Follow-up between 6 and 24 months after discharge from treatment for severe acute malnutrition in children aged 6-59 months: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a major global health problem affecting some 16.9 million children under five. Little is known about what happens to children 6-24 months post-discharge as this window often falls through the gap between studies on SFPs and those focusing on longer-term effects. METHODS: A protocol was registered on PROSPERO (PROSPERO 2017:CRD42017065650). Embase, Global Health and MEDLINE In-Process and Non-Indexed Citations were systematically searched with terms related to SAM, nutritional intervention and follow-up between June and August 2017. Studies were s

Teratology Public Affairs Committee position paper: maternal obesity and pregnancy.

Compared to normal-weight women, obese women have an increased risk of infertility and pregnancy complications. The most consistently described pregnancy complications are hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes mellitus, thromboembolic events, and cesarean section. Fetal and neonatal complications may include congenital malformations, macrosomia, and shoulder dystocia. The literature suggests that women with a body mass index (BMI) >or=30 have approximately double the risk of having a child with a neural tube defect (NTD) compared to normal-weight women, and the increased risk associated

A new syndrome of refractory sideroblastic anemia with vacuolization of marrow precursors and exocrine pancreatic dysfunction.

In the past decade, we have studied four unrelated children with what we believe is a previously unreported disorder affecting the bone marrow and exocrine pancreas. During infancy these patients had the onset of severe, transfusion-dependent, macrocytic anemia plus a variable degree of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Their bone marrows had normal cellularity but were characterized by remarkable vacuolization of erythroid and myeloid precursors, hemosiderosis, and ringed sideroblasts. The vacuoles probably represented manifestations of cellular degeneration and death. In two patients, in vit

Effects of therapy on nutritional status of the pediatric cancer patient.

Children with cancer are at high risk for major nutrition problems both from the tumor itself and from the treatment administered. Overt malnutrition is seen in as many as 17% of children with newly diagnosed localized tumors and 37% of those with metastatic disease. Weight loss in children with cancer is directly correlated with a poor nutritional status at the time of diagnosis and with a low serum albumin. Massive surgical resections are a common source of nutritional problems and are usually not indicated as primary therapy in children with cancer. Both radiotherapy and chemotherapy are as

Refeeding problems in a severe anorexia nervosa case.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder of puberty or adolescence. It is characterized by self-induced weight loss; various psychological disturbances including distorted body image, fear of obesity, active pursuit of thinness and loss of recognition of a number of body enteroreceptive sensations; and secondary physiological abnormalities. The treatment of AN includes individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and nutritional rehabilitation. Hospital treatment is required when the patient's medical condition is in danger due to hypovolemia or hypotension. If cardiac arrhythmias occur withou

An examination of child outcomes and predictors of severity when prenatal alcohol exposure is frequent and heavy.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) results in a range of adverse outcomes in children. This study examines predictive factors relating to child outcomes from pregnancies characterized by PAE. METHODS: Data originated from seven cross-sectional, population-based, in-school studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in South Africa. Data analysis was limited to mothers who reported consuming five or more drinks per drinking day (DDD) and three or more drinking days per week (DDW) during two or more trimesters of pregnancy. RESULTS: Of 225 mother/child dyads, 53.3% of children

Philippines Case Study: Government Policies on Nutrition Education.

Government policies at the national and local levels are central to the promotion, protection, and implementation of sound food and nutrition concepts in the Philippines. According to the 2015 national nutrition survey, persistent malnutrition problems, such as protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies (anemia, vitamin A deficiency, and iodine-deficiency disorders), continue to afflict a major proportion of Filipinos. In the Philippines, nutrition education and promotion date back as early as 1900 with the conduct of educational campaigns directed towards the prevention and co

Subclinical vitamin A deficiency: a potentially unrecognized problem in the United States.

