A novel bioactive glass-ceramic for treating dentin hypersensitivity.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a painful response to stimulus applied to the open dentinal tubules of a vital tooth. It's a common oral condition, however, without an ideal treatment available yet. This work evaluated in vitro the effect of micron-sized particles from a novel bioactive glass-ceramic (Biosilicate) in occluding open dentinal tubules. A dentin disc model was employed to observe comparatively, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dentinal tubule occlusion by different products and deposition of hydroxyl carbonate apatite (HCA) on dentin surface by Biosilicate, after a single

A core fracture with all-ceramic crowns: a case report.

This article is an observational-descriptive type case study with references to recent literature on ceramic fracture. The case selected was an unusual incidence of a veneer-to-core fracture of a Procera AllCeram crown after 18 months of service. This unusual case represents a significant concern to general dentists, because the highly dense alumina core is supposed to show comparable fracture resistance to the metal cores of conventional metal-ceramic crowns. Clinical evidence shows that bruxism, manufacturing defects, pre-cementation occlusal adjustment by the laboratory technician or dentis

Refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) toxicity and epidemiology: a review.

This paper provides a review of the relevant literature on refractory ceramic fibers (RCFs), summarizing relevant data and information on the manufacture, processing, applications, potential occupational exposure, toxicology, epidemiology, risk analysis, and risk management. RCFs are amorphous fibers used for high-temperature insulation applications. RCFs are less durable/biopersistent than amphibole asbestos, but more durable/biopersistent than many other synthetic vitreous fibers (SVFs). Moreover, as produced/used, some RCFs are respirable. Toxicology studies with rodents using various expos

Incidence of ceramic liner malseating in Trident acetabular shell.

UNLABELLED: The low wear rates associated with ceramic hip articulations have made them a popular bearing for younger patients. Although few complications have been observed, one report revealed several instances of incomplete seating of the ceramic liner in the metallic shell. We performed a cohort study of consecutive THAs using a ceramic-ceramic bearing. Radiographic analysis showed 50 (7.2%) of the group of 694 hips had evidence of incomplete seating of the liner in the metallic shell. Although we observed no adverse effects at 6 to 12 weeks, we encourage surgeons to carefully assess liner

Synthesis and characterization of nanocrystalline Cr2O3 and ZrO2 ceramic materials.

A novel methodology based on a hybrid approach has been evolved for synthesizing nearly monodisperse nanocrystalline oxides. The approach basically involves precipitation of gelatinous hydroxide in liquid phase hydrolysis and subsequent temperature programmed calcination to obtain nanocrystalline oxide. Cr2O3 and ZrO2 have been synthesized through this route. This paper describes synthesis procedures giving details of temperature windows required for this synthesis. In addition, solid state analytical technique like X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Photoluminescence (PL) have been used to character

A review of ceramic bearing materials in total joint arthroplasty.

Bearings made of ceramics have ultra-low wear properties that make them suitable for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). When compared to cobalt chrome (CoCr)-on-polyethylene (PE) articulations, ceramics offer drastic reductions in bearing wear rates. Lower wear rates result in fewer wear particles produced by the articulating surfaces. In theory, this should reduce the risk of periprosthetic osteolysis and premature implant loosening, thereby contributing to the longevity of total joints. In addition to ceramics, other alternative bearing couples, such as highly cr

[Osteosynthesis in facial bones: silicon nitride ceramic as material].

BACKGROUND: The favorable properties of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic, such as high stability and biocompatibility suggest its biomedical use as an implant material. The aim of this study was to test its suitability for osteosynthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Si3N4 prototype minifixation system was manufactured and implanted for osteosynthesis of artificial frontal bone defects in three minipigs. After 3 months, histological sections, CT and MRI scans were obtained. Finite element modeling (FEM) was used to simulate stresses and strains on Si3N4 miniplates and screws to calculate survival

Mortality of workers occupationally exposed to refractory ceramic fibers.

This study was prompted by refractory ceramic fibers (RCF) inhalation studies at high dose levels in animals that demonstrated positive effects for lung fibrosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Current and former male workers employed between 1952 and 2000 at two RCF manufacturing facilities were followed to investigate a possible excess in mortality. The mortality analytic methods included: (1) standardized mortality ratios comparing this cohort to the general and state populations, and (2) a proportional hazards model that relates risk of death to the lifetime cumulative fiber-months/cc expo

[Tissue interaction with bioglass ceramic implanted in the rabbit cornea].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the biocompatibility and 'healing' of Bioglass Ceramic(BGC) in the cornea. METHODS: BGC dicks (8 mm in diameter, 0.5 mm thick, 20-70 microns pore diameter, 37-62% porosity, 7.8 mm radius of curvature) were implanted in 11 New Zealand albino rabbits after a free-hand intralamellar dissection. The eyes were examined by slit-lamp biomicroscope up to seven months postoperatively. The corneas were removed at seven month (one eye at eight month), then were examined by light microscope. RESULTS: Five of 11 dicks of BGC were extruded. All implant of BGC with 51-62% porosity were

Magnetron sputtered tin coatings on unbiased ceramic substrates.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to study the application of tin oxide coatings on alumina, with a view to developing improved bonding for high-alumina dental ceramics. METHODS: By use of a magnetron sputtering technique, alumina was coated with tin which was subsequently oxidized, and the bond strength of coated surfaces to a resin-based dental cement was measured in tension. Tensile bond strength data were assessed for their degree of skewness and the homogeneity of the residual variances with a view to applying appropriate transformations prior to performing ANOVA with subsequent Tukey

Acute barium intoxication following ingestion of ceramic glaze.

