Trends in child sexual abuse cases referred for forensic examination in Southern Denmark from 2000 to 2011 - Did the 'Tønder-case' have an impact?

In 2005 a serious case of child sexual abuse from the region of Southern Denmark was revealed to the Danish public. The case became known as the 'Tønder-case'. It was the first in a series of 4-5 serious cases of child maltreatment in Denmark, cases which spurred heavy public debate. In this study all the cases of child sexual abuse referred for forensic examination in a 12 year period, a total of 368 cases, were systematically evaluated. In order to identify any trends that could be correlated to an impact of the 'Tønder-case', cases from 2000 to 2002 and cases from 2009 to 2011 underwent an

Relationship between reason for placement and medical findings among children in foster care.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reasons for placement of children in foster care, the prevalence of medical findings during initial placement, and the relationship between reason for placement and medical findings. The association between placement reasons and parental substance abuse also was explored. METHODS: Population-based analysis of medical records of 749 children examined at the Child Protection Center in San Francisco from October 1, 1991, to December 31, 1992. Health evaluations consisted of a clearance examination of children during entry into foster care and a comprehensive examinati

Structural validity and internal consistency of the Strengths and Stressors in Parenting (SSF) Questionnaire in parents of children with developmental disabilities.

The current study investigated the structural validity and internal consistency of the Strengths and Stressors (SSF) questionnaire. The SSF is used in Swedish habilitation services to measure the positive and negative consequences that the fostering of a child with a developmental disability can have on family functioning in six domains: parent's feelings and attitudes, social life, family finances, relationship to the other parent, siblings, and professional support. The proposed six-factor model was tested with confirmatory factor analysis with data collected from 291 parents of children wit

Critique of the Vatican's Role in Recent Child Protection Practice: A Brief Report.

The current report aims to clarify the practices and implicit intentions of the Holy See in addressing child sexual abuse (CSA) by clerics in the twenty-first century. Church investigation reports, United Nations reports, press coverage, and academic literature were explored to understand the relationship between Church intention and practice. Various types of literature highlight the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) as an organization that is self-referential and self-defensive, with the implicit aim of protecting the reputation of RCC at the expense of children. Organizational responses are seen

Change in Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) scores over time among children and youth in out-of-home care: A latent growth curve analysis.

BACKGROUND: Children and youth in out-of-home care (OOHC) have significant behavioral health needs and may not receive relevant treatment. While the literature has urged implementation of standardized assessment of behavioral health needs, and specifically mental, emotional and social wellbeing, for these children and youth, little is known about the extent to which these needs improve over time. OBJECTIVE: The study purpose was to examine whether improvement in functioning was detected over time based on Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) scores, and how scores improved over tim

Types and Nature of Parental Support for Overweight Students to Cope With Weight-Related Teasing.

BACKGROUND: Parental support can protect adolescents from various forms of bullying. There is a lack of in-depth information about what social support parents provide to overweight adolescents when they are teased at school. In this study, we took an initial step to address this gap in the literature by describing the types and nature of support that parents provided to their overweight child when they were teased. METHODS: A conversational style semistructured interview/prompts and probes were conducted with 28 volunteering parents. Inductive content analysis was used to analyze the data. Da

Conceptualizing housing careers for vulnerable youth: implications for research and policy.

Research on the experiences of youth leaving foster care as they enter adulthood has identified their risk for homelessness and housing instability. Although this finding has been consistent, it has not received sufficient empirical or conceptual attention. In this article, we (a) review the recent findings on housing outcomes for former foster youth; (b) identify relevant theoretical frameworks to examine housing outcomes for these youth, with specific attention to the concept of housing career; (c) describe existing policy; and (d) propose further strategies for understanding and, therefore,

Early Parent-Child Relationship in the Shadow of War-Related Trauma: A Systematic Review.

