Heat, menstruation, and mental health in adolescence and young adulthood: Understudied in climate-health research.

Ambient heat is an escalating climate-related hazard, yet its implications for menstruation and adolescent and young adult mental health remain understudied. Menstruating individuals face unique physiological and psychosocial challenges that may be intensified in the presence of heat stress. These challenges can be further shaped by stigma, period poverty, and developmental vulnerability, with potential implications for depression, anxiety, and psychological wellbeing. Heat exposure may disrupt thermoregulation, exacerbate menstrual symptoms, and heighten psychological stress, but the combined

Chemical hazards in grapes and wine, climate change and challenges to face.

Climate change has an impact on the chemical risks associated to wine consumption related with grape development and microbial contamination. We can classify chemical hazards in wine into two groups: those present in grapes due to agricultural practices, environmental contamination or fungal growth and those coming from fermentation and the winemaking process. The first group includes mycotoxins, whilst the second encompasses ethyl carbamate, biogenic amines, sulfur dioxide and proteins used as technological ingredients such as fining material. Usually the effective control of chemical hazards

Abrupt recent trend changes in atmospheric nitrogen dioxide over the Middle East.

Nitrogen oxides, released from fossil fuel use and other combustion processes, affect air quality and climate. From the mid-1990s onward, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been monitored from space, and since 2004 with relatively high spatial resolution by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument. Strong upward NO2 trends have been observed over South and East Asia and the Middle East, in particular over major cities. We show, however, that a combination of air quality control and political factors, including economical crisis and armed conflict, has drastically altered the emission landscape of nitrogen oxid

Group climate as predictor of short- and long-term outcome in group therapy for social phobia.

A longitudinal study of 80 participants in cognitive and interpersonal group therapy for social phobia was conducted. The aim was to investigate the relationship between group climate and patients' short-term and long-term outcome. Group climate data was collected every other week during treatment, whereas social phobia symptoms were assessed at admission, discharge, and one year follow-up. Abbreviated symptom assessments were performed weekly. Regression analyses and mixed models were used in the analyses. Engagement predicted symptom reduction during treatment, from pretreatment to follow-up

Climate/chemistry feedbacks and biogenic emissions.

The oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere is affected by anthropogenic emissions and is projected to change in the future. Model calculations indicate that the change in surface ozone at some locations could be large and have significant implications for human health. The calculations depend on the precise scenarios used for the anthropogenic emissions and on the details of the feedback processes included in the model. One important factor is how natural biogenic emissions will change in the future. We carry out a sensitivity calculation to address the possible increase in isoprene emissions co

Predicting the potential distribution of Atractylodes lancea in China under CMIP6 climate scenarios using an optimized MaxEnt model.

Atractylodes lancea is an important medicinal plant in China, and climate change may affect wild-resource conservation and cultivation planning. However, its current potential ecological suitability, future range dynamics, and relationship with traditional or reported producing regions remain insufficiently clarified under optimized species distribution modelling and CMIP6 climate scenarios. We used 220 occurrence records and environmental variables related to climate, topography, vegetation, and soil to predict the current and future potential suitable habitats of A. lancea in China with an o

A Dirt(y) World in a Changing Climate: Importance of Heat Stress in the Risk Assessment of Pesticides for Soil Arthropods.

The rise in global temperatures and increasing severity of heat waves pose significant threats to soil organisms, disrupting ecological balances in soil communities. Additionally, the implications of environmental pollution are exacerbated in a warmer world, as changes in temperature affect the uptake, transformation and elimination of toxicants, thereby increasing the vulnerability of organisms. Nevertheless, our understanding of such processes remains largely unexplored. The present study examines the impact of high temperatures on the uptake and effects of the fungicide fluazinam on the spr

Recent advances in the study of mercury biogeochemistry in Arctic permafrost ecosystems.

Permafrost predominates in polar and high mountain regions, encompassing nearly 15 % of the exposed land in the Northern Hemisphere. It denotes soil or rock that remains at or below 0 °C for the duration of at least two consecutive years. These frozen soils serve as a barrier to contaminants that are stored and accumulated in permafrost over extended periods of time. One of these chemical compounds is mercury (Hg), a heavy metal well recognized for its severe toxic effects. Mercury presents a major risk worldwide to ecosystems, biota and human health and is strengthened by the Minamata Convent

Mercury dynamics in the pore water of peat columns during experimental freezing and thawing.

Biogeochemical processes in northern peatland ecosystems are influenced by seasonal temperature fluctuations that are changing with the climate. Methylmercury (MeHg), commonly produced in peatlands, affects downstream waters; therefore, it is important to understand how temperature transitions affect mercury (Hg) dynamics. We investigated how the freeze-thaw cycle influences belowground peat pore water total Hg (THg), MeHg, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Four large, intact peat columns were removed from an ombrotrophic peat bog and experimentally frozen and thawed. Pore water was sampled

Brown carbon is a significant contributor to aerosol climate forcing in the northwestern Himalayas.

We report here the climate-relevant optical properties and sources of water and organic-extractable brown carbon (BrCaq and BrCme) and its relative importance as a climate forcing agent in the northwestern (NW) Himalayan midlands (1044 m amsl). Diagnostic ratios coupled with trajectory and firespot-based analysis suggested that while biomass burning (BB) impacts are consistent in this region, a very significant influence is also exerted by the fossil fuel (FF)-dominated Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) outflow. BrC absorption peaked in winter, with ∼3-5 times enrichment in its absorption coefficient

Eco-emotions as the planetary boundaries: framing human emotional and planetary health in the global environmental crisis.

BACKGROUND: Affective processes play an important role in physical and mental health and in adaptation responses to the global environmental crisis. Eco-emotions-emotions that are substantially associated with the environment and anthropogenic changes happening within it-are complex and culturally varied. Despite the disproportionate impact of the global environmental crisis on low-income and middle-income countries, most psychological research to date has been conducted in high-income countries and has focused on climate change and negative climate emotions (eg, climate anxiety). The absence

Climate Change and Socioeconomic Vulnerability: The Carpathian Basin as a Potential Hotspot in the Dissemination of Dirofilaria repens in Europe.

Dirofilaria repens is a zoonotic parasite expanding across Europe due to climate change. We hypothesised that in this process, the Carpathian Basin has a facilitating effect. Using 426 georeferenced European cases, the probability of infection occurrence was determined in relation to climatic factors, surface water availability, regional social deprivation, and stray dog population density. To analyse the potential impacts of ecological and social factors (deprivation and stray dog population density), the MaxEnt algorithm, and spatial Empirical Bayes smoothing and bivariate local indicators o

Novel insights into microbial DMSP/DMS cycling: from surface to deep ocean.

The microbial cycling of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) constitutes a crucial component of the global sulfur cycle, influencing climate regulation through the release of climate-active gases. Since DMSP production has historically been attributed to planktonic algae, research on its cycling has consequently centered on the surface ocean. However, the continuous discovery of bacterial DMSP synthesis genes (dsyB, mmtN, and dsyGD) has confirmed that the DMSP/DMS cycling process may also exist in the aphotic deep-sea environment. Further supporting this, the recently

Climatic and social health determinants of malaria incidence in Tete, Mozambique: Bayesian spatio-temporal modeling of routine data (2016-2022).

This study aimed to investigate the spatio-temporal patterns and to assess climatic and social determinants of health as predictors of malaria incidence in Tete Province, Mozambique, from 2016 to 2022. The analysis was based on the INLA (Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations) approach, applied to a hierarchical Bayesian model that employed a reparameterized Besag spatial structure, an AR1 temporal process, and Type IV space-time interactions. To capture seasonality, first- and second-order Fourier terms were incorporated. Malaria case data were obtained from the SISMA platform, climatic var

Perspectives on current and future yeast technologies for ethanol-based biofuels and bioproducts.

Greenhouse gases drive climate change, which leads to less productive farmland and diminishing food security. Fossil oil, which is used for transport fuels and for manufacturing plastics, synthetic fabrics and other everyday products, is a major contributor to climate change. Significant greenhouse gas abatement can be achieved by replacing fossil oil with renewable biofuels. Bioethanol is proven as a road transport fuel and has potential to be converted into sustainable aviation fuel and chemicals currently made from oil. First-generation (1G) bioethanol is produced by yeast fermentation of s

Data collation for climate-cooling gas dimethylsulfide in Antarctic snow, sea ice and underlying seawater.

Dimethylsulfide (DMS) is a climatically active volatile sulfur compound found in Earth's oceans and atmosphere that plays an important role in cloud formation. DMS originates from its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), which is produced by several classes of phytoplankton. Concentrations of DMS and DMSP in Antarctic sea ice, snow and underlying seawater are not well documented and there is currently no dataset available to find the existing data. The purpose of this project was to compile historical measurements into a publicly available dataset. A total of 220 samples collected sinc