A case of deliberate overdose of barium sulphide in a psychiatric setting is presented, with resulting flaccid paralysis, malignant arrhythmia, respiratory arrest and severe hypokalaemia, but ultimately with complete recovery. The degree of paralysis appears to be related directly to serum barium levels. The value of early haemodialysis, particularly with respiratory paralysis and hypokalaemia, is emphasised.

Fracture of an alumina ceramic head in total hip arthroplasty.

The authors have experienced a fracture in the ceramic head in a total hip arthroplasty in three cases. Two of these were comminuted and the other was a hair-line fissure. A foreign body, perhaps from the operation, existed between the neck of the stem and the head in two cases (one in a comminuted fracture and the other in the fissure fracture). The other case had no foreign body, and, judging from the serial radiographs, the fracture was probably caused by weight-bearing stress. Care must be taken during operation to avoid interposing any foreign body in the modular ceramic head total hip ar

Technique to disguise the metal margin of the metal/ceramic crown.

When it is necessary to place casting margins subgingivally, it is important that they not violate the biologic width. A technique utilizing nonmedicated retraction cord during preparation is described which has several advantages. It results in bloodless, trauma-free tooth preparation and concealment of the metal margin without biologic width impingement or gingival recession. A resilient, unattached gingival margin free of inflammation is critical for the success of this technique. The physical and chemical properties of healthy gingival collagen and ground substance are briefly discussed al

Bioactive glass ceramic in ossicular reconstruction: a preliminary report.

Current techniques for ossicular reconstruction include ossicular autografts and homografts, and plastic and ceramic prostheses. Experimental testing of ceramic materials has led to the development of a nonporous, bioactive form of glass ceramic (Ceravital) for tympanoplastic reconstruction. To determine the clinical usefulness of these implants, Ceravital ossicular reconstructions were evaluated in 37 patients treated at the University of Michigan Medical Center during an 18-month period. Thirty-two patients (86%) with chronic ear disease underwent Ceravital ossicular reconstruction with tymp

Replacement of the proximal humerus with a ceramic prosthesis: a preliminary report.

Insertion of a multicomponent ceramic prosthesis with extracortical fixation to the conically reamed shaft of the humerus was performed in 7 patients after resection of 4 malignant and 3 benign tumors of the proximal humerus. The length of the replacement ranged from 9 to 18 cm. Fixation was secure in all but one patient, who sustained a fracture through the proximal humerus. Subluxation occurred in 3 patients but posed no difficulty, except in one patient who required revision for a dislocation. Functionally, little active motion is achieved, but the implant provides a spacer to permit effici

Bonding mechanism evidence in a ceramic--nonprecious alloy system.

Bonding between porcelain and dental ceramic alloys is thought to be dependent upon the establishment of a continuous electron structure across the ceramic-metal interface (Pask, Proc. Porcelain Enamel Inst.,33,1,1971). Such a structure most likely results from the compatibility of metal ions at the metal surface saturated in an oxide form with the complex oxide structure of the ceramic matrix. Reaction zone compounds are expected to play a prominent role in the strength of the ceramic-metal bonds but thus far none have been detected or identified. The present study was centered on the determi

Ceramic head and liner fractures in total hip arthroplasty.

The ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearing is preferred in total hip arthroplasty (THA) in young patients since it has virtually no wear or peri-prosthetic osteolysis. However, it exposes patients to a rare but serious risk of head or liner fracture. These fractures are multifactorial in origin and involve parameters related to the material, implant geometry, interface characteristics (angle and length of the taper junction), surgical technique (impaction, positioning), joint kinematics, and to a lesser extent, patient factors. According to registries and manufacturers, the head fracture rate has si

One-pot microfluidic fabrication of micro ceramic particles.

In the quest for miniaturization across technical disciplines, microscale ceramic blocks emerge as pivotal components, with performance critically dependent on precise scales and intricate shapes. Sharp-edged ceramic microparticles, applied from micromachining to microelectronics, require innovative fabrication techniques for high-throughput production while maintaining structural complexity and mechanical integrity. This study introduces a "one-pot microfluidic fabrication" system incorporating two device fabrication strategies, "groove & tongue" and sliding assembling, achieving an unprecede

Fracture toughness and fractal analysis of ceramic benchmark materials.

Previous studies have reported various methods of measuring the fracture toughness of brittle ceramics. The purpose of the present research was to use a new method of fractal dimension measurement on benchmark materials (silica glass, Viosil SX, Shin-Etsu, n = 13, and silicon nitride standard reference material, SRM2100, NIST, n = 10), to compare the fracture toughness calculated using different methods, and to study the effect of noise filtering on the fractal dimension and fracture surface roughness. Fracture toughness was determined using surface crack in flexure method according to ASTM C1
