Simulation study of the effects of interstitial fluid pressure and blood flow velocity on transvascular transport of nanoparticles in tumor microenvironment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although nanoparticle preparations have great potential in the treatment of tumors, nanoparticle preparations have … vessel wall pressure. Interestingly, the transport efficiency of nanoparticles first increased with blood flow velocity, and then decreased with blood flow velocity. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that with the continuous malignant development of tumors, the ability of nanoparticles to passively diffuse has almost disappeared. The enhanced permeability and retentio …

The effect of adding CO2 to hypoxic inspired gas on cerebral blood flow velocity and breathing during incremental exercise.

Hypoxia increases the ventilatory response to exercise, which leads to hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia and subsequent reduction in cerebral blood flow (CBF). We studied the effects of adding CO2 to a hypoxic inspired gas on CBF during heavy exercise in an altitude naïve population. We hypothesized that augmented inspired CO2 and hypoxia would exert synergistic effects on increasing CBF during exercise, which would improve exercise capacity compared to hypocapnic hypoxia. We also examined the responsiveness of CO2 and O2 chemoreception on the regulation ventilation ([Formula: see text]E) du

Blood flow velocities in the basal vein after subarachnoid haemorrhage. A prospective study using transcranial duplex sonography.

BACKGROUND: Early recognition of emerging delayed neurological deficits (DND) in patients after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is not always possible by transcranial Doppler sonography. Aim of this study was to investigate a) whether determination of blood flow velocities in deep cerebral basal veins can predict DND in these patients b) the correlation of venous flow velocity to cerebral blood flow (CBF). METHODS: a) We prospectively investigated the mean flow velocity in the basal vein (VBVR), in the middle cerebral artery (VMCA) and in the extracranial internal carotid artery (VICA) in 66 p

Effect of indomethacin on cerebral blood flow velocities in very low birth weight neonates with a patent ductus arteriosus.

The effect of repeated doses of indomethacin on mean peak velocity (MPV) and time-averaged mean velocity in the middle cerebral artery was assessed in 10 ventilated neonates with a patent ductus arteriosus using colour/duplex Doppler technique prior to, and 10, 30, and 120 min after the first and the third dose. Velocities were significantly reduced up to 120 min after the first dose. The third dose resulted in a significant reduction in MPV at 10 and 30 min following treatment. This reduction was half of that observed after the first dose. Systemic blood pressure (BP) and heart rate did not c

Do graduated compression stockings and pneumatic boots have an additive effect on the peak velocity of venous blood flow?

Graduated compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression boots reduce the incidence of deep vein thrombosis. Recent studies suggest that the simultaneous use of these devices may have a synergistic prophylactic effect; however, conflicting reports also exist. Using duplex imaging, we analyzed the effect on peak venous velocity in the superficial femoral vein produced by the individual and simultaneous use of graduated compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression boots. Normal volunteers and postoperative patients were examined. The use of intermittent pneumatic co

Alterations of intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow velocity in healthy neonates and their implication in the origin of perinatal brain damage.

Intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow velocity were recorded in term healthy neonates during the first 3 days of life using non-invasive methods (LADD-fontanometry and cw-Doppler sonography). Intracranial pressure increased from 4.0 +/- 2.7 cm H2O to 5.8 +/- 2.7 cm H2O and maximal cerebral blood flow velocity in the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) increased from 33 cm/s to 58 cm/s as calculated from a Doppler shift of 0.63 to 1.10 kHz and vascular resistance decreased between the 1st and 3rd day of life. These alterations could not be demonstrated in the femoral artery. This is in accor…

Cerebral blood flow velocities measured by transcranial doppler are associated with magnetic resonance imaging biomarkers in moyamoya arteriopathy.

PURPOSE: In individuals with moyamoya arteriopathy, transcranial Doppler (TCD) may be a useful complement to MRI because of its safety, cost effectiveness, and ability to be performed without anesthesia in children. We evaluated associations between various MR-based moyamoya biomarkers and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) as measured by TCD in individuals with moyamoya. METHODS: Participants ≤ 26-years-old with moyamoya who had not had surgical revascularization underwent TCDs within 14 days of surveillance brain MRIs. Associations between MRI parameters (Suzuki scores, cerebrovascular ste…

Impaired damping of cerebral blood flow velocity pulsatility is associated with the number of perivascular spaces as measured with 7T MRI.

Arterial walls stiffen with age, cardiovascular risk factors, and various vascular diseases, which may lead to less damping of the arterial blood flow pulse, subsequent microvascular damage, and enlarged perivascular spaces (PVS). However, the exact interplay between these processes is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relation between blood flow velocity pulsatility in the small lenticulostriate arteries and their supplying middle cerebral artery and the respective damping factor (DF), with the number of MRI-visible PVS in elderly subjects. Blood flow velocity waveforms were obtain…

Roll of stenosis severity, artery radius and blood fluid behavior on the flow velocity in the arteries: Application in biomedical engineering.

In this work, the Sisko model is involved for blood flow simulation in the arteries with triangular shapes of stenosis, which is different in severities of 20%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. Firstly, the effects of different severity of stenosis as much as 20%, 30%, and 40% are investigated in the velocity of blood while artery radius of 0.002 m and Sisko parameters of n = 0.639 and b = 0.1735 are constant. Then, stenosis with the severity of 40% remains, and the radius of the artery is varied from 0.002 m to 0.0035 m to investigate the effects of artery radius on the blood velocity. Finally, di

Assessment of blood flow velocities and venous pressures using a dual-sensor guidewire in symptomatic dural sinus stenoses.

Lateral venous sinus stenoses have been associated with idiopathic intracranial hypertension and venous pulsatile tinnitus. Venous pressure measurement is traditionally performed to assess the indications for stenting in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension. However, its reliability has recently been questioned by many authors. The dual-sensor guidewire was first developed for advanced physiological assessment of fractional and coronary flow reserves in coronary artery stenoses. It allows measurement of both venous pressure and blood flow velocities. The authors used this device