War-related trauma has detrimental effects on millions of individuals worldwide, including infants, toddlers, and their parents. Among various adverse outcomes, this trauma may significantly disrupt the essential sense of security crucial for fostering a healthy early parent-child relationship. Yet, research on the effects of war-related trauma on parent-child relationships remains limited. This study aimed to bridge this gap by synthesizing evidence from empirical studies focused on war-related trauma and early parent-child relationship outcomes from 0 to 3 years. Studies were identified by s

The diagnosis and care of transsexual children and adolescents: a pediatric endocrinologists' perspective.

The normally developed child whose gender identity and anatomic sex disagree is referred to as a transgendered child, or as used subsequently in this text, a transsexual. The ramifications of this disagreement include a high risk of psychiatric conflict and maladjustment, for both the individuals themselves and their families. Despite the efforts of researchers to systematically study this group of children, many fundamental questions remain. In many respects, those lingering questions are shared by patients with physical intersex who have been cared for by pediatric endocrinologists. In inter

Parenting a Gender Diverse Child: Parent Experiences of a Child Coming Out.

PURPOSE: A young person coming out as gender diverse-having a gender identity that differs from sex assigned at birth-can be a significant moment of change for the entire family. This qualitative study explored parents' experiences of their child coming out as gender diverse. METHODS: Twenty-five parents of gender diverse youth, ages 6-20 years, from the United States, submitted videos and were interviewed regarding their experiences of their child coming out. Data collection ceased when thematic saturation was achieved. Videos and interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the rigorous a

An Expert-Derived Data-Driven Approach to Identifying Medicaid Children at Risk of Out-of-Home Placement: Development, Application, and Data-Sharing Considerations.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-home placement (OOHP) through child welfare, residential substance treatment, or extended inpatient care has life-altering impacts on child health and generates an outsized proportion of pediatric Medicaid costs. Early risk identification may prevent OOHP but is challenged by the difficulty of navigating state and federal data sharing regulations and multiple disconnected data systems. Identifying ways to streamline and simplify this process are critical to OOHP prevention. OBJECTIVES: To describe the development and implementation of an expert-derived data-driven algorithm

Adoption or Placement in Foster Care and Catch-up in Linear Growth and Development: A Meta-Analysis of Individual Participant Data.

The ability of children to recover from linear growth retardation, often referred to as catch-up growth, has intrigued researchers for many decades. Whether adoption from a low-income to a high-income setting, which provides a comprehensive improvement in the conditions that cause children to not grow well, leads to catch-up growth is unknown. We estimated the association of adoption (or placement in foster care) with catch-up in linear growth and child development before 5 y of age. We conducted a 2-stage meta-analysis using individual participant data for linear growth. We obtained study-spe

Trauma-Informed Care for Youth in Foster Care.

For decades, evidence has shown an undeniable connection between childhood trauma and chronic adverse reactions across the lifespan (Bilchik & Nash, 2008; Perry, 2001; Perry, 2006). Childhood traumatic experiences are associated with serious and persistent, long-term physical, psychological, and substance abuse issues. In addition to adverse effects on physical health, research indicates that early childhood trauma has particularly adverse effects on adolescent self-esteem, coping skills, school performance, self-regulation, critical thinking, self-motivation, and the ability to build healthy

Maternal substance use and child protection: a rapid evidence assessment of factors associated with loss of child care.

This article reviews the literature on the factors associated with mothers who use substances losing care of their children. A rapid evidence assessment was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses. Medline and PsycINFO databases were searched to identify primary research studies published in English during January 2000-September 2016. Studies were included if they presented individual, formal support (e.g., receiving substance use treatment) or informal support (e.g., receiving social and family support) factors associated with mother

Systematic review of organisation-wide, trauma-informed care models in out-of-home care (OoHC) settings.

Trauma in early childhood has been shown to adversely affect children's social, emotional, and physical development. Children living in out-of-home care (OoHC) have better outcomes when care providers are present for children, physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Unfortunately, the high turnover of out-of-home carers, due to vicarious trauma (frequently resulting in burnout and exhaustion) can result in a child's trauma being re-enacted during their placement in OoHC. Organisation-wide therapeutic care models (encompassing the whole organisation, from the CEO to all workers including
