BACKGROUND: Weight regain following gastric bypass (GB) surgery continues to plague many individuals across the United States. However, understanding long-term eating and exercise behaviors to promote and sustain a lower weight following GB surgery is limited.
METHOD: The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and attitudes of eating and exercise behaviors associated with weight maintenance in post-GB patients (n=24) 2 or more years postsurgery. Demographic, anthropometric, and food record data were collected. Focus groups and personal interviews were used to understand behavior

Excess body fatness has been associated with various health outcomes including premature mortality, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and various types of cancer. Recent expert panels have reviewed the scientific evidence relating excess body fatness with risk of specific cancer types. This evidence includes intervention trials, cohort and case-control studies, experimental animal studies, and mechanistic studies. To date, these consensus panels have concluded that 13 cancers have sufficient evidence and biologic plausibility linking excess body fatness as a cause of cancer of the esoph

Homeotherms maintain a steady body temperature through thermoregulation, a process critical for survival during fasting, in which the brain has to defend energy-costly body temperature while reducing energy expenditure to conserve energy reserve; however, the neural basis for defending body temperature remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AgRP neuron lesion led to lethality during time-restricted feeding on chow but not on HFD, and caused no obvious impact on HFD-induced obesity or obesity-reducing responses to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonism. The lesion disrupted adaptive feed

A cross-sectional study of anthropometric parameters (weight and height) and body mass index (BMI) of 212 type 2 diabetic patients was conducted in Ibadan, Oyo State, South-Western Nigeria between January and March 2002. Pretested Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to obtain information on the socio-economic and medical profiles of the patients who had been attending the dietetic clinics of a teaching hospital and a state hospital respectively for medical treatment and dietary counseling for at least 6 months. The mean (SD) age of the patients was 55 (13.7) years. Fifty-seven pe

A 70-year-old man presented with anorexia and cough, and CT showed an infiltrative shadow in the right upper lobe. Bronchoscopy revealed unresectable advanced lung carcinoma(cT4N2M1a, cStage ⅣA). The patient had chronic renal failure due to type 2 diabetes mellitus and had been undergoing hemodialysis for 6 years. Four courses of primary chemotherapy( atezolizumab+carboplatin[CBDCA]+nab-paclitaxel[nab-PTX][atezolizumab 1,200 mg/body weight, CBDCA target AUC=5, nab-PTX 100 mg/m2 every 3 weeks])were administered. Thereafter, 3 courses of maintenance treatment with atezolizumab alone(1,200 mg/bod

We aimed to clarify the state of thyroid function in female high school long-distance runners. We evaluated the associations between thyroid function and menstrual condition, bone mineral density (BMD), nutritious status, and body composition. The subjects' height and weight were measured, along with fat percentage, fat mass, muscle mass, and BMD with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. A nutrition and dietary survey measured the subjects' intake of energy and nutrients based on meals provided at the subjects' dorm for 3 days in July of 2016 and 2017. Blood parameters including thyroid hormone a

To some extent body composition reflects nutritional status. It is also influenced by age, sex, race, physical activity and disease. The method used to measure body composition depends on the variable to be quantified. It may also depend on the practical conditions of the study. Detailed methods, such as densitometry, isotope dilution and electrical impedance give more accurate information, but they are commonly based on hypotheses established in adults. Anthropometric measurements can be used directly or as ratio or regression equations. At adolescence, the weight/height or body mass index (B

Extensive experimental and clinical studies in animals and humans during the past 25 years have yielded considerable data regarding the availability of internal magnesium (Mg) stores for the maintenance of extracellular and critical tissue concentrations of Mg during periods of Mg deprivation. The bulk of body Mg is present in bone and skeletal muscle, and it is these two sites that provide essentially all the available Mg. In the rat, approximately 15% of bone Mg (equivalent to 1.5 mmol/kg body weight) can be lost, whereas less than one tenth of that amount is available from skeletal muscle.

