Adolescence, Adulthood and Self-Perceived Halitosis: A Role of Psychological Factors.

(1) Background: Halitosis is a frequent condition that affects a large part of the population. It is considered a "social stigma", as it can determine a number of psychological and relationship consequences that affect people's lives. The purpose of this review is to examine the role of psychological factors in the condition of self-perceived halitosis in adolescent subjects and adulthood. (2) Type of studies reviewed: We conducted, by the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, systematic research of the literature on PubMed and Scholar. The key

A Customizable Multimodality Imaging Compound That Relates External Landmarks to Internal Structures.

UNLABELLED: Numerous research and clinical interventions, such as targeting drug deliveries or surgeries and finding blood clots, abscesses, or lesions, require accurate localization of various body parts. Individual differences in anatomy make it hard to use typical stereotactic procedures that rely on external landmarks and standardized atlases. For instance, it is not unusual to incorrectly place a craniotomy in brain surgery. This project was thus performed to find a new and easy method to correctly establish the relationship between external landmarks and medical scans of internal organs,

PHR1 is a vesicle-bound protein abundantly expressed in mature olfactory neurons.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To characterize the role of Phr1, a gene highly expressed in primary sensory neurons where it encodes an integral membrane protein with an N-terminal pleckstrin homology domain and a C-terminal transmembrane domain, in the olfactory system. METHODS: We studied the immunelocalization of the PHR1 protein in mouse olfactory epithelium both at steady state and during regeneration following methyl bromide (MeBr) exposure using scanning confocal microscopy. Additionally, we examined the electrophysiologic role of Phr1 in olfaction and short-term olfactory adaptation. RESULTS

Resection of panniculus morbidus: a salvage procedure with a steep learning curve.

BACKGROUND: A subset of obese people develop a pannus hanging to the floor. This panniculus morbidus prevents weight loss, as the patient cannot exercise. It prevents hygiene, leading to a profound odor and ultimately results in intertrigo, cellulitis, and/or abdominal ulceration. The only two options are to live/die with it or resect it. Some of these people are otherwise ready for a weight loss program. For this group, resection of the panniculus morbidus may be indicated. The authors reviewed the literature and found the condition has not been addressed in this Journal since 1994 and was no

[CNS disorders caused by metabolic disorders].

A guideline for early diagnosis of metabolic disorders affecting central nervous system during neonatal and early infancy was presented. Clinical manifestations associated with inborn errors of metabolism in the neonatal period are poor feeding, vomiting, diarrhea, abnormalities in muscle tonus, dyspnea, convulsion, coma and so on, and these are not specific to each disorder. However, such symptoms or signs as described below have often intimate relation to metabolic disorders: (1) previous children died of undetermined causes during early infancy; (2) complication of sepsis; (3) onset in the

A world without the olfactory dimension.

This article aims to describe what is it like to perceive reality when suffering from congenital anosmia. Nevertheless, this objective entails a fundamental difficulty. Since I have never had the experience of olfaction, it seems natural to me to live in a world lacking the olfactory dimension; this subjective perception is the only one I know and in consequence it is difficult to describe. For this reason, in recent years I have begun to develop long conversations with other people suffering from congenital anosmia, people who have lost their sense of olfaction in adulthood and also people wi

Visual cues attract adult Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera: Tungidae).

Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) is an ectoparasitic flea whose adult females cause tungiasis by embedding into the host's skin. Environmental, social and financial challenges in tungiasis endemic areas have left this disease neglected and lacking locally available control measures. One possible approach for controlling T. penetrans targets its off-host stages; however, surveillance tools for adult fleas are still lacking. Moreover, host-seeking cues and behaviour of adult T. penetrans remain largely unknown. In this study, we show that visual cues are attractive to ad

Perinatal responsiveness to alcohol's chemosensory cues as a function of prenatal alcohol administration during gestational days 17-20 in the rat.

Rat fetuses proximal to birth process alcohol-derived cues when the drug is directly delivered into the amniotic fluid. Prior evidence indicates that chemosensory sensation is detected during gestational Day 17 (GD17). In the present study Wistar-derived pregnant females received 0, 1, or 2 g/kg/day of alcohol (intragastric intubation) during GDs 17-20. Prenatal treatment failed to affect different maternal-fetal and perinatal physical parameters, e.g., placenta weight, umbilical cord length, offspring's body weights, weights and/or size of the olfactory bulbs, cerebral hemispheres, and cerebe

Sexual desire after olfactory loss: Quantitative and qualitative reports of patients with smell disorders.

Olfaction moderates human sexual experiences and smell disorder patients sometimes spontaneously complain about impairments in their sexual … function. Qualitative reports revealed for instance that the lack of attraction due to the other's body odor impedes partnership intimacy. The change of sexual desire was significantly related to depression and severity of olfactory impairment but not to partnership attachment. However, in the standardized questionnaire about sexual desire we observed no d …

A Prospective Study of Axillary Hair Reduction in Patients Treated With Microwave Technology.

BACKGROUND: Removing unwanted body hair is a growing trend in society today, and there are many laser-based devices for hair reduction. There are some limitations to those methods, including the lack of efficacy for lighter color hair. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to quantify hair reduction in the axillae after treatment with a noninvasive microwave energy device. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, multicenter study was performed at 3 private dermatology clinics. Fifty-six adult subjects seeking axillary hair reduction were enrolled and treated with the device in 1 or 2 treatment sessions

Frontal lobe dysfunction is associated with reduced DAT-SPECT accumulation in Lewy body disease.

INTRODUCTION: Lewy body disease (LBD) causes olfactory or cognitive dysfunction even before motor symptoms emerge. Recent reports indicate that the dopamine transporter (DAT), which can be imaged using single-photon emission computed tomography (123I-ioflupane SPECT), is related to olfactory and cognitive dysfunction in LBD patients. We suspected that decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the frontal lobe might be involved in these relationships. If so, then the results of these examinations may be useful in assessing the pathological progression of Lewy bodies. METHODS: We retrospectively a

Role of olfactory receptor78 in carotid body-dependent sympathetic activation and hypertension in murine models of chronic intermittent hypoxia.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is a hallmark manifestation of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a widespread breathing disorder. CIH-treated rodents exhibit activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypertension. Heightened carotid body (CB) activity has been implicated in CIH-induced hypertension. CB expresses high abundance of olfactory receptor (Olfr) 78, a G-protein coupled receptor. Olfr 78 null mice exhibit impaired CB sensory nerve response to acute hypoxia. Present study examined whether Olfr78 participates in CB-dependent activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypert

Chemoresponsiveness and breath physiology in anosmia.

Anosmia is a model to study the interaction among chemoreception systems. In the head injury, the traumatic irreversible anosmia caused by damage to olfactory nerve fibers and brain regions is of enviable research interest. In this study, psychophysiological tests for a comprehensive assessment of olfactory function were utilized to investigate anosmia, together with a new technique based on the breath real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We applied the breath and VOCs analysis to investigate chemoresponsiveness in the long-term irreversible post-traumatic anosmia.
