Acquired capillary malformations are rare vascular anomalies composed of dilated capillaries in the skin. We present a pediatric case of an acquired capillary malformation as a novel presentation of the PIK3CA-related overgrowth syndromes. Using next-generation sequencing, we identified a PIK3CA p.Val344Met mutation within the acquired capillary malformation with possible prognostic and therapeutic significance.

AIMS: Capillary zone electrophoresis (CE) at alkaline pH is increasingly used in haemoglobinopathy diagnosis. We report our evaluation of automated CE, using the Capillarys 2 Flex Piercing instrument, as a routine diagnostic method for the detection of variant haemoglobins and the diagnosis of β thalassaemia.

We report posterior mediastinal hemangioma in a 14-year-old girl patient with an extensive hemangioma encompassing the thoracic aorta, associated with complex coarctation. The masses were identified by contrast-enhanced computed tomography. An extra-anatomical bypass was made by grafting from the ascending to the distal descending aorta. Histological evaluation of the surgical specimens established the final diagnosis. Presence of mediastinal hemangiomas should be regarded as an important differential diagnosis of coarctation of aorta, although these are very rare tumors.

Alveolar capillary dysplasia (ACD) is an uncommon cause of irreversible persistent pulmonary hypertension in full-term newborn. In ACD there is a failure of formation of air - blood barrier in addition to misalignment of pulmonary veins. The etiology of the disease is still not understood. We present a case report of a full-term newborn with ACD associated with anorectal anomaly.

Hemangiomas, which are usually found in the skin, are extremely rare in an intradural location. An unusual case of capillary hemangioma intimate to the cauda equina is discussed. This entity has not previously been reported in the pediatric or adolescent population to the best of our knowledge, although it has been reported in adults.

A simple method for immune complexes (IC) analysis by CE is described. This method combines the ease of precipitation of the IC by polyethylene glycol with the separation power of CE. The advantage of this method is a better quantitation of the IC, since it corrects and eliminates the interferences from other serum proteins. It also reveals the composition (monoclonality) of the precipitate. Three types of IC have been detected in this method: monoclonal, polyclonal and mixed (mono-polyclonal) IC. Furthermore, the method is rapid and simple.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a previously unreported condition of the neonatal larynx.
DESIGN: Case series of 4 neonates with an uncommon laryngeal lesion.
SETTING: Tertiary care children's hospital.
PATIENTS: Four neonates in the first 10 days of life with stridor, hoarseness, and respiratory distress.
INTERVENTION: The patients were examined using flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy, and laryngeal lesions were identified and subsequently removed using microlaryngoscopy. Photodocumentation of the lesions was performed. Microscopic evaluation of biopsy specimens by a pathologist followed.
