Beyond words: children with disabilities' conceptualization of community participation in resource-constrained urban settings.

PURPOSE: Participation perspectives of children with disabilities remain underexplored despite calls for their inclusion. Hence, this study explores how Filipino children with disabilities aged 9-16 years conceptualize participation in community-based rehabilitation (CBR) programs in low-resource communities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A combined grounded theory and participatory research engaged eight children with varying disabilities through a mosaic approach of storytelling, drawing, photo-elicitation, and interviews across 24 online sessions. Inductive analysis using NVivo software employed …

Understanding Physical Activity Demands and Reported Perceptions of Fatigue in Children with Developmental Disabilities.

Children with developmental disabilities are less physically active and at increased risk for chronic conditions that physical activity might ameliorate. This study examined the relationships between the impact of physical activity (e.g., muscles burning, body tiredness), physical activity time and fatigue in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Down Syndrome (DS) in comparison to typically developing (TD) children. A convenience sample of children and parents was enrolled. All children were between 4 and 10 years, ambulatory, medically stable, not taking sleep-aid medications and were either

Predictors of foundational reading competence in speaking and non-speaking children with intellectual disabilities.

\Phonological awareness, knowledge of grapheme-phoneme correspondences, working memory, and broader linguistic factors are well-established predictors of the acquisition of foundational reading skills in students with and without intellectual disabilities. However, empirical evidence remains limited regarding the specific factors that contribute to literacy learning difficulties in children with intellectual disabilities who rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The present study aimed to examine predictors of basic reading abilities in children with intellectual disabiliti

A preliminary study of a Math digital based intervention in children with intellectual disabilities.

While many technological applications are available, few studies address Math intervention for children with intellectual disabilities via technology and through treatment packages that comprise several methods and materials. Therefore, we developed a digitally based intervention, addressed to children with intellectual disabilities, that was multicomponent and with multiple instructive methods and resources. In parallel, we developed a classic intervention, also multicomponent and with multiple instructive methods and resources. The current paper investigates the efficacy of a Math interventi

The Home Literacy Environment and Reading Development of Children With and Without Learning Disabilities.

Home literacy environment (HLE) refers to children's exposure to and engagement in reading-related activities in the home. Although HLE is known to be related to successful early reading achievement in general, less is known about this relation for students with learning disabilities (LDs). We investigated the relation between HLE and reading achievement using a sample of 2090 children from the ECLS-K:2011 dataset, half of whom were identified as students with LDs and half serving as controls. Latent growth curve modeling was used to examine growth in reading from kindergarten (age 5) through

Trauma-informed practice for children and young people with intellectual disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: There is growing consensus that children and young people (CYP) with an intellectual disability are more likely to experience trauma than those in the general population, which can exacerbate their vulnerabilities and developmental challenges. Trauma-informed practices (TIPs) have been used to support those who have experienced trauma, but we need to know more about the implementation of TIPs with this population. AIM: The study aimed to synthesize research investigating TIPs for CYP with intellectual disabilities. The review examined what TIPs, policies and models have been imple

Understanding posterior drooling in children and young people with neurodevelopmental disabilities: a parental perspective.

BACKGROUND: Saliva control problems in children and young people with neurodevelopmental disabilities are classified as anterior drooling (i.e. loss of saliva from the mouth) and posterior drooling (i.e. saliva spillage into the oropharynx). Posterior drooling poses serious health risks, but is often missed or misinterpreted. This study explored how parents perceive its symptoms and impact on daily life. METHODS: Semi-structured focus group discussions were conducted with parents of children with posterior drooling, directed toward observable signs and impact on children as well as family. Se

Characteristics of Inclusive Web-Based Leisure Activities for Children With Disabilities: Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: The participation of children with disabilities in leisure activities is a key determinant of their physical and mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic has limited participation in leisure activities for all children, particularly those with disabilities. As a result, children with disabilities may be less active while feeling more isolated and stressed. Web-based communities and activities have become increasingly important. Understanding how web-based activities include or exclude children with disabilities can contribute to the development of inclusive communities that may support…

Unintentional injuries among children with developmental disabilities are a public health challenge in China.

Child injury is a significant global health issue that contributes to both morbidity and mortality in children. Children with developmental disabilities are at a high risk for injuries due to a combination of environmental barriers and health conditions. However, little research has assessed the prevalence of injuries among this population in China. Using administrative data from a micro insurance programme for children with developmental disabilities (such as autism, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome) under the age of 19, we estimated the risk of unintentional injuries

Early numeracy profiles in young children with intellectual disabilities: The role of cognitive functions.

Exploring individual differences and looking beyond averaged parameters of early numeracy in young children with mild intellectual disabilities has become an area of interest to many researchers worldwide. This study aimed to identify the different profiles of early numeracy skills in young children with mild intellectual disabilities. For this purpose, we assessed early numeracy through Utrecht early numeracy test and learning aptitude through Detroit Test, in a sample of 135 children diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. The mean of their mental age was 5:09 (years:months). Two-step clus

Brief Report: Risk Variants Could Inform Early Neurodevelopmental Outcome in Children with Developmental Disabilities.

The aim of this study was to examine genetic variations underlying the early neurodevelopmental outcome of developmental disabilities (DDs). The study cohort consisted of 191 children with DDs. Diagnosis was assessed at baseline and at the index age (72-84 months). Exome sequencing was conducted and putative risk variants were identified. According to the diagnostic improvement, children were categorized into the improvement group (n = 19) and the non-improvement group (n = 172). Compared to the non-improvement group, the improvement group had lower number of risk variants in known DD genes an

Fundamental Motor Skill Delays in Preschool Children With Disabilities: 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey.

Delays in fundamental motor skill (FMS) competency have been observed in a variety of children with disabilities. However, evidence of FMS delays is largely limited to small, geographically specific, limitedly diverse, and non-representative samples. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between FMS competency and reported disability status among pre-school children, ages 3-5 years, using the 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey (NYFS). In total, 329 preschool children (49% female; 4.00 ± 0.04 years of age) from the 2012 NYFS completed the Test of Gross Motor Development-2, in…
