Safe2Play in youth ice hockey: injury profile and risk factors in a 5-year Canadian longitudinal cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Ice hockey is a popular global sport with growing participation for boys and girls yet remains a high-risk sport for injury. While the evidence for some risk factors, such as bodychecking policy is well established, other risk factors such as player sex have been understudied. The objectives of this study were to examine factors associated with rates of game-related injury, game-related injury resulting in >7 days of time-loss, and practice-related injury in youth ice hockey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Safe2Play was a five-year prospective cohort study (2013-2018). All injuries were

IgE Sensitization Patterns of Mothers and Their Offspring in the First Five Years of Life The CHILD Study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding allergic sensitization patterns, which act as indicators for allergic diseases, is crucial for prevention, early diagnosis, treatment strategies, and trial design. Molecular allergology can be more precise and helps to identify patients with food allergy with a high pre-test probability. Unfortunately, sensitization data at a molecular level are limited for North American birth cohorts. In the CHILD study, we aimed to identify allergic sensitization in Canadian mothers and follow the longitudinal trajectories of their children from ages 1-5 years for the most crucial

Roles of Birth Mode and Infant Gut Microbiota in Intergenerational Transmission of Overweight and Obesity From Mother to Offspring.

IMPORTANCE: Maternal overweight, which often results in cesarean delivery, is a strong risk factor for child overweight. Little is known about the joint contribution of birth mode and microbiota in the infant gut to the association between maternal prepregnancy overweight and child overweight. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of birth mode with microbiota in the infant gut, and whether this mediates the association between maternal and child overweight. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: An observational study was conducted of 935 full-term infants born between January 1, 2009, and

Causal Effects of Plasma Metabolites on Intervertebral Disc Degeneration and Low Back Pain: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic disturbances have been implicated in intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) and low back pain, but the contribution of circulating metabolites remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: We examined associations of genetically proxied plasma metabolites and metabolite ratios with IVDD outcomes defined at different anatomical locations and with a related pain phenotype. METHODS: Summary statistics for metabolite exposures were obtained from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Ageing (CLSA) plasma metabolome genome-wide association study (GWAS). The outcomes were Intervertebral Disc D

Sustained illness burden over time among Australians with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a disabling chronic illness. Many people with ME/CFS (pwME/CFS) are unable to continue employment and require support to complete activities of daily living. Despite this, ME/CFS remains unrecognised as a disability in Australia. The present study aimed to highlight the profound burdens experienced by pwME/CFS over time to provide evidence of permanency and necessitate reforms to Australian healthcare policies. METHODS: Data were collected for this longitudinal investigation between 1st October 2021 and 3rd October 202

Identifying Selected Mental Health, Physical, and Social Determinants of Extended Length of Stay After Elective Cardiac Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death among Canadians, with approximately 40 000 open-heart surgeries such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valve replacements performed annually. The best practices after cardiac surgery include a hospital stay of 4 to 7 days to facilitate safe discharge. We explored associations between an extended length of stay and selected mental, physical, and social determinants of health routinely collected before surgery, with the aim of informing the development of a future prescreening instrument to better identify patient

Investigation of the Gut Microbiome in Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia Compared to Healthy Controls: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study: Étude du microbiome intestinal chez les patients atteints de schizophrénie résistante au traitement par rapport aux témoins sains : étude pilote transversale.

BackgroundSchizophrenia (SCZ) is a debilitating disorder affecting approximately 1% of the Canadian population and remains a major contributor to disease burden and disability. Up to one-third of individuals with SCZ are affected by treatment-resistant SCZ (TRS). Clozapine remains the most effective treatment for TRS. However, its use is limited by serious metabolic and immune-related side effects. The gut microbiome may be a potential contributor to both SCZ pathology and antipsychotic-induced side effects, though studies examining this in the clozapine-treated TRS population remain limited.M

Mental health status of sexually diverse youth at age 23: Cross-sectional data from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development.

OBJECTIVES: Canadian population-based data show that sexually diverse youth face greater mental health challenges than their heterosexual peers. However, nuances within sexual diversity-particularly among mostly heterosexual persons-are overlooked, and psychotic-like experiences remain underexplored. We examined the mental health of sexually diverse young adults from Quebec, spanning indicators from well-being to psychotic-like experiences. METHODS: Data were drawn from 1324 youth from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development-a representative cohort born in 1997/98 and followed up u

Maternal psychological distress before birth influences gut immunity in mid-infancy.

BACKGROUND: Maternal pre-postnatal psychosocial distress increases the risk for childhood allergic disease. This may occur through a host immunity pathway that involves intestinal secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA). Experimental animal models show changes in the gut microbiome and immunity of offspring when exposed to direct or prenatal maternal stress, but little is known in humans. OBJECTIVE: We determined the association between maternal depression and stress symptom trajectories and infant fecal sIgA concentrations. METHODS: 1043 term infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal

Understanding Motor Adaptation in the Transition to Sustained Pain: Protocol for a Longitudinal Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects over 30% of the global population and remains a major public health issue due to limited treatment efficacy and the need for mechanism-based, personalized approaches. Motor behavior is theorized to play a role in pain persistence through altered movement patterns, muscle recruitment, and proprioception. While motor behavior is linked to chronic pain, empirical evidence on underlying mechanisms, particularly cortical dynamics, remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate longitudinal changes in cortical sensorimotor excitability and their relation

Early Detection of Asthma: Exploring Inflammatory Biomarkers in Symptomatic Adults with Normal Spirometry.

INTRODUCTION: We previously showed that individuals without a prior history of asthma, presenting with unexplained respiratory symptoms and normal spirometry, may exhibit airway hyperresponsiveness and underlying eosinophilic (T2) inflammation, features suggestive of undiagnosed early-stage asthma. Improving our understanding of the inflammatory processes that contribute to asthma onset is essential, as it may ultimately lead to earlier detection, timely intervention and improved long-term outcomes. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate several key inflammatory biomarkers in this well-charact
