Cervical ribs are more prevalent in stillborn fetuses than in live-born infants and are strongly associated with fetal aneuploidy.

This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of cervical ribs in stillborn fetuses undergoing autopsy at our institution and to search for significant associations with cervical ribs. European studies have reported an increased prevalence of cervical ribs in patients with childhood cancer and in stillborn fetuses. We reviewed data from autopsies performed at Primary Children's Medical Center, Utah, between 2006 and 2009 on 225 stillborns (≥20 weeks) and 93 deceased live-born infants (<1 year). Digital fetal radiographs in anterior-posterior and lateral views had been taken of each sub

[Arrosion bleeding of the brachiocephalic trunc - a late complication after percutaneous dilatative tracheostomy in a patient with a cervical rib abnormality].

BACKGROUND: In the last years percutaneous dilatative tracheostomy was increasingly established in many intensive care units, mostly performed by the anesthesiologists. This method becomes problematic, when it is used in patients requiring long time intubation. It must always be kept in mind that in the course of further rehabilitation the patients may be treated by persons, who are not familiar with the altered anatomy of the upper airways. This bears the risk for severy complications, like bleeding from major vessels. CASE REPORT: Letal arrosion bleeding of the brachiocephalic trunc was obs

Cervical 1-2 Posterior Instrumented Fusion Utilizing Computer-Assisted Navigation With Harvest of Rib Strut Autograft: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Nonunion of a type II odontoid fracture after the placement of an anterior odontoid screw can occur despite careful patient selection. Countervailing factors to successful fusion include the vascular watershed zone between the odontoid process and body of C2 as well as the relatively low surface area available for fusion. Patient-specific factors include osteoporosis, advanced age, and poor fracture fragment apposition. Cervical 1-2 posterior instrumented fusion is indicated for symptomatic nonunion. The technique leverages the larger posterolateral surface area for fusion and does not rely on

Diagnostic Accuracy and Clinical Utility of Adson's Test in Detecting Subclavian Artery Compression Associated With Cervical Ribs: A Systematic Review.

Thoracic outlet syndrome results from neurovascular compression at the thoracic outlet, with the vascular subtype, often linked to cervical ribs leading to subclavian artery stenosis, aneurysm, or thromboembolism. Adson's test is a long-standing provocative maneuver used for diagnosis, but its accuracy has been questioned. This systematic review, conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library up to August 2025. Studies were included if they involved more than 20 human participants, assessed Adson's test against imaging or surgical confi

An acutely ischaemic hand in a young adult due to subclavian artery aneurysm (SAA) caused by a cervical rib: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: True subclavian artery aneurysms are relatively rare lesions. Thoracic outlet compression is responsible for 75% of aneurysms. They are formed as a result of compression by, for example a cervical rib. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of subclavian artery aneurysm secondary to a cervical rib in a 25-year-old young Asian adult, who presented with an acutely ischaemic upper limb. A Computed Tomography angiogram revealed a right sided cervical rib and sacular aneurysm in the mid-portion of the subclavian artery. CONCLUSION: Although it is a rare condition, it is important to b

Syndrome of ichthyosis congenita, neurosensory deafness, oligophrenia, dental aplasia, brachydactyly, clinodactyly, accessory cervical ribs and carcinoma of the thyroid.

We report the case of a 15-year-old girl with a uneventful family history. Her skin condition was clinically, histologically and ultrastructurally compatible with the diagnosis of ichthyosis congenita. She suffered from neurosensory deafness and oligophrenia. Further findings included dental aplasia, brachydactyly, clinodactyly and accessory cervical ribs. At the age of 14, a thyroid carcinoma was diagnosed. Therapy with a retinoid derivative (Ro 10-9359) resulted in a marked improvement of the ichthyosis. We assume a genetic syndrome with autosomal-recessive inheritance.

Hydrodissection of the Eighth Cervical Nerve Root for Scapular Girdle Pain Associated With Nonunion of the First Rib Stress Fracture: A Case Report.

