BACKGROUND: Canine tick-borne parasites have emerged in recent years, showing a wider geographic distribution and increased global prevalence. In addition to their veterinary importance, domestic dogs play an important role in the transmission cycles of some agents by acting as reservoirs and sentinels. This study investigated Babesia, Theileria, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia species in asymptomatic dogs in ten provinces of Turkey.
METHODS: DNA obtained from blood samples collected from 757 domestic dogs (243 stray, 351 shelter, 163 pet) of both sexes and various ages were evaluated using PCR and

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) are caused by a diverse array of pathogens with varying biological behaviors that result in a wide spectrum of clinical presentations and laboratory abnormalities. For many reasons, the diagnosis of canine vector-borne infectious diseases can be challenging for clinicians. The aim of the present study was to compare CVBD serological and molecular testing as the two most common methodologies used for screening healthy dogs or diagnosing sick dogs in which a vector-borne disease is suspected.
METHODS: We used serological (Anaplasma species, Babesi

Tick-borne zoonoses are emerging globally due to changes in climate and land use. While the zoonotic threats associated with ticks are well studied elsewhere, in Australia, the diversity of potentially zoonotic agents carried by ticks and their significance to human and animal health is not sufficiently understood. To this end, we used untargeted metatranscriptomics to audit the prokaryotic, eukaryotic and viral biomes of questing ticks and wildlife blood samples from two urban and rural sites in New South Wales, Australia. Ixodes holocyclus and Haemaphysalis bancrofti were the main tick speci

The surgical nature of dental practice, which frequently includes a combination of using sharp tools and the presence of blood, puts dental practitioners at a significant risk for infection with bloodborne pathogens, mainly hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. Several seroprevalence studies and case reports traced back newly diagnosed cases of hepatitis B and C to recent episodes of dental treatments. This paper provides an update on the prevalence of hepatitis B and C and HIV, the likelihood of acquiring an infection following an occupational injury, the manner in which serologic tests should b

The onset of the HIV pandemic led both to significant alterations in blood collection and screening practice and to the development of more sophisticated methods of inactivation of infectious agents from the blood supply. Photodynamic (i.e. light activated) pathogen inactivation is one such method currently in limited use in various European states. The approach is based on the generation of a burst of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, resulting in the activation of several cell death mechanisms. However, its application to tropical pathogens is perhaps less appreciated, despite the fact t

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) was first described as a clinical entity in the 1920s, first transmitted experimentally in 1968, and first transmitted iatrogenically in 1972 (corneal transplant). Numerous experimental studies in rodents, sheep and primates have since revealed very low levels of infectivity in blood (about 1/100 000th the level in brain tissue) that can appear as early as half-way through the incubation period, with 5-10 fold higher concentrations in leucocytes than plasma. Transfused blood from individuals incubating the variant form of CJD has transmitted infection to four re

The calculated residual infectious risk of HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) from blood transfusion is extremely low. However, the risk of bacterial contamination remains and a variety of other agents including emerging viruses, protozoa and tick-borne agents threaten blood supplies and undermine public confidence in blood safety. Traditional methods of donor screening and testing have limited ability to further reduce disease transmission and cannot prevent an emerging infectious agent from entering the blood supply. Pathogen inactivation technologies have all but elimi

Based on the results of seven ICTH-controlled PUP studies only the virus-inactivating procedures by pasteurization (60 degrees C for 10 h), tri-n-butyl-phosphate/detergent treatment, and vapor heating (60 degrees C for 10 h and 1,200 mbar) have prevented the haemophilic patients from infections with hepatitis B, C and HIV. After the disaster of the HIV infection in haemophilic patients at the beginning of the 80's the factor concentrates given today seem to be safe for virus infections during substitution therapy. To prove this high therapeutical standard there is a need for a prospective long

Previous serological surveys have reported the presence of different organisms in cats from Spain but little reports exist about the exact identity of these organisms. The purpose of the study reported here was to assess the presence of DNA of several vector-borne infections in a population of cats from Barcelona area. One hundred blood samples obtained from cats admitted to the UAB-VTH were entered into the study and classified as healthy (n=48) or unhealthy (n=52). EDTA-blood samples were assayed for Leishmania infantum, Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., Hepat

