Neurocognitive Impairment and Social Cognition in Parkinson's Disease Patients.

In addition to motor symptoms, neurocognitive impairment (NCI) affects patients with prodromal Parkinson's disease (PD). NCI in PD ranges from subjective cognitive complaints to dementia. The purpose of this review is to present the available evidence of NCI in PD and highlight the heterogeneity of NCI phenotypes as well as the range of factors that contribute to NCI onset and progression. A review of publications related to NCI in PD up to March 2023 was performed using PubMed/Medline. There is an interconnection between the neurocognitive and motor symptoms of the disease, suggesting a commo

Lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins: Associations with cognition and dementia.

Due to increasing lifespan and aging populations globally there has been a steep rise in late-life dementia, which is now the second most common cause of death in high-income countries. In general, dementia can be divided into two major groups: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular-related dementia (VD). AD is pathologically characterised by senile plaques containing amyloid-β and neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau, whereas VD is dominated by vascular pathology such as cerebral small vessel disease, major strokes, and white matter lesions. Recently, the importance of v

Aldosterone in the brain and cognition: knowns and unknowns.

Mineralocorticoid receptors are expressed in several structures of the central nervous system, and aldosterone levels can be measured in the brain, although in smaller amounts than in plasma. Nevertheless, these amounts appear to be sufficient to elicit substantial clinical effects. Primary aldosteronism, characterized by high levels of plasma aldosterone, is one of the most common causes of secondary hypertension. In this context, high aldosterone levels may have both indirect and direct effects on the brain with a negative impact on several cerebral functions. Thus, chronic aldosterone exces

Cognition and behavior in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a congenital neurocutaneous disorder. As NF1 is incurable and presents with a wide range of physical and mental symptoms, knowledge of neurocognitive and behavioral functioning can be an important aid in understanding their functional impact, and developing treatment options. To date, studies in children with NF1 have shown dysfunction in several domains, but much less is known about cognition and behavior in adults with NF1. The present study describes the neuropsychological phenotype of adults with NF1 based on comprehensive clinical examination

Associations between olfactory dysfunction and cognition: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Strong evidence suggests that olfactory dysfunction (OD) can predict additional neurocognitive decline in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, research exploring olfaction and cognition in younger populations is limited. The aim of this review is to evaluate cognitive changes among non-elderly adults with non-COVID-19-related OD. METHODS: We performed a structured comprehensive literature search of PubMed, Ovid Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library in developing this scoping review. The primary outcome of interest was the ass

Social cognition deficits in borderline personality disorder: Clinical relevance.

Interpersonal difficulties in borderline personality disorder (BDP) have been suggested to be related to impairments in Social Cognition (SC), mainly due to deficits in Theory of Mind (ToM). However, literature is scarce and ambiguous. This work aims to study the SC impairments in BPD patients, by the specific assessment of ToM deficits, and to investigate the relationship between these SC impairments and clinical variables. 82 BPD patients with BPD and 47 control subjects were assessed with the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Clinical variables of severity, chronicity, fu

Effects of Dietary Methionine Restriction on Cognition in Mice.

Dietary restriction of the essential amino acid, methionine, has been shown to induce unique metabolic protection. The peripheral benefits of methionine restriction (MR) are well established and include improvements in metabolic, energy, inflammatory, and lifespan parameters in preclinical models. These benefits all occur despite MR increasing energy intake, making MR an attractive dietary intervention for the prevention or reversal of many metabolic and chronic conditions. New and emerging evidence suggests that MR also benefits the brain and promotes cognitive health. Despite widespread inte

The Relationship Between Cannabis, Cognition, and Schizophrenia: It's Complicated.

The consequences of cannabis use, especially in the context of schizophrenia, have gained increased importance with the legalization of cannabis in North America and across the globe. Cannabis use has multifaceted impacts on cognition in schizophrenia patients and healthy subjects. Healthy subjects, particularly those who initiated cannabis use at earlier ages and used high-potency cannabis for longer durations, exhibited poorer cognition mainly in working memory and attention. Cannabis use in schizophrenia has been associated with symptom exacerbation, longer and more frequent psychotic episo

Social cognition in hyperkinetic movement disorders: a systematic review.

