Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are rare developmental anomalies that belong to the category of congenital enterogenous cysts. They arise from lung buds and are present at birth. The embryonic foregut is their origin. Typically, they are located within the chest cavity, particularly in the cavum mediastinale of the thoracic cavity or lodged in the pulmonary parenchyma, and are considered a type of lung bud malformation. CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital due to the detection of a retroperitoneal mass during a physical examination. Two weeks before admission, …

Intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst extirpated through median sternotomy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cyst sometimes occurs in the mediastinum and rarely in the intrapericardial space. When located in the intrapericardial space, the main vessels or the heart can be compressed. In addition, if it is difficult to deny malignancy or malignancy transformation potential using any modality, surgical resection should be performed. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 21-year-old woman with persistent symptoms similar to a cold. Enhanced computed tomography confirmed a 51 × 36 × 35-mm intrapericardial cystic structure with partial calcification. The lesion was large enough to…

Radioiodine-Avid Paravertebral Bronchogenic Cyst Mimicking Neurofibroma: A Diagnostic Pitfall.

The whole-body postablation scan of a 38-year-old man, with history of papillary thyroid cancer, revealed a focus of intense 131I accumulation about the lower thoracic vertebrae. SPECT/CT revealing a soft tissue lesion adjacent the T9 to T10 vertebrae, which was reported as neurofibroma on the subsequently performed MRI. However, the lesion was confirmed as a bronchogenic cyst on biopsy. Respecting that unlike neurofibroma, immunohistochemistry studies have confirmed Na-I symporter expression in bronchogenic epithelium; our case highlights that, although rare, paravertebral bronchogenic cysts …

Segmental Dilatation of Ileum Involving Bronchogenic Cyst in a Newborn.

Objective: Congenital segmental intestinal dilatation (SID) and bronchogenic cyst in the abdomen are two uncommon and different pathologies. We report a bronchogenic cyst associated with segmental intestinal dilatation. Case: A 2-day-old 3300 g term infant developed bilious vomiting. A jejunoileal segment with a diameter of 10 cm was detected at surgery. Histologically, the wall musculature and enteric plexus of the segmentally enlarged small intestine stained normally for CD117 and negative for calretinin. A bronchogenic cyst of 3 cm in diameter was centered on the mesenteric border of the di…

Bronchogenic cyst of gastric cardia - case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Intramural bronchogenic cysts of the esophagus are very rare. They are mostly found in the upper mediastinum. Symptoms are caused by compression of surrounding structures by the cyst or complications of the cyst. However, the majority are asymptomatic. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 30-year-old female patient who underwent surgery at our institution for a tumor of the gastric cardia protruding intraluminally. The tumor was found incidentally during upper endoscopy before a planned bariatric surgery. A solid lesion originating from the muscle layer of the cardia wall was …

Large intramedullary bronchogenic cyst of the cervical spine: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Spinal bronchogenic cysts are rare entities arising from errors in embryogenesis and consisting of respiratory epithelial cells. To date, there are three other published accounts of intramedullary cysts, which were partially resected and thereby warrant close follow-up and monitoring. The authors present an illustrative case of a patient presenting with Klippel-Feil anomaly and a large intramedullary bronchogenic cyst in the upper cervical spine. OBSERVATIONS: The authors noted fusion of the C5-6 laminae as they performed the C2-6 laminectomy. After dural opening, an intramedullar…

Bronchogenic cyst presenting as content of omphalocele - A case report.

Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a very rare congenital anomaly occurring due to budding of the primitive foregut, and its common location is the posterior mediastinum. BC when diagnosed prenatally can be treated if it is encroaching on the development of lungs. BC has been reported in other locations such as cervical, thoracic, abdominal sites and also as subcutaneous lesions. Omphalocele is a congenital malformation occurring due to a central defect in the abdominal wall with herniation of the viscera. The nonentity documented here was found in a female fetus with 20 weeks of gestational age. The m…

A giant intradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst: case report and literature review.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital lesions developing during early embryogenesis. The intradiaphragmatic location is extremely rare. We present a giant bronchogenic cyst arising from the left crus of diaphragm. Based on our literature review results, intradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts have the following characteristics: 1) they are more common in female patients; 2) the patients are usually asymptomatic, or present with symptoms of chest pain, abdominal pain, and hiccups; 3) the cysts located in the left diaphragm are more than those in the right diaphragm, most of which are located in the a…

Bronchogenic cyst arising from the crus of the left hemidiaphragm.

A 34-year-old man presented with chronic worsening left-sided retrosternal chest pain. Following a negative cardiac work up he was found, on cross-sectional imaging, to have a cystic mass measuring 9.6×11.8×9 cm related to his left diaphragmatic crus. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy with complete resection of the cystic mass. Histopathological examination of the mass confirmed it as being a bronchogenic cyst. His pain resolved following excision of the mass and at follow-up he was asymptomatic with no evidence of recurrence on imaging.

Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst in the thoracic cavity: a case report.

This case report presents an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst exhibiting a unique shape. The patient was a 19-year-old man who had been diagnosed with a posterior mediastinal tumor by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, 2 years previously. The imaging revealed that the tumor was located on the left side of the posterior mediastinum and was 45 × 25 mm in size. As the size and shape of the tumor did not change in the 2 years after its detection, surgical extraction was planned. Preoperative diagnosis was, firstly, a neurogenic tumor originating in the posterior mediastinum.Surgic…

Video-assisted mediastinoscopic resection of a large symptomatic bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital lesions from the primitive foregut, mostly located in the mediastinum. Surgical excision in symptomatic cases is often challenging. Video-assisted mediastinoscopy offers a safe and effective approach with less morbidity and shorter hospital stay compared to open sternotomy or posterolateral thoracotomy. We describe a case of a young female with a large symptomatic cyst located in the superior mediastinum. The cyst was completely removed through a video-assisted cervical mediastinoscopy.

Infected mediastinal bronchogenic cyst in a 12 year old girl.

Bronchogenic cysts are an uncommon congenital malformation deriving from the primitive foregut. They are mainly unilocular, and respiratory distress is the most common presentation in pediatric patients. We describe the case of a 12-year-old girl with a huge infected mediastinal bronchogenic cyst which was resected via an axillary muscle-sparing thoracotomy.

[Unusual location of a bronchogenic cyst simulating a pancreatic tumor].

We report a 37-year woman with a history of acute cholangitis in whom a bronchogenic cyst was misdiagnosed as a pancreatic neoplasm on the basis of the clinical and radiological findings. Infradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts are rare and can sometimes mimic a pancreatic carcinoma.

An adult case of giant bronchogenic cyst mimicking tension pneumothorax.

Bronchogenic cysts are usually discovered only incidentally in the adult. A giant bronchogenic cyst in a 19-year-old woman presenting with pain and shortness of breath was mistaken for tension pneumothorax and initially treated with tube thoracostomy. Giant bullae were diagnosed by computed tomography. Bullae resection was undertaken, but the remaining lung tissue required pneumonectomy. Pathologic examination of the specimen confirmed bronchogenic cyst.

A case of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst treated by laparoscopic surgery.

We describe herein a rare case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst successfully treated by laparoscopic surgery. A 39-year-old man with low-grade fever was referred to our hospital because of suspicion of an adrenal tumor. Abdominal computerized tomography (CT) and ultrasonography revealed a homogenous solid mass, 35 x 30 mm in diameter, in the left suprarenal region. Laboratory studies showed that the levels of adrenal hormones were normal except for the white blood cell count of 9,700/microL and C-reactive protein of 1.7 mg/dl. We diagnosed it as a non-functioning adrenocortical adenoma o…
