Mountain mortality: a review of deaths that occur during recreational activities in the mountains.

The growing popularity of activities such as hiking, climbing, skiing and snowboarding has ensured that the number of visitors to mountain e … ths in the mountains are most commonly due to trauma, high altitude illness, cold injury, avalanche burial and sudden cardiac death. This review describes the mortality rates of those who undertake recreational activities in the mountains and examines the aetiology that lies behind them.

When the 'dead' are still alive: Systemic failures in assessing neonates in Nepal.

Wrongful declaration of death in premature newborns continues in Nepal notwithstanding modern medical advances. We describe four cases of neonates who were wrongly declared dead and later found to be alive. This report aims to analyse the systemic failures that contributed to these outcomes which were identified over 6 years (2019-2025) through 'grey' literature. All these premature neonates were found alive hours later, some when enroute to cremation or burial. These cases highlight minimal or absent vital signs assessment before declaration of death was wrongly made and was shockingly neglig…

Culture, Psychiatry and Epigenetics.

Regarding the methodology of ethnopsychiatric research, for example, on the Vietnamese Mo Mường's burial rituals or the health-promoting and healing effects of the Chinese Tujia dances, three different approaches can be distinguished: phenomenological-descriptive methods, hermeneutic-interpretive techniques and studies on underlying mechanisms such as hypnotherapeutic or neuroendocrine dynamics. Since epigenetics has shown that cultural and artistic experiences can influence gene expression and genetic functioning, even across generations, the article argues for greater consideration of epigen…

From the jaws of the "Leviathan": A sperm whale tooth from the Valencina Copper Age Megasite.

During the excavations undertaken in 2018 at the Nueva Biblioteca sector of the Valencina Copper Age mega-site, in south-west Spain, an exceptional sperm-whale tooth was found inside a non-burial pit. This remarkable object is the first of its kind ever found for Late Prehistoric Iberia. Due to its rarity and importance, a multidisciplinary study was carried out, including photogrammetric 3D modelling, as well as taphonomic, paleontological, technological and contextual analysis. This led to a full characterisation of the artefact through the analysis of its bioerosion traces, anthropogenic ma…

Millennium-old pathogenic Mendelian mutation discovery for multiple osteochondromas from a Gaelic Medieval graveyard.

Only a limited number of genetic diseases are diagnosable in archaeological individuals and none have had causal mutations identified in genome-wide screens. Two individuals from the Gaelic Irish Medieval burial ground of Ballyhanna, Co. Donegal, showed evidence of bone tumours consistent with the autosomal dominant condition multiple osteochondromas. Genome sequencing of the earlier individual uncovered a missense mutation in the second exon of EXT1, a specific lesion that has been identified in several modern patients. The later individual lacked this but displayed a novel frameshift mutatio…

Massive haemoptysis caused by a long-standing foreign body in the airway.

The presence of foreign bodies (FB) in the airway is a potentially life-threatening event. We encountered a rare case of long-standing bronc … keyhole-shaped, composed of a plastic-like material, with an appearance akin to an ancient Japanese burial mound. This case was extremely unique, since a strange FB remained in the bronchi for a long time, which caused massive haemoptysis due to the dilation of the bronchial artery.

The utility of 3D medical imaging techniques for obtaining a reliable differential diagnosis of metastatic cancer in an Iron Age skull.

In this report we present a case of neoplastic disease affecting an Iron Age skull that provides some of the earliest evidence of metastatic cancer (MC) in Western Europe. The cranium comes from the indigenous site of Baucina (Palermo, Sicily) and was recovered in a multiple burial context dated to the 6th-5th centuries BCE. The skull was attributed to an adult female and was characterized by numerous perforating lytic lesions. CT and 3D imaging analyses were crucial for obtaining a diagnosis of MC. Based on the morphology of the lytic lesions and the biological profile of our specimen, we can…

Rituals of infant death: defining life and Islamic personhood.

This article is about the recognition of personhood when death occurs in early life. Drawing from anthropological perspectives on personhood at the beginnings and ends of life, it examines the implications of competing religious and customary definitions of personhood for a small sample of young British Pakistani Muslim women who experienced miscarriage and stillbirth. It suggests that these women's concerns about the lack of recognition given to the personhood of their fetus or baby constitute a challenge to customary practices surrounding burial as a Muslim. The article suggests that these w…

The Medecins Sans Frontieres intervention in the Marburg hemorrhagic fever epidemic, Uige, Angola, 2005. I. Lessons learned in the hospital.

When the epidemic of Marburg hemorrhagic fever occurred in Uige, Angola, during 2005, the international response included systems of case detection and isolation, community education, the burial of the dead, and disinfection. However, despite large investments of staff and money by the organizations involved, only a fraction of the reported number of cases were isolated, and many cases were detected only after death. This article describes the response of Medecins Sans Frontieres Spain within the provincial hospital in Uige, as well as the lessons they learned during the epidemic. Diagnosis, m…

Healed Depressed Parasagittal Skull Fractures-A Feature of Archaic Australian Aboriginal Remains.

The skeletal remains of eight Australian Aboriginals with healed depressed skull fractures were examined. Male:female ratio 5:3; age range 20-60 yrs. Burial dates by 14 C dating in three cases were 500 years BP (n = 2) and 1300 BP. There were 13 healed depressed skull fractures manifested by shallow indentations of cortical bone and thinning of diploe, with no significant disturbance of the inner skull tables. Nine (69%) were located within 35 mm of the sagittal suture/midline. These lesions represent another acquired feature that might be helpful in suggesting that a skull is from a tribal Ab…

[Avalanche rescue 2024-Current recommendations].

Avalanche accidents in which winter sports enthusiasts are involved have significantly increased but the number of deaths remains stable due to better prevention and rescue. Avalanche accidents are frequent in mountainous regions and there are around 100 fatalities each year in Europe. The chances of survival are mainly determined by the degree and duration of avalanche burial, a possible airway obstruction, the presence of an air pocket, the snow characteristics and possible severe injuries. The most frequent cause of death is asphyxia, followed by trauma. Hypothermia accounts for only a mino…
