Combining aggregate and individual-level data to estimate individual-level associations between air pollution and COVID-19 mortality in the United States.

Imposing stricter regulations for PM2.5 has the potential to mitigate damaging health and climate change effects. Recent evidence establishi … -resolution estimates of PM2.5 concentrations obtained from a validated model and aggregated to the census tract for the contiguous United States. We apply a Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach to combine county-, census tract-, and individual-level data to ultimately draw inference about individual-level associations between long-term exposure to PM2.5 an …

Economic Stressors, Alcohol Use, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Middle-aged Adults.

The present study explored associations between individual economic stressors, community disadvantage, alcohol use, and physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in middle adulthood. We analyzed two waves of survey and census tract data from a national sample of N = 1359 adults ages 40-61 (65.0% women). High economic stress was associated with poor physical and mental HRQoL, and high community disadvantage was linked to poor physical HRQoL only. High alcohol use predicted high physical and mental HRQoL, and low misuse predicted high mental HRQoL only. There was no evidence of …

Occupational characteristics are missing from heat vulnerability indices: a study in New York and New Jersey.

BACKGROUND: Heat vulnerability indices and maps are widely used by government agencies to guide heat-prevention strategies and prioritize resources for at-risk communities. However, these tools typically exclude the occupational characteristics of the population, a salient source of heat exposure. METHODS: To examine how occupation might enrich these tools, we developed a method to generate Census tract-level estimates of occupational heat exposure risk for employed residents using publicly available data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Information Network (O*NET) and the…

Socioeconomic risk factors for breast cancer: distinguishing individual- and community-level effects.

BACKGROUND: Women are at higher risk of breast cancer if they have higher socioeconomic status (SES) or live in higher SES or urban communities. We examined whether women living in such communities remained at greater risk of breast cancer after controlling for individual education and other known individual-level risk factors. METHODS: Data were from a population-based, breast cancer case-control study conducted in Wisconsin from 1988 to 1995 (n = 14,667). Data on community SES and urbanicity come from the 1990 census, measured at the census tract and zip code levels. We evaluated relationsh…

Parental health and adolescent obesity in the context of community disadvantage.

This study examined whether parental physical health, including obesity, is associated with adolescent obesity considering the context and level of community disadvantage using survey data from 13,907 adolescents (12-18 years of age) and their parent(s) from Wave 1 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health as well as 1990 census tract data. Poor parental health, particularly obesity, is associated with adolescent obesity, even in disadvantaged contexts; however, community disadvantage moderates this relationship suggesting parental health factors are less salient in terms of adol…

Marine microplastic concentration and associations with stroke and chronic disease prevalence.

Microplastics (MPs), synthetic polymer particles <5 mm, are emerging environmental contaminants with potential cardiometabolic relevance. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 709 coastal census tracts ( < 200 meters from shoreline) by linking NOAA marine microplastic measurements with chronic disease prevalence estimates from the CDC PLACES database. A total of 154 demographic, socioeconomic, and environmental variables including age, sex, race, median household income, Social Vulnerability Index, insurance coverage, and PM2.5 were incorporated to adjust for confounding. Adjusted Poisson…

U.S. Highway 71 and Social Determinants of Health: Long-Term Disparities in Earnings, Economic Mobility, Incarceration, and Teen Birth in Kansas City.

A growing body of research has revisited the social costs of U.S. interstate highways. In Kansas City, U.S. Highway 71 (Bruce R. Watkins Drive) was built through the city's East Side over nearly two decades, displacing residents, destroying community institutions, and raising safety and health concerns. Using Opportunity Atlas data, we compare long-term outcomes-income, economic mobility, incarceration, and teen birth-for the 1978-1983 cohorts by childhood residence: census tracts along the Highway 71 corridor versus other tracts in Kansas City. At age 35, those who grew up along the Highway 7…

Risk factors for Schistosoma haematobium infection and morbidity in two villages with different transmission patterns in Niger.

A better control of major neglected tropical diseases such as schistosomiasis is urgently needed to reduce their impact on public health in developing countries. To optimize the efficiency of intervention campaigns, we assessed the influence of individual human factors on the level of Schistosoma haematobium infection and morbidity in a typical Sahelian country (Niger). Random samples of 246 and 257 individuals were selected from general census in two villages with distinct patterns of schistosome transmission. One village (Lossa) is located in an area of perennial transmission whereas transmi

Estimating the Exposure-Response Relationship between Fine Mineral Dust Concentration and Coccidioidomycosis Incidence Using Speciated Particulate Matter Data: A Longitudinal Surveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: Coccidioidomycosis, caused by inhalation of Coccidioides spp. spores, is an emerging infectious disease that is increasing in incidence throughout the southwestern US. The pathogen is soil-dwelling, and spore dispersal and human exposure are thought to co-occur with airborne mineral dust exposures, yet fundamental exposure-response relationships have not been conclusively estimated. OBJECTIVES: We estimated associations between fine mineral dust concentration and coccidioidomycosis incidence in California from 2000 to 2017 at the census tract level, spatiotemporal heterogeneity in…

Critical interactions between race and the highly granular area deprivation index in liver transplant evaluation.

Neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation may have important implications on disparities in liver transplant (LT) evaluation. In this retrospective cohort study, we constructed a novel dataset by linking individual patient-level data with the highly granular Area Deprivation Index (ADI), which is advantageous over other neighborhood measures due to: specificity of Census Block-Group (versus Census Tract, Zip code), scoring, and robust variables. Our cohort included 1377 adults referred to our center for LT evaluation 8/1/2016-12/31/2019. Using modified Poisson regression, we tested for effect mea…
