: In this study, the expression level of recombinant LqhIT2 (rLqhIT2) in Pichia pastoris was as high as 1.4 g/L under high-cell-density fermentation conditions.

Effects of larval density and predation by Toxorhynchites amboinensis on Aedes polynesiensis (Diptera: Culicidae) developing in coconuts.

Organisms manipulated as biological control agents of disease vectors should tolerate ranges of developmental conditions exploited by their target species. Furthermore, they should reduce numbers of host-seeking vector adults without providing fitness benefits to larval survivors developing among fewer competitors. We studied electrochemistry in rat-chewed coconuts, an important developmental habitat used by Aedes polynesiensis, a vector of lymphatic filariasis. We also studied the effects of larval density and predation by the mosquito Toxorhynchites amboinensis as predators of Ae. polynesien…

Wegener's granulomatosis: is biologic therapy useful?

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a complex autoimmune disorder that has been transformed from a uniformly lethal process to a chronic disease with a relapsing-remitting course. In the setting of frequent relapses, the need to manage cumulative disease damage and drug toxicities has spurred the identification and development of new potent and directed therapies. Biologic agents, which offer the potential for remission-induction and drug-sparing approaches to treat WG, have been studied in several small, open-label clinical series and one large, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Biological control of a novel strain Bacillus velezensis BFWR11 against tomato early blight.

As a globally important vegetable crop, tomato suffers significant yield losses due to early blight, a fungal disease caused by Alternaria solani. This study investigated the antifungal activity and plant growth-promoting effects of a novel strain, Bacillus velezensis BFWR11. Genomic analysis identified gene clusters responsible for synthesizing metabolites, including lipopeptides and cell wall-degrading enzymes. Among these were clusters for ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs), a class known for their potent antibacterial properties. Additionally, some k
