Maternal origin matters: Country of birth as a risk factor for obstetric anal sphincter injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS) are severe complications to vaginal births with potential long-term consequences. Maternal origin has been proposed to affect the overall risk, but the association and underlying explanation are uncertain. The objective was to assess the association between maternal country of birth and OASIS. METHODS: A Swedish nationwide cohort study including singleton term vaginal births during 2005-2016. Data were extracted from the Swedish Medical Birth Registry and Statistics Sweden. Modified Poisson regression analyses were performed to obtain crude

Comparison and clinical analysis of antibiotics and endoscopic injection for vesicoureteral reflux in children.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the outcome of pediatric patients with primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and compared of the treatments between continued antibiotic prophylaxis (CAP) and endoscopic injection. METHODS: The clinical data of children diagnosed with primary vesicoureteral reflux from March 2015 to June 2020 who were treated with antibiotics or endoscopic injection were reviewed. Antibiotic was the first-chosen treatment after the diagnosis of VUR in children. Endoscopic treatment consisted of injection of dextran hyaluronic acid copolymer (DX/HA) into the ureteral opening under d

Factors Associated with HBsAg Seropositivity among Pregnant Women Receiving Antenatal Care at 10 Community Health Centers in Freetown, Sierra Leone: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Hepatitis B (HBV) is a major public health threat in Sierra Leone. Pregnant women are disproportionately impacted, yet little is known about the epidemiology of HBV in this group. We conducted a cross-sectional study of pregnant women aged ≥16 years receiving antenatal care across 10 community health centers in Freetown from July to September 2021 to assess the prevalence and associated factors of HBsAg seropositivity. Logistic regression was used to identify the predictors of HBsAg seropositivity. In total, 394 pregnant women were screened. The mean age was 24.4 ± 4.9 years, 78.2% were marrie

Urogenital tract trauma in Port Harcourt.

A retrospective study of urogenital tract injuries treated in the Urology Unit of Port Harcourt University Teaching Hospital from January 1985 to December 1994 was done. There were 67 injuries in 62 patients. Fifty-five (82%) of these were blunt injuries. Males were more frequently injured (85%) than females. Patients younger than 60 years sustained 61 of the 67 injuries (91%) with peak incidence in the age groups 0-10 years (22%) and 21-30 years (28%). The urethra was the most frequently injured structure (49%) followed by the bladder (24%). The anatomically secured kidney and ureter as well

Bacterial vaginosis associated with increased risk of female-to-male HIV-1 transmission: a prospective cohort analysis among African couples.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial vaginosis (BV), a disruption of the normal vaginal flora, has been associated with a 60% increased risk of HIV-1 acquisition in women and higher concentration of HIV-1 RNA in the genital tract of HIV-1-infected women. However, whether BV, which is present in up to half of African HIV-1-infected women, is associated with an increase in HIV-1 transmission to male partners has not been assessed in previous studies. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We assessed the association between BV on female-to-male HIV-1 transmission risk in a prospective study of 2,236 HIV-1-seropositive women a

[Urocolpos and reflux of urine into the uterus in the aftermath of female genital mutilation at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Ouahigouya, Burkina Faso].

INTRODUCTION: Urocolpos is rare as is the reflux of urine into the uterus which may be associated with it. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a rarely described cause. We present two cases, one of which is associated with reflux of urine into the uterus. CLINICAL CASES: Two 7-year-old and 15-month-old girls presented after FGM with pelvic pain, pushing dysuria, and episodes of urine retention. RESULTS: It was the pelvic ultrasound which made it possible to objectify an urocolpos associated in the 7-year-old patient with reflux of urine into the uterine cavity. Bacteriology has isolated Esche

Eradicating Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: Human Rights-Based Approaches of Legislation, Education, and Community Empowerment.

Female genital mutilation/cutting is a form of violence against women and girls. It includes all procedures that involve the partial or total removal of external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is estimated that over 200 million girls and women worldwide have suffered the effects of this practice and that approximately 3.6 million girls and women are at risk each year. Female genital mutilation/cutting violates several human rights outlined under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discr

Female genital mutilation: Experience in a West London clinic.

In 1997, a new clinic was established at the Central Middlesex Hospital to serve the needs of a mainly Somali population who had suffered genital mutilation in childhood. Between June 1997 and January 2005, 4,125 clinic attendances were recorded. A total of 215 reversals of circumcision were carried out (FGM 3), all on a day-care basis. In the majority of cases, an intact and undamaged clitoris was found under the scar tissue. The clinic staff were able to draw attention to cultural and religious issues which proved important in the medical management of these women. The experience of this cli

Facilitators and barriers to voluntary medical male circumcision as an HIV prevention strategy in Kavango East, Namibia.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is a strategy used to try to limit new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections, as it has the potential to reduce HIV and/or AIDS transmission from women to men by up to 60%. However, in spite of efforts by the Ministry of Health and Social Services, only a few men in Namibia have been circumcised. The objective of this study was to explore and describe the facilitators of, and barriers to, medical male circumcision for HIV prevention in Kavango East, Namibia. METHODS: A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design wa

HIV prevalence correlated with circumcision prevalence and high-risk sexual behavior in India's states: an ecological study.

Background: HIV prevalence varies between 0% and 1.6% in India's states. The factors underpinning this variation are poorly defined. Methods: We evaluated the relationship between HIV prevalence by state and a range of risk factors in the Indian 2015 National Family Health Survey. Pearson's correlation was used to assess the relationship between HIV prevalence and each variable. The prevalence of each risk factor was compared between five high-HIV-prevalence states (>1% prevalence) and a large low-HIV-prevalence state (Uttar Pradesh; HIV prevalence, 0.06%). Results: There was an association be
