BACKGROUND: Malondialdehyde (MDA) is one of the better-known secondary products of lipid peroxidation, and it is widely used as an indicator of cellular injury. The employment of the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) technique to measure MDA has received criticism over the years because of its lack of specificity. Thus, a specific and reliable method for MDA determination in plasma by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC)-VIS was validated; alkaline hydrolysis, n-butanol extraction steps and MDA stability were established.
METHODS: The plasma underwent alkaline hydrolys

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is the most extensively studied risk factor for gastric cancer. As with any bacteria, H. pylori will release distinctive odors that result from an emission of volatile metabolic byproducts in unique combinations and proportions. Effectively capturing and identifying these volatiles can pave the way for the development of innovative and non-invasive diagnostic methods for determining infection. Here we characterize the H. pylori volatilomic signature, pinpoint potential biomarkers of its presence, and evaluate the variability of volatilomic

Streptomyces caespitosus neutral protease (ScNP) is one of the smallest metalloproteinase with a molecular mass of 14 kDa. Effects of solvent composition on ScNP activity were examined using a peptide substrate. The k(cat)/K(m) values of ScNP exhibited bell-shaped pH-dependence with the optimal pH of 6.4-7.0 and the pK(a) values of 5.0 +/- 0.1 and 8.3 +/- 0.1. ScNP activity increased in an exponential fashion with increasing [NaCl]. The relative k(cat)/K(m) value at 3.6 M NaCl to that at 0 M NaCl was 3.7, and the degree of the activation at x M NaCl was expressed as 1.2 (x) (x < 2.0) and 1.4(x

The extraction and spectrophotometric determination of vanadium (V) with oxine is investigated at higher acidities than described previously. Under these conditions, n-butanol and other alcohols are found to exert a synergic effect on the extraction of vanadium into benzene. In the presence of alcohol only a 6-fold ligand excess is needed for quantitative extraction in a single operation, the acidity of the aqueous medium being 0.05M with respect to sulphuric or phosphoric acid. The interference of iron(III) in the spectrophotometric determination of vanadium is suppressed by the addition of p

We present a method for determining eight penicillin antibiotics using microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC). We studied how the composition of the microemulsion affected separation by modifying such parameters as the surfactant or the addition of organic solvents. The best microemulsion system consisted of 0.5% ethyl acetate, 1.2% 1-butanol, 2% Brij 35, 10% 2-butanol and 86.3% 10 mM borate buffer at pH 10. We studied the suitability of this microemulsion composition for analyzing a commercial drug. To improve the sensitivity of the method, we used the stacking technique reversed

Adsorption isotherms of binary aqueous solutions of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, tert-butanol, and 1-butanol are demonstrated, being calculated by using the Gibbs adsorption equation with experimental data of surface tension and vapor pressure found in the literature. For all of the alcohol-water mixtures, the maximum value in the adsorption isotherm, namely, the maximum surface excess is about that expected for the formation of a monolayer. Furthermore, the composition of the mixture for the maximum surface excess coincides with that corresponding to the minimum in the excess pa