Numerous lines of research indicate that our social brain involves a network of cortical and subcortical brain regions that are responsible for sensing and controlling body movements. However, it remains unclear whether movement disorders have a systematic impact on social cognition. To address this question, we conducted a systematic review examining the influence of hyperkinetic movement disorders (including Huntington disease, Tourette syndrome, dystonia, and essential tremor) on social cognition. Following the PRISMA guidelines and registering the protocol in the PROSPERO database (CRD4202

Central vestibular networking for sensorimotor control, cognition, and emotion.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to illuminate the extent of the bilateral central vestibular network from brainstem and cerebellum to subcortical and cortical areas and its interrelation to higher cortical functions such as spatial cognition and anxiety. RECENT FINDINGS: The conventional view that the main function of the vestibular system is the perception of self-motion and body orientation in space and the sensorimotor control of gaze and posture had to be developed further by a hierarchical organisation with bottom-up and top-down interconnections. Even the vestibulo-ocular a

Paleoanthropology of cognition: an overview on Hominins brain evolution.

Recent advances in neurobiology, paleontology, and paleogenetics allow us to associate changes in brain size and organization with three main "moments" of increased behavioral complexity and, more speculatively, language development. First, Australopiths display a significant increase in brain size relative to the great apes and an incipient extension of postnatal brain development. However, their cortical organization remains essentially similar to that of apes. Second, over the last 2 My, with two notable exceptions, brain size increases dramatically, partly in relation to changes in body si

Plant-derived nootropics and human cognition: A systematic review.

Substances with modulatory capabilities on certain aspects of human cognition have been revered as nootropics from the dawn of time. The plant kingdom provides most of the currently available nootropics of natural origin. Here, in this systematic review, we aim to provide state-of-the-art information regarding proven and unproven effects of plant-derived nootropics (PDNs) on human cognition in conditions of health and disease. Six independent searches, one for each neurocognitive domain (NCD), were performed in parallel using three independent scientific library databases: PubMed, Cochrane and

Impact of unilateral ureteral obstruction on cognition and neurodegeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment is a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Currently, limited types of animal models are available for studying cognitive impairment in CKD. We used unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in mice as an animal model to study the cognitive changes and related pathology under prolonged renal impairment METHODS: UUO was performed in 8-week-old male C57BL/6 N mice with double-ligation of their left ureter. A sham group was subjected to the same experimental procedure without ureteral obstruction. Cognitive and behavioral tests were performed

Effects of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) on cognition.

Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) is a modern non-invasive brain stimulation method demonstrated as effective in the treatment of major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This review aims to survey present knowledge concerning the cognitive function changes identified in dTMS research. A systematic literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar was performed and 23 out of 64 studies on dTMS and cognitive functioning were included in the review. Ten studies were conducted with patients with affective disorders, six with healthy participants, two with schizophrenia p

Perseverative Cognition and Snack Choice: An Online Pilot Investigation.

Perseverative cognition (PC), consisting of worry and rumination, has been consistently linked to a variety of poorer health outcomes, namely via the worsening of stress-induced health risk behaviours. However, research into PC and unhealthy food choice, a key health behaviour, still remains relatively unexplored. In the current pilot investigation, 284 participants were recruited to take part in an online food choice paradigm before completing the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire (PTQ) and the Brief State Rumination Inventory (BSRI). As a reduced availability of unhealthy snacks has been

Patterns of psychopathology and cognition in sex chromosome aneuploidy.

BACKGROUND: Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) are a collectively common family of genetic disorders that increase the risk for neuropsychiatric and cognitive impairment. Beyond being important medical disorders in their own right, SCAs also offer a unique naturally occurring model for studying X- and Y-chromosome influences on the human brain. However, it remains unclear if (i) different SCAs are associated with different profiles of psychopathology and (ii) the notable interindividual variation in psychopathology is related to co-occurring variation in cognitive ability. METHODS: We examine
