BACKGROUND: Management and choice of sedation is important during critical illness in order to reduce patient suffering and to facilitate the delivery of care. Unfortunately, medications traditionally used for sedation in the intensive care unit (ICU) such as benzodiazepines and propofol are associated with significant unwanted effects. Although therapy with transdermal clonidine is considered an effective method of hypertension control, this mode of delivery has been associated with localized dermal reactions in numerous patients. We present a patient with coexistent mycosis fungoides and allergic contact dermatitis from transdermal clonidine. The association of these two dermatologic processes has not been previously reported.

Clonidine-displacing substance (CDS) is a novel endogenous ligand for clonidine receptors previously detected in bovine brain and human serum. We examined for the first time whether CDS can be detected and measured in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The forced swimming test (FST) in mice has failed to predict antidepressant activity for drugs having beta adrenoreceptor agonist activity and for serotonin uptake inhibitors.
