Effects of tegmental lesions on lordosis and body weight in female hamsters.

Lordosis responses in naturally-estrous hamsters were elicited by unilateral manual stimulation. Response latencies were compared before and … responses in ovariectomized, hormone-primed hamsters. These lesions caused significant increases in body weight, but again failed to show direct effects on lordosis. This result helps to delimit a ventral tegmental system previously implicated in the control of lordosis maintenance in hamsters. In addition, it suggests species differences in the brain circuit …

Effects of initial body weight on anorexia and tolerance to fenfluramine in rats.

The initial anorexia and development of tolerance to dl-fenfluramine was examined in rats with graded pretreatment body weight losses. Fenfluramine strongly attenuated food intake on the first test day in all weight groups and the magnitude of the initial anorexia did not differ between groups. The time course of anorectic tolerance was also similar in each of the groups. The results do not support a strict "set point" hypothesis according to which the tolerance to fenfluramine anorexia is an artifact of decreasing body weight and/or concurrently increasing relative food deprivation.

Loss of body weight and fat during exercise in a cold chamber.

Ten men spent one week in a cold climatic facility performing a simulated arctic military exercise demanding an energy expenditure of 13-16 MJ-day-1. Although the ration pack was adequate, extensive plate wastage led to a negative energy balance of 2.2 MJ-day-1. Fluid intake was also insufficient, with a 3.25% decrease of body weight, and a 9.7% decrease in skin thickness over the cold exposure. Extensive fat mobilization was indicated by a decrease of skinfold thicknesses, an increase of body density, and associated ketonuria and glycosuria. The fat breakdown far exceeded the calculated energ…

RESULTS: Snord116del mice born and maintained at TN exhibited lower body weight curves, lower percentage fat mass, and lower food intake than WT mice at RT. In 4- to 6-month-old high-fat diet-fed female mice, TN raised the Snord116del body weight curve closer to that of RT-housed WT mice although the TN-housed Snord116del mice …

Prospective assessment of body weight and body composition changes in patients with psoriasis receiving anti-TNF-α treatment.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is a pro-inflammatory cytokine associated with psoriasis pathogenesis. Anti-TNF-α therapies are effective in p … ere significantly decreased. Seventy-five percent of PsO and 60% of PsA patients had an increase in body weight. Weight changes correlated with fat mass gain in the PsO group, and with fat and lean mass gain in the PsA group. In the present study, we demonstrated that a blockage of TNF-α bioactivity is related with fat and lean mass gain in both PsO and PsA s …

Associations among patterns in daily body weight, body condition scoring, and reproductive performance in high-producing dairy cows.

The objective was to investigate the associations between body condition scores (BCS) and daily body weight (BW) in the first 150 d of lactation (DIM) and reproductive performance in high-producing dairy cows. Data included automated daily BW measurements and BCS of 2,020 Israeli Holstein cows from 7 commercial farms. Individual BW series were smoothed using penalized cubic splines, and variables representing BW patterns were generated. The presence of 7- and 21-d cycles in BW was determined using time-series analysis. Associations between BW and BCS and conception at first artificial insemina…

Influence of sibutramine, orlistat and Ispaghula in reducing body weight and total body fat content in obese individuals.

BACKGROUND: The correlations between combined body fat parameters and risk factors of obesity explained a portion of the variation in the weight, BMI and waist circumference, the average number of categorical metabolic risk factors increases progressively with increasing total body fat content. There is currently no data available in which influence of drugs can be assessed on total body fat content. This was a non-randomized, prospective, open-label, parallel group study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of sibutramine, orlistat and ispahgula in reducing body weight and percentage of…

Relationship of body-image distortion to sex-role identifications, irrational cognitions, and body weight in eating-disordered females.

Thirty-one eating-disordered (ED) women and 11 normal women completed tests of sex-role identity, dysfunctional cognitions, and body image. Anorexics, not bulimics, exhibited body-image distortion. All EDs (distorters and nondistorters) showed "hyperfeminine" identifications. Maladaptive cognitions were present in all EDs, but more marked in "overestimators." Body weight predicted BID better than other measures of eating pathology, which suggests important effects of weight per se in producing BID.

