[Maternal age and psychological health of the child. Study of a population in consultation].

The data of all first born or only children seen at the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at a university hospital from 1978-84 were analyzed according to maternal age at birth of the patient. Mixed emotional and conduct disorder as well as hyperkinetic syndromes are overrepresented in the youngest maternal age group (less than or equal to 17 at delivery). The difference to other groups remains significant for the former diagnosis even after matching for age, sex, socioeconomic status and whether or not the natural parents lived together at the time of presentation. The influence of aflatoxins on child health in the tropics with particular reference to kwashiorkor.

Aflatoxins are common environmental hazards in all the underdeveloped countries of the tropics where they commonly contaminate food. They are toxic to most species of animals and are among the most powerful carcinogenic agents known. The liver is the principal target for toxicity. Metabolic derangements caused by aflatoxins include depression of protein and enzyme synthesis, disorder of lipid metabolism and immunological suppression. The aetiology and pathogenesis of kwashiorkor remains somewhat obscure. Similarities in the geographical and climatic prevalence of kwashiorkor and aflatoxins and

Critical windows: timing of child maltreatment exposure and adult mental health.

BACKGROUND: Despite being recognized as the leading risk factor for mental disorders, child maltreatment (CM) remains insufficiently understood regarding type and timing of exposure. This study examines which developmental periods of exposure to CM subtypes are most strongly associated with adult mental disorders in women and men. METHODS: Data from a German survey study from 2021 was used. The sample included N = 1,278 women [51.8%] (Mage = 50.3; SD = 17.6) and N = 1,188 men [48.2%] (Mage = 51.1; SD = 17.6). CM was assessed using the ISPCAN Child Abuse Screening Tools Retrospective version q

Preimplantation genetic testing and child health: a national register-based study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) associated with adverse perinatal outcome and early childhood health? SUMMARY ANSWER: Children born after PGT had comparable perinatal outcomes to children born after IVF/ICSI and comparable findings regarding early childhood health. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: PGT is offered to couples affected by monogenic disorders (PGT-M) or inherited chromosomal aberrations (PGT-SR), limiting the risk of transferring the disorder to the offspring. PGT, an invasive technique, requires genetic analysis of one or up to ten cells from the embryo and is com

SCAN for Abuse: Electronic Health Record-Based Universal Child Abuse Screening.

BACKGROUND: Identification of physical abuse at the point of care without a systematic approach remains inherently subjective and prone to judgement error. This study examines the implementation of an electronic health record (EHR)-based universal child injury screen (CIS) to improve detection rates of child abuse. METHODS: CIS was implemented in the EHR admission documentation for all patients age 5 or younger at a single medical center, with the following questions. 1) "Is this patient an injured/trauma patient?" 2) "If this is a trauma/injured patient, where did the injury occur?" A "Yes"

Careful: An administrative child welfare and electronic health records linked dataset.

Between 2012 and 2017, N = 2814 youth between the ages of 4 and 20 were in child protective services (CPS) custody in Hamilton County, Ohio, and placed in out-of-home care. Child welfare administrative records were extracted and linked to electronic health records for all encounters at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, with n = 2787 (99.1%) of records successfully linked prior to de-identifying the data for research purposes. Child welfare administrative data fields in the dataset include demographics, dates of entry into and exit from protective custody and out-of-home care, reas

Child Sexual Abuse of Elite Athletes: Prevalence, Perceptions, and Mental Health.

Despite a series of high-profile media reports of sexual abuse in sport over the past few years, little research has been done to explore the scope of the problem in the United States. The current article reports on prevalence of child sexual assault in elite athletes in the United States. Using a retrospective web survey, adults answered questions on their experiences in sport. Of the 473 elite athletes surveyed, 3.8% (n = 18) reported being sexual assaulted as a minor in the sporting context. Of those reporting assault, most (61%) reported being abused by an adult authority figure (usually a

State of child health: acute rheumatic fever in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Rheumatic fever is a well-recognised public health problem in Aotearoa New Zealand that is potentially preventable by addressing the social and environmental determinants of health and ensuring equitable access to primary healthcare services. We present data on the hospitalisations of children aged 0-14 years for acute rheumatic fever (ARF) during the period 2000-2020, and the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic to May 2021. Persistent inequity by ethnicity and by socioeconomic deprivation was observed, particularly for Pacific children, for Māori children, and for children living in the mos

Understanding Mechanisms Driving Family Homeless Shelter Use and Child Mental Health.

Homeless shelters throughout the U.S. are overcrowded and under-resourced. Families with children face substantial barriers to timely, successful shelter exit, and prolonged shelter stays threaten child mental health. This community-based system dynamics study explored barriers to timely, successful shelter exit and feedback mechanisms driving length of stay and child mental health risk. Group model building - a participatory systems science tool - and key informant interviews were conducted with clients (N = 37) and staff (N = 6) in three family homeless shelters in a Midwestern region. Quali

Ongoing Pediatric Health Care for the Child Who Has Been Maltreated.

Pediatricians provide continuous medical care and anticipatory guidance for children who have been reported to state child protection agencies, including tribal child protection agencies, because of suspected child maltreatment. Because families may continue their relationships with their pediatricians after these reports, these primary care providers are in a unique position to recognize and manage the physical, developmental, academic, and emotional consequences of maltreatment and exposure to childhood adversity. Substantial information is available to optimize follow-up medical care of mal

Intergenerational Associations of Parent Adverse Childhood Experiences and Child Health Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) robustly predict future morbidity and mortality. Researchers are just beginning to investigate intergenerational effects. We hypothesize there are intergenerational associations between parent ACE exposure and worse child health, health behaviors, and health care access and use. METHODS: We linked data from 2 population-based cross-sectional telephone surveys in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that were used to ask parents about their past exposure to ACEs and their child's health, respectively. Participants were 350 parent-child dyads. Logistic re

Public health actions to mitigate long-term consequences of child maltreatment.

Child maltreatment (CM) is highly prevalent and one of the most injurious conditions that children may experience. Because it is often-clandestine, it is difficult to assure that existing prevention and treatment mechanisms reach those in need. CM's consequences may take a long time to be recognized and expressed. We discuss the need to increase public health actions when the person reaches adulthood to mitigate the consequences of CM. We propose three intervention targets to alleviate CM-related difficulties in adults: emotion regulation, social functioning, and self-concept. By enhancing awa

Prenatal maternal mood patterns predict child temperament and adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: This study quantifies the dynamics of maternal mood focusing on unpredictability, and to assess if greater unpredictability of prenatal maternal mood predicts child temperament and internalizing symptoms through early adolescence. METHODS: The association between prenatal mood predictability and child internalizing symptoms were assessed in two longitudinal cohorts (N's = 227 and 180). Maternal mood was assessed repeatedly during pregnancy as early as 15 weeks' gestation. Predictability of maternal mood was calculated by applying Shannon's entropy to the distribution of responses
