PURPOSE: To describe a case of a wooden foreign body in the upper eyelid that remained asymptomatic for 6 months.
CASE REPORT: A 9-year-old boy was presented with moderate upper lid swelling. Medical history was positive for trauma with a wooden stick 6 months ago. At first, the condition resolved under local antibiotic treatment. Three weeks later, the inflammation recurred and a corneal ulcer developed. Examination under general anesthesia revealed a wooden foreign body which had remained in the upper eyelid since the first injury.

From 1989-1993 we performed rigid bronchoscopies in 86 children in whom foreign body aspirations were suspected. In 72 cases, foreign bodies were identified in the tracheobronchial tree. In the remaining 14, no foreign body was found. Boys outnumbered girls. The most common type of foreign body was a peanut. The predilection of the foreign body was to fall into the right main bronchus. If the history indicated foreign body aspiration, a chest x-ray was not found to be necessary except for forensic interest.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Insulin resistance (IR) and central obesity are key contributors. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a simple surrogate for IR, while novel adiposity indices, such as the visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), cardiometabolic index (CMI), body roundness index (BRI), and a body shape index (ABSI), better reflect body fat distribution. However, the predictive value of combining TyG with these indices for CVD risk remains unclear.

Carotid body tumors are rather uncommon. Even though there is a great amount of literature on the subject, the controversy regarding its biological behavior and therapeutics and mainly, the surgical management still remains. We present eight patients with carotid body tumors (total of 9 tumors, one bilateral) surgically treated at the Neurosurgery Department of Santa Casa in Belo Horizonte, from 1989 to 1999.