Effect of relative weight limit set as a body weight percentage on work-related low back pain among workers.

INTRODUCTION: A quarter of work-related low back pain (LBP) cases result from handling heavy loads in Japan. The maximum weight male/female workers can handle is 40%/24% of their body weight but has set a constant load weight in ISO 11228-1 and NIOSH lifting equation. The preventive effect of the relative weight limit on LBP has not been clarified. This study aimed to identify the effect of relative weight limits set as body weight percentages on LBP prevalence. METHODS: Data from 21924 workers were collected via a web-based survey in 2022. The workers were categorized into three groups: grou…

Pregestational body mass index, trimester-specific weight gain and total gestational weight gain: how do they influence perinatal outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between pre-gestational body mass index (BMI), total gestational weight gain (GWG), and/or trimester-specific weight gain (GWGT) with adverse maternal or perinatal outcomes (AMPOs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maternal clinical characteristics and pregnancy and perinatal outcomes were used to predict AMPOs. The predictive ability of BMI, GWG, or GWGT for AMPOs was analyzed using the area under the curve (AUC). Logistic regression models in a univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to estimate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (C

Post-discharge body weight and neurodevelopmental outcomes among very low birth weight infants in Taiwan: A nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Premature infants are at high risk for developmental delay and cognitive dysfunction. Besides medical conditions, growth restriction is regarded as an important risk factor for cognitive and neurodevelopmental dysfunction throughout childhood and adolescence and even into adulthood. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between post-discharge body weight and psychomotor development using a nationwide dataset. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a nationwide cohort study conducted in Taiwan. Total of 1791 premature infants born between 2007 and 2011 with a birth weight of less th…

Gut permeability is related to body weight, fatty liver disease, and insulin resistance in obese individuals undergoing weight reduction.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and associated metabolic disorders are related to impairments of the intestinal barrier. OBJECTIVE: We examined lactulose:mannitol (Lac:Man) permeability in obese individuals with and without liver steatosis undergoing a weight-reduction program to test whether an effective weight-loss program improves gut barrier function and whether obese patients with or without liver steatosis differ in this function. DESIGN: Twenty-seven adult, nondiabetic individuals [mean ± SD body mass index (BMI; in kg/m2): 43.7 ± 5.2; 78% with moderate or severe liver steatosis] were included in

Experimental micropolycystic ovarian disease. I. Measurement of body weight, ovarian weight and histochemical activity of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.

The effects of administration of 1.25 mg testosterone propionate between the 2nd and 5th day of life on body weight, ovarian weight, food and water consumption, and the histochemical activity of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17 beta-HSD) were studied in female Wistar rats during the evolution of experimental micropolycystic ovaries. Biometric studies showed a 9.9 day delay of vaginal opening for the treated animals and that the increased body weight of the animals during the disease was not related to food intake and thus presumably due to the induced metabolic disorder. Reduced histoc…

Associations between prepregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain and weight catch-up in small-for-gestational-age children.

Inadequate gestational weight gain (GWG) was related with a higher incidence of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births than appropriate GWG; however, the long-term association of maternal GWG with weight catch-up growth in SGA children remains unknown. The objective of this study is to evaluate the associations between prepregnancy body mass index (pBMI), GWG and weight catch-up patterns in SGA children. Data were from the Collaborative Perinatal Project, an American multicentre prospective cohort study. A total of 56,990 gravidas were recruited at the first prenatal visit, and children were f

Weight gain in early years and subsequent body mass index trajectories across birth weight groups: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid weight gain (RWG) in early-life is associated with increased risk of childhood obesity and is common among low-birth weight infants. Few studies have compared body mass index (BMI) trajectories of children experienced RWG to those who did not, across birth weight groups. We investigated the association between RWG in early-life and subsequent BMI trajectory and whether the association differs by birth weight. METHODS: We included term singletons from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (n = 10 637). RWG was defined as an increase in weight z-scores (derived using UK-WHO growth re
