Leg ulcers are not a disease themselves, they are a symptom of a disease. To manage them properly, finding the correct diagnosis of the disease is mandatory. Our case is a model to underline that leg ulcers are a significant burden for the patient, because leg ulcer got ahead of the patient's other serious complaints such as Raynaud's phenomenon or sclerodactyly. Furthermore, our patient is also a model, and an attentive clinical evaluation is inevitable to find the correct diagnosis. We present our case aiming to underline the significance of full dermatologic examination in each ulceration t

An 8 yr old male English bulldog receiving treatment for immune-mediated thrombocytopenia was diagnosed with calcinosis cutis 90 days after initiation of corticosteroid therapy. Twenty-four days later, the patient presented in a comatose state after collapsing and was euthanized. Postmortem examination revealed coronary arteriosclerosis and myocardial infarction leading to congestive heart failure. Calcinosis cutis and myocardial necrosis were most likely complications associated with administration of corticosteroids in this dog. Important implications regarding the classification of calcinos…

Systemic sclerosis sine scleroderma is a rare form of limited cutaneous scleroderma. These patients manifest without cutaneous involvement, but do not differ in its clinical or laboratory features and prognosis from classical systemic sclerosis. In the absence of cutaneous signs/symptoms, its diagnosis is delayed leading to morbidity. The exact prevalence of dystrophic calcification in systemic sclerosis sine scleroderma, though a feature of systemic sclerosis, is not known. Development of dystrophic calcification further aggravates patient's woes. This paper describes systemic sclerosis sine

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis cutis is a rare condition, characterized by an accumulation of calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. There are several types of this condition, including dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, calciphylaxis, and iatrogenic calcinosis cutis. The type related to our case is iatrogenic calcinosis cutis, and one its possible causes is calcium intravenous infusion. Physicians should be aware of this condition when giving calcium infusion.

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis is very rare and difficult to treat. Various medical modalities of treatment described with inconsistent results include chelating agents, colchicine, and probenecid. Calcium channel blockers are known to work by inhibiting intracellular entry of calcium. We successfully treated a case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis using oral diltiazem.

Calcinosis cutis is characterized by deposition of calcium salts in the subcutaneous tissues in the body. In this study, we described a case of calcinosis cutis that was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA) in a 15-year-old male. The patient presented with multiple nodules over right forearm and right knee. FNA smears showed flakes of amorphous material indicating calcium along with few macrophages. The presence of amorphous calcium salts along with histiocytes in the appropriate clinical settings is diagnostic of calcinosis cutis.
