Determinations of serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), calcitonin (CT), and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were carried out in 36 full-term newborn infants with fracture of the clavicle (CF) and in 46 normal neonates (N). The blood calcitonin and calcium content was studied in 38 patients with thyrotoxicosis, 20 subjects with endemic euthyroid goiter and 7 persons with primary hypothyrosis. Calcitonin has been helpful in the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta tarda inhibiting bone mineral resorption. The experience with salmon calcitonin in the early treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta congenita is very limited. Here we report an infant with this disorder treated with calcitonin from 3 to 15 months of age with clinical and radiographic improvement.

In a study of the effect of pinealectomy on thyroid C-cell number, 8 animals out of 66 were found to have thymic tissue in close association with the thyroid. Ectopic production of multiple peptide hormones is a frequent concomitant of neoplasia. An elderly man with metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung presented with back pain, a right hilar mass, and was demonstrated to have markedly elevated serum calcitonin and amylase levels. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed a striking elevation of a "salivary type" isoamylase. We report this case as an unusual association of production of both a peptide hormone and a nonhormonal peptide in a patient with a tumor of "neural crest" origin.

Renal effects of synthetic salmon calcitonin (CT) were examined in normal and parathyroidectomized (PTX) starlings, Sturnus vulgaris. Standard clearance studies were performed. Four patients with thyrotoxicosis, hypercalcaemia and metabolic bone disease are described. One of them had a 'hot nodule', T3 toxicosis and a parathyroid tumour and another had thin bones, subperiosteal cortical bone erosions and complete dysphagia. Hypercalcaemia persisted during treatment with antithyroid drugs in two patients, both of whom had hyperparathyroidism. INTRODUCTION: It has been observed in recent years that levels of such molecules as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and, to a lesser extent, the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide are elevated during migraine attacks and in chronic migraine, both in the cerebrospinal fluid and in the serum. Pharmacological reduction of these proteins is clinically significant, with an improvement in patients' migraines. Neuropathic pain associated with spinal cord injury is caused by complex neural mechanisms and is often refractory to standard therapy. Salmon calcitonin was an effective treatment for neuropathic symptoms in this case series of three patients with recent spinal cord injury. AIM: Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a potential mediator of neurogenic inflammation in eczema, psoriasis and rosacea, and also contributes to vasodilatation and oedema in complex regional pain disorder.
