Evidence linking body fatness to breast cancer (BC) prognosis is limited. While it seems that excess adiposity is associated with poorer BC survival, there is uncertainty over whether weight changes reduce mortality. This study aimed to assess the association between body fatness and weight changes pre- and postdiagnosis and overall mortality and BC-specific mortality among BC survivors. Our study included 13,624 BC survivors from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, with a mean follow-up of 8.6 years after diagnosis. Anthropometric data were obtained

The prevalence of obesity is rising around the world, as the number of subjects dieting and experiencing weight loss followed by unintentional weight regain, the so-called weight cycling (WC). In this narrative review we sought to reveal the effects of WC on body composition as well as to evaluate if WC may represent a risk factor for sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. The relative changes in lean and fat compartments after WC have been shown to depend on several factors as the degree of energy deficit, the rate of weight loss and baseline body weight, as well as sex, age, physical activity an

This study examined the effect of a 12-week non-instrumental resistance training program using body weight as a load (RT-BW) on body composition, fat distribution and metabolic profiles in elderly males and females. Healthy, non-diabetic, elderly volunteers (22 males and 30 females) aged 65-82 years were non-randomly divided into RT-BW (12 males and 20 females) and control (10 males and 10 females) groups. The RT-BW subjects were trained three times per week for 12 weeks according to a specified protocol involving a combination of upper and lower body weight and rubber tubing exercises. We eva

: The preservation of muscle mass and muscle function after weight loss therapy is currently a considerable challenge in the fight against obesity. Muscle mass secretes proteins called myokines that have relevant functions in the regulation of metabolism and health. This study was aimed to evaluate whether a very low-calorie ketogenic (VLCK) diet may modulate myokine levels, in addition to changes in body composition, compared to a standard, balanced low-calorie (LC) diet or bariatric surgery in patients with obesity. Body composition, ketosis, insulin sensitivity and myokines were evaluated i

BACKGROUND: Oral corticosteroids (OCS) are an efficacious treatment for asthma exacerbations, yet risk of adverse effects may decrease patient adherence to therapy. In particular, changes in appetite and dietary intake, which lead to weight gain and changes in body composition, are considered undesirable.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether 10-day OCS therapy in adults with asthma causes changes in leptin, appetite, dietary intake, body weight and body composition.
METHODS: Double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized cross-over trial of 10 days prednisolone (50 mg) in adults with stable asthma

OBJECTIVE: Thyrotoxicosis causes excess energy expenditure, resulting in weight loss, despite increased appetite, and changes in body composition, which are typically reversible with the normalization of thyroid hormone levels. However, patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease are sometimes hesitant to undergo treatment because of the perceived morbidity associated with weight gain. Therefore, obtaining data to explain the details of such weight gain to these patients is important. This study aimed to investigate changes in body weight and composition in patients with Graves' disea

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in individuals with obesity, largely due to increased soft tissue causing upper airway narrowing. However, mechanisms of OSA improvement following weight loss are incompletely understood, particularly in Asian population, where craniofacial and soft tissue characteristics differ. This study aimed to evaluate changes in upper airway anatomy before and six months after bariatric surgery. Methods: We prospectively evaluated Indian obese patients with OSA undergoing bariatric surgery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and polysomnography were perf

BACKGROUND: Greater adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) has been associated with improved inflammatory biomarkers in Western populations, suggesting that the anti-inflammatory effect is crucial for improvements in body weight, body composition, and cardiometabolic risk factors observed with the MedDiet. We previously reported that a calorie-restricted MedDiet adapted to the Asian food culture has beneficial effects on body composition, liver fat, and cardiometabolic risk markers in Chinese women with fatty liver disease.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of MedDiet on inflammation

PURPOSE: To investigate the prognostic impact of body size changes during the first postoperative year in breast cancer.
METHODS: A cohort of 1,317 primary breast cancer patients included in Sweden (2002-2014) underwent body size measurements at the preoperative and 1-year visits (n = 1,178). Landmark survival analyses were used to investigate how postoperative weight gain or loss (> 5%) or change in waist-hip ratio (WHR) categories (≤ 0.85 or > 0.85) impact prognosis.
RESULTS: Median age at inclusion was 61 years and body mass index 25.1 kg/m2. After a median follow-up of 5.0 years from inc

AIMS: To examine whether acute changes in patient hydration can change atrial contribution (AC) to circulatory function.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Atrial contribution was quantified by beat-to-beat changes in the amplitude of pulse oximetry signal in 24 paced outpatients. Changes in body weight were used for assessment of changes in total body water. The first measurement was performed at steady state. The second measurement was made after infusion of saline (5 mL/kg) and the third measurement was obtained 2 h after a bolus of furosemide (1 mg/kg). Changes found after furosemide administration (co

We tested whether personality disturbance and stressful life events can help explain why some patients with Anorexia nervosa or Bulimia nervosa remain ill for several years. In a follow-up of 37 patients, both factors were found to be significantly associated with a poorer outcome after a year, and preliminary data suggest this trend continues after two years. Further follow-up is necessary, but the data so far suggests that treatment goals and methods must be tailored to widely dissimilar needs. They also imply that therapeutic efforts to help patients cope with stressful events may be reward

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether obese children and adolescents have a disturbed body representation as compared to normal-weight participants matched for age and gender and whether their body representation changes in the course of an inpatient weight-reduction program.
METHODS: Sixty obese (OBE) and 27 normal-weight (NW) children and adolescents (age: 9-17) were assessed for body representation using a multi-method approach. Therefore, we assessed body size estimation, tactile size estimation, heartbeat detection accuracy, and attitudes towards one's own body. OBE

PURPOSE: Anti-obesity medications (AOMs), along with lifestyle interventions, are effective means of inducing and maintaining weight loss in patients with obesity. Although the efficacy of AOMs has been reported, there have been no direct comparisons of these drugs. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to compare the efficacy of all the AOMs available in Korea in a real-world setting.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The body weight and composition of 205 adults treated with phentermine, phentermine/topiramate, liraglutide, naltrexone/bupropion, lorcaserin, or orlistat for at least 6 months were an
