Breech presentation is the most common abnormal fetal presentation and complicates approximately 3% to 4% of all pregnancies. External cephalic version (ECV) should be recommended to women with a breech singleton pregnancy, if there is no maternal or fetal contraindication. ECV increases the chance of cephalic presentation at the onset of labor and decreases the rate of cesarean delivery by almost 40%. The success rate of ECV is approximately 60%. BACKGROUND: External cephalic version (ECV) is an obstetric procedure that involves manually turning the fetus inside the pregnant woman's abdomen to change a breech or transverse presentation to a cephalic presentation. It can significantly increase the proportion of cephalic presentations during delivery and reduce the cesarean section rate for term singleton breech presentations, making it a relatively safe operation. Femoral fractures due to birth trauma are an extremely rare but important birth injury. While vaginal breech delivery, although rare, can cause femur fracture, abdominal breech delivery is not expected to cause fracture. Here we report on a low birth weight infant who was delivered by cesarean section for breech presentation at 30 1/7 weeks of gestation and sustained a unilateral fracture of the femoral shaft.

The records of the Medical Birth Registry of Norway from 1970 through 1988 contain information on maternal health, course of delivery and health of 1,059,479 newborns.