BACKGROUND: Gaining more weight during pregnancy than is recommended by the Institute of Medicine is prevalent and contributes to the development of obesity in women. This article describes the development and use of e-Moms of Rochester (e-Moms Roc), an electronic intervention (e-intervention), to address this health issue in a socioeconomically diverse sample of pregnant women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Formative research in the form of intercept interviews, in-depth interviews, and focus groups was conducted to inform the design of the e-intervention. The Web site continuously tracked each par

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global public health problem. Lifestyle modifications aimed at promoting weight loss and weight maintenance remain the current first-line treatments for NAFLD.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify barriers and enabling factors in weight management among patients with NAFLD using the capability, opportunity, motivation, behaviour (COM-B) model of behaviour.
DESIGN: This study adopted a qualitative design using semistructured interviews analysed with content analysis and the COM-B framework.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Interviews were conducted

BACKGROUND: The capacity of an individual to respond to changes in food intake so that postprandial metabolic perturbations are resolved, and metabolism returns to its pre-prandial state, is called phenotypic flexibility. This ability may be a more important indicator of current health status than metabolic markers in a fasting state.
AIM: In this parallel randomized controlled trial study, an energy-restricted healthy diet and 2 dietary challenges were used to assess the effect of weight loss on phenotypic flexibility.
METHODS: Seventy-two volunteers with overweight and obesity underwent a

BACKGROUND: Obesity remains a global health challenge, and responses to lifestyle-based weight-loss interventions are heterogeneous. Here, we evaluate a one-year structured lifestyle program in 50 adults with obesity (mean BMI 42 ± 7.0 kg/m2), integrating clinical, microbiome, and metabolomic profiling, to identify predictors of weight-loss success and metabolic improvement (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01344525). The intervention included a 3-month very low-calorie formula diet (approximately 850 kcal/day), a 3-month transition phase from a formula diet to a balanced diet (approximately 1000 kcal/d

BACKGROUND: Adequate peri-operative analgesia may reduce post-operative stress response and improve recovery in laboratory animals. We have established a method involving repeated automated blood sampling, allowing quantification of serum corticosterone levels in rats for stress assessment without stress-inducing handling or restraint. In the present study, the effects of the commonly used route of buprenorphine administration (0.05 mg/kg injected subcutaneously) were compared with oral administration (0.4 mg/kg mixed with Nutella and orally administered by voluntary ingestion) in male Sprague

Small bowel obstruction is an unusual complication of pregnancy. Its occurrence after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) for morbid obesity complicated by pregnancy is rare. Morbid obesity describes body weight at least 100 lb over the ideal weight, or a body mass index (BMI) > or = 40. Surgery offers the only viable treatment option with long-term weight loss and maintenance. This case report involves a 23-year-old female at 25 weeks gestation with a 1-day history of diffuse abdominal pain and vomiting. She had a RYGB with a 15 cc micropouch 6 months prior to the commencement of this pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is a growing concern, as workers may experience higher exposures compared to the general population. However, the contribution of occupational exposure to PFAS on overall body burden remains understudied.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify occupational groups with high PFAS body burden based on the data from 2013 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and assess potential health risks using the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) guidelines for clinicians

Longitudinal data indicate that our capacity for adaptive self-regulation is a relatively stable predisposition that appears in childhood and predicts future life successes. In 2004, we published the first study demonstrating decision-making deficits in overweight/obese adult women. The present study is an extension of these findings. We assessed obese women with (n=65) and without (n=73) binge-eating disorder (BED), and a group (n=71) of normal-weight women, on two neuropsychological tests: the Iowa Gambling Task and a Delay Discounting measure. The BED and obese groups had worse performance

To identify possible effects of horizontally polarized magnetic field (MF) exposure on maintenance of pregnancy and embryo-fetal development, an MF exposure system was designed and constructed and 96 time-mated female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (24/group) received continuous exposure to 60 Hz MF at field strengths of 0 (sham control) and 5, 83.3, or 500 microT (50, 833, or 5000 mG). Dams received MF or sham exposures for 22 h/day on gestational day 6-20. MF was monitored continuously throughout the study. There were no evidences of maternal toxicity or developmental toxicity in any MF exposed gr

Energy expenditure was measured in four geldings (433 to 520 kg) during submaximal exercise on a racetrack using a mobile open-circuit indirect respiration calorimeter. A total of 304 5-min measurements of O2 consumed and CO2 produced were taken. Measurements were made with and without riders. The amount of energy expended by the horses was exponentially related to speed and was proportional to the body weight of the riderless horse or the combined weight of the horse plus rider and tack. Total energy expended by the four horses walking, trotting, cantering was best described by the equation:
