The mammalian pineal gland contains several neurotransmitters and receptors for amino acids, biogenic amines, and peptides. Some of these, such as D1 and D2 dopamine receptors, have been previously identified and characterized in the bovine pineal gland by our group. A 57-year-old man developed a ciliary body mass, clinically diagnosed as malignant melanoma of the ciliary body, that produced a cataract in the right eye. Treatment was cataract surgery with sclerouvectomy performed simultaneously. Pathohistologic examination revealed an acquired adenoma of the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium. The clinicopathologic features and treatment of this tumor are discussed.

PURPOSE: To study the chloride and sodium ion transports across the bovine ciliary body/epithelium (CBE) by a modified Ussing-Zerahn type chamber.
METHODS: Isolated bovine CBE preparations were mounted in a modified Ussing-type chamber and the transepithelial electrical parameters were monitored. The inward (stroma to aqueous) and outward (aqueous to stroma) fluxes of 36[Cl] chloride and 22[Na] sodium ions across the CBE were measured under short-circuited conditions. A malignant ciliary body melanoma was treated by proton-beam irradiation. Ring-shaped recurrence with extraocular extension appeared thirty-six months later and required enucleation. Histologic study revealed a predominant epithelioid cell type tumor, flattened in previously treated area. Proton-beam irradiation efficiency depends on clinical evaluation, which remains questioned in ciliary body locations where circumferential extension could be misevaluated.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to use ultrasound biomicroscopy to identify and quantity changes in anterior segment parameters after scleral buckling procedures.

We report the first case of bilateral malignant ciliary body medulloepithelioma (CBME) in an adult, with comprehensive histopathological and genomic analyses. The right eye harbored a malignant teratoid CBME with sarcomatous elements, while the left eye showed a non-teratoid variant. Whole-exome sequencing revealed shared chromosomal losses and additional aberrations in the teratoid tumor. No pathogenic germline mutations were identified. These findings suggest a potential correlation between histological subtype and genomic complexity in CBME.