The first rib stress fracture is a rare overuse injury, with nonunion posing challenges to athletic performance. We report an 18-year-old international-level gymnast diagnosed with the nonunion of the first rib stress fracture, experiencing pain extending to the medial scapular area. Traditional treatments provided no relief, with tests suggesting C8 nerve root involvement. This study introduces a novel approach targeting the C8 nerve root using hydrodissection, which alleviates the pain. Post-procedure, the patient resumed competition without recurrence of pain after a year. This case suggest

Recurrent arterial and new-onset neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome as a complication after previously inadequately excised first and cervical ribs.

Thoracic outlet syndrome commonly presents with the neurogenic subtype and can be caused in rare circumstances by an anatomic abnormality such as a cervical rib, for which surgical excision is the mainstay of management. An inadequately excised first or cervical rib can result in recurrent symptoms. We have reported the case of a 30-year-old woman who had presented with symptoms of right recurrent arterial and neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. She underwent repeat right-sided first rib and cervical rib resection with brachial plexus neural lysis and right carotid-axillary bypass via a combi

Management of cervical ribs causing neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome: a ten year experience in the neurosurgery unit, Tikur Anbessa Hospital.

Eighteen cases of cervical Ribs causing numbness, paraesthesia and wasting of hand muscles were seen during the years 1990 to 1999 in neurosurgery unit of Tikur Anbessa, a central, referral teaching hospital. There were thirteen cases of unilateral, and 5 bilateral brachialgic pains M:F = 1:2 with ages range from 15-50 yrs (mean age 32 +/- 4.8 yrs); though it is 3 times common in women specially those with neurologic symptoms. 5 cases didn't have any cervical ribs. All had respective cervical rib resections and scalenotomy done. Paraesthesia and pain were relieved in about 90% of the cases. Ce

A case of cervical spinal mass with cord compression and rib bone metastasis from presumably burned-out seminomatous testicular germ cell tumor.

Most germ cell tumors are located in the gonads however there are instances where these tumors are located elsewhere in which are termed extragonadal germ cell tumors. When primary lesion of the testicular tumor has regressed, the term "burned-out testicular tumor" has been proposed. We herein report the first case of burned-out seminoma of the testis presenting as a cervical spinal mass causing cord compression with bone metastasis.

Combined extravasal compression of the right subclavian artery caused by stellate ganglion schwannoma and additional rudimentary cervical rib. Clinical case and literature review.

Unlike widespread and well-studied atherosclerosis of supra-aortic arteries, non-atherosclerotic vascular diseases are less common. Of these, one of the most unusual is extravasal compression by additional structures between scalene muscles. Close topographic and anatomical connections of scalene muscles, vertebral and subclavian arteries, brachial plexus and stellate ganglion can lead to complex syndrome including impaired blood supply to the arm, brachial plexus compression and vertebrobasilar circulatory disorders. The main treatment method for supraclavicular compression syndromes is surge

Cervical rib in a young individual from the late medieval cemetery of Corfinio (12th-13th century CE, Italy): a case report and review of the literature.

Cervical ribs constitute the most important variants among ribs, particularly because of their proximity to the brachial plexus nerve network and subclavian artery. Thus, cervical ribs may exert excessive pressure upon these structures, producing a variety of symptoms that may be considered as a neuro-vascular complex. Cervical ribs are not uncommon in the catalogue of anatomic abnormalities in modern medicine, but few cases have been reported from historic skeletal material. We conducted a review with the existent articles published in palaeopathological literature, the historical background

Variations in the Number of Vertebrae, Prevalence of Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebra and Prevalence of Cervical Rib Among Surgical Patients With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: An Analysis of 998 Radiographs.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective Study. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate variation in the number of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, the prevalence of lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV) and the prevalence of cervical ribs among surgical patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Due to variation in the number of thoracic or lumbar vertebrae, inaccurate identification of vertebral levels has been found to be a contributory factor to wrong-level surgery. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on AIS patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion.
