A clinical functional status was obtained and an instrumental analysis of functional movement patterns of the mandible using the ultrasonic Jaw Motion Analyzer (JMA, Zebris; Isny, Germany) was performed on 259 subjects (100 male, 159 female) who were part of an associated project of the representative population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP 0). Standardized bilateral "arbitrary" skin points based on anatomical skin references were assumed as posterior reference points in the joint area. The recorded movement patterns were evaluated for condylar movement capacity right and left upon

IgG4-related disease is a novel lymphoproliferative disorder that shows hyper-IgG4-γ-globulinemia and IgG4-producing plasma cell expansion in affected organs with fibrotic or sclerotic changes. Patients show systemic inflammatory conditions and various symptoms depending on the affected organ. Since the first report of patients with elevated serum IgG4 in sclerosing pancreatitis in 2001, various systemic disorders described by many names have been reported. Despite similarities in the organs involved in IgG4-related Mikulicz's disease and Sjögren's syndrome, there are marked clinical and patho

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is the most common adult motor neuron disease, now viewed as a spectrum disorder rather than a single entity. Because of the significant person-to-person variability in the disease's biology, driven by both genetic and environmental interactions, finding a single "magic bullet" drug is unlikely. Despite decades of research, only a few ALS drugs have being developed. Drug discovery has a 95% failure rate due to genetic complexity, lack of sensitive biomarkers, diagnostic delays, inadequate animal models, and poor clinical trial design.

Adaptive decision-making depends on the integration of reward valuation with internal bodily and action-related signals; yet, this broader neural architecture is not fully captured by reward-centric models. Emerging evidence suggests that bodily self-awareness - including interoception and sense of agency - may shape reward-driven behaviour, but its large-scale neural organization and clinical relevance remain unclear. Here, we integrated existing evidence to examine the systems-level relationship between neural circuits supporting bodily self-awareness and those involved in reward valuation.

OBJECTIVES: To avoid the use of carbapenems, alternatives such as cephamycin, piperacillin-tazobactam, and others are suggested for the treatment of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and the feasibility of antimicrobial de-escalation for ESBL-PE-related infections.
METHODS: A prospective observational, bi centric cohort study was conducted. All patients with ESBL-PE infections were included. De-escalation was systematically suggested if patients were clinically stable and the isolate was susc

Despite advances in reproductive medicine, a widely acceptable male contraceptive method is still lacking, leaving the burden of birth control largely on women. As a result, female-centric methods continue to dominate global contraceptive trends, as male options are limited to condoms and vasectomy, both of which are constrained by issues related to reliability, reversibility, or social acceptability. Adoption of novel methods in this regard remains low as well due to social perceptions, myths surrounding masculinity, and concerns regarding side effects. This study was conducted as a narrative

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has long been conceptualized as a disorder of dysregulated immunity, yet growing evidence highlights the intestinal epithelium as an active determinant of disease behavior and therapeutic response. This editorial synthesizes contributions in the current issue that collectively redefine IBD through a tissue-centric lens, emphasizing barrier integrity, epithelial lineage specialization, antigen sampling, innate immune amplification, and environmental modulation. While epithelial-targeted and gut-directed therapies are biologically compelling, their successful tra

This paper investigates the representation of drug addiction in Pakistani English print media articles using a topic modelling algorithm known as Latent Dirichlet Allocation. The data, based on 4,100 articles (2014-2023), were collected from the widely circulated newspaper, The News International. The data were retrieved from the LexisNexis database. This research employs Grounded Theory, a data-driven approach that generates explanations or theories from the data. The results showed that drug addiction is presented as interconnected themes, placed in a broader social and institutional context

Conventional BMI-based classifications, even when combined with traditional cardiometabolic risk factors, limit precision in aging-related risk assessment. Here, we perform metabolomic analysis in 13,202 older adults from the natural aging cohort (NCT04517513). Leveraging a panel of 39 core metabolites, we develop accurate and interpretable machine learning models to identify metabolic dysfunction across different BMI categories, achieving area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) ranging from 0.763 to 0.801. These models reveal both shared metabolic alterations and obesity-

Fear memory is a critical adaptive process that enables organisms to avoid potential threats and survive in complex environments. Traditionally viewed as a neuronal phenomenon, emerging evidence has demonstrated that astrocytes play a fundamental role in fear memory acquisition, consolidation, extinction, and retrieval across the distributed neural network encompassing the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. This review presents recent advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which astrocytes modulate fear memory processing within the tripartite circuit. We examin

Autoimmune pancreatitis is a fibroinflammatory subtype of chronic pancreatitis resulting from aberrant immune responses. Currently, there are two forms of autoimmune pancreatitis: type 1 (T1-AIP) or lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis and type 2, also known as idiopathic duct-centric chronic pancreatitis. T1-AIP is often identified as the pancreatic appearance of immunoglobulin 4 (IgG4)-related disease. T1-AIP commonly appears in the seventh decade of life with a considerable male predominance, frequently associated with elevations in serum IgG4 levels and IgG4-positive cells on tissue b

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the progressive loss of motor neurons. Although it is traditionally viewed as a neuron-centric disease, neurodegeneration is increasingly linked to immunosenescence and age-related immune dysfunction, but the mechanisms connecting immune ageing to neurodegeneration remain poorly understood. In this review, we explore how metabolic reprogramming, especially the loss of metabolic plasticity in senescent immune cells, drives neuroinflammation in ALS. Senescent immune cells, including microglia and T cells, exhibit

Migratory birds are key vectors of pathogens and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs), yet intrapopulation variation and its microbiome-mediated basis remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized the gut microbiome of 70 individuals from a migratory Anser serrirostris population using full-length 16S rDNA sequencing, followed by metagenomic analysis of 25 representative samples. Both approaches consistently identified two distinct groups (E1 and E2). Network analysis revealed impaired microbial interactions in E1 compared to E2. E1 exhibited higher abundances of opportunistic pathogens (e.g.

Inter-regulation between related genes, such as ribosomal protein (RP) paralogs, has been observed to be important for genetic compensation and paralog-specific functions. However, how paralogs communicate to modulate their expression levels is unknown. Here, we report a circular RNA involved in the inter-regulation between RP paralogs RpL22 and RpL22-like during Drosophila spermatogenesis. Both paralogs are mutually regulated by the circular stable intronic sequence RNA (sisRNA) circRpL22(NE,3S) produced from the RpL22 locus. RpL22 represses itself and RpL22-like. Interestingly, circRpL22 bin

There are many tobacco users who wish to quit. In some cases, ostracism related to religious proscriptions serves as a barrier and prevents them from revealing their addiction status. Religion as an institution has an immense influence on human behaviour. It contributes to the cultural identity of individuals, moderating uniformity in their behaviour and social life. We describe a case from a province in Punjab in North India, where tobacco use is a 'taboo' due to the widely practised faith of Sikhism. The case illustrates how a doctoral thesis student, along with the healthcare providers at a