Vitamin A deficiency in its subclinical form is a world health problem in young children. The problem is probably under recognized in the United States and other developed countries who do not normally consider their citizens to be malnourished. Lack of a simple screening test to measure subclinical deficiency adds to this problem. Consequently, focused dietary assessment of vitamin A intake by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) is a necessary component of health care maintenance, especially for toddlers and preschool age children. Dietary counseling and vitamin supplementation for high risk

Nutritional status of infants and young children in India across three decades: Analysis of five national family health surveys.

BACKGROUND: Three indicators of early childhood undernutrition and associated factors are evaluated among under-5 children in five National Family Health Surveys in India spanning 1992 to 2021. METHODS: Data for 533,495 children under 5 years of age (U-5) were analysed in the context of three commonly used indicators of early childhood undernutrition - wasting, stunting and underweight. In addition to descriptive and inferential statistics, binary logistic regression was used to estimate the effects of specific explanatory factors on the three indicators using adjusted odds ratios. RESULTS:

Burden of undernutrition among under-five Bengali children and its determinants: Findings from Demographic and Health Surveys of Bangladesh and India.

BACKGROUND: Globally, undernutrition is the leading cause of mortality among under-five children. Bangladesh and India were in the top ten countries in the world for under-five mortality. The aim of the study was to investigate the nutritional status of Bengali under-five children. METHODS: Data on 25938 under-five children were retrieved from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2017-18 (BDHS) and the National Family Health Survey of India 2015-16 (NFHS-4). Stunting, wasting, underweight and thinness were considered to understand the nutritional status of under-five children. Binary

Large-scale food fortification has great potential to improve child health and nutrition.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Undernutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies, continues to plague children across the world, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The situation has worsened alongside the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic because of major systemic disruptions to food supply, healthcare, and employment. Large-scale food fortification (LSFF) is a potential strategy for improving micronutrient intakes through the addition of vitamins and minerals to staple foods and improving the nutritional status of populations at large. RECENT FINDINGS: Current evidence unquestionably supports

The effects of household food production strategies on the health and nutrition outcomes of women and young children: a systematic review.

The objective of this review is to systematically examine and summarise the effects of agricultural interventions to increase household food production on the nutrition and health outcomes of women and young children and provide recommendations for future research and programming. Data from all studies meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria were abstracted into a standardised form. The quality of the evidence was assessed and graded using a modified version of the Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group adaptation of the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation techni

Gastrointestinal and nutritional problems occur frequently throughout life in girls and women with Rett syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a nationwide survey to determine the prevalence of common gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders in Rett syndrome (RTT) based on parental reporting and related the occurrence of these problems to age and methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene status. METHODS: We designed a questionnaire that probed symptoms, diagnoses, diagnostic tests, and treatment interventions related to gastrointestinal and nutritional problems in RTT. The International Rett Syndrome Foundation distributed the questionnaire to 1666 family-based members and forwarded their responses for our

[Pilot study on nutritional and eating disorders in children and mood disorders: comorbidity or prodromal traits?].

INTRODUCTION: Both children affected by nutritional and eating disorders (ED) and adults with bipolar disorder (BD) display symptoms of deficient emotional self-regulation, which can present in different forms. If we observe the clinical and developmental histories of individuals affected by EDs and BD, based on a cognitive systemic post-rationalist approach, we can hypothesise a continuum between the two disorders. The aim of this pilot study is to support the hypothesis - from an explanatory rather than a non-descriptive approach - that EDs and BD are the possible result of issues tied to bi

Possible relevance of abnormal fatty acid metabolism in undernutrition: the relationship between oleic acid and growth.

Energy, protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals are all necessary for normal growth and development of children. In undernutrition, there is evidence for abnormal fatty acid metabolism. High levels of oleic acid and low levels of docosahexaenoic acid in plasma phosphatidylcholine have been associated with weight-for-age Z-score shifts to the left (increased prevalence of underweight) and vice versa (reduced prevalence of underweight). An alternative hypothesis is proposed, which describes a possible physiological mechanism whereby omega3 fatty acids contribute to growth. High blo