Both tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus and Borrelia burgdorferi depend for their survival on a tick-borne transmission cycle involving diverse vertebrate hosts and ixodid (primarily Ixodes) tick species. Increasing evidence strongly suggests that a key factor in successful transmission is the ability of these pathogens to exploit the pharmacological properties of their vector tick's saliva. Proteins and other chemicals, secreted in tick saliva, control the vertebrate hosts' haemostatic, inflammatory and immune responses in order to facilitate blood-feeding. Such bioactive saliva molecules in

Dogs are among the most widespread and beloved domestic animals worldwide. As close companions of humans, they are commonly exposed to the environment and to various vectors, making them potential reservoirs for a wide range of vector-borne pathogens. This study was aimed to determine the molecular prevalence and genetic diversity of Anaplasma (A.) ovis, Toxoplasma (T.) gondii and Theileria (T.) ovis among domestic dogs in Pakistan. A total of 275 canine blood samples were collected from five districts in Punjab, Dera Ghazi Khan (n = 57), Vehari (n = 7), Layyah (n = 34), Bahawalpur (n = 38) an

Pet animals (dogs and cats) can be infected with several companion vector-borne pathogens (CVBPs). Morbidity and mortality have been reported in pet animals due to CVBP infections. Pet animals living in close proximity to humans are able to transmit zoonotic pathogens. This study used molecular techniques to investigate the prevalence of CVBPs in apparently healthy pet animals (dogs and cats) from Khukhot City Municipality, Pathum Thani province, Thailand. In total, 210 blood samples were randomly collected from 95 dogs and 115 cats for the detection of seven companion vector-borne pathogens (

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are serious constraints to livestock production in Tanzania and other tropical and subtropical countries and impact the livelihoods of resource-poor farming communities in the region. In Tanzania, detailed studies on tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in cattle using sensitive molecular detection methods are scarce. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence and species composition of bovine TBPs in cattle kept in Zanzibar Island. A total of 236 blood samples were randomly collected in cattle population in June and July 2019. We used polymerase chain reac

Over the last 15 years, there has been a trend in the United States towards the increasing use of apheresis platelet (AP) concentrates over whole-blood-derived platelets (WBP). Although 1-h- and 24-h-corrected count increments tend to be higher with AP, this does not translate into improved haemostatic efficiency when used to prevent bleeding in haematology/oncology patients. WBP expose the recipient to more donors than apheresis products. However, recent studies have shown no significant differences in the rates of bacterial contamination, human leukocyte antigen alloimmunisation, RhD alloimm

Ticks transmit a variety of pathogens to their hosts by feeding on blood. The interactions and struggle between tick pathogens and hosts have evolved bilaterally. The components of tick saliva can directly or indirectly trigger host biological responses in a manner that promotes pathogen transmission; however, host cells continuously develop strategies to combat pathogen infection and transmission. Moreover, it is still unknown how host cells develop their defense strategies against tick-borne viruses during tick sucking. Here, we found that the tick saliva peptide HIDfsin2 enhanced the antivi

The spleen is a central immune organ that surveys blood-borne pathogens and coordinates systemic immune responses. Within this organ, conventional dendritic cell (cDC) subsets occupy blood-exposed niches that enable efficient antigen capture and rapid initiation of T cell activation. While splenic cDC1s maintain relatively stable localization and functional programs, cDC2s represent a highly heterogeneous population whose positioning, retention, and survival are actively shaped by local microenvironmental cues. During systemic infection, extensive cross-talk between cDC subsets and other immun

Arthropod-borne pathogens cause some of the most important human and animal infectious diseases. Many vectors acquire or transmit pathogens through the process of blood feeding. Here, we report adiponectin, the most abundant adipocyte-derived hormone circulating in human blood, directly or indirectly inhibits acquisition of the Lyme disease agent, Borrelia burgdorferi, by Ixodes scapularis ticks. Rather than altering tick feeding or spirochete viability, adiponectin or its associated factors induces host histamine release when the tick feeds, which leads to vascular leakage, infiltration of ne
