The term heterotopy of the spiral colon encompasses a dysmorphological condition in which the spiral loops of the ascending colon (SLACs) do not form an orderly spiraling mass adjacent to the left side of the mesojejunum. As a consequence, the spiral loops are spread over a larger surface, making them more or less movable. We report a case of effective treatment comprising mFOLFOX6 plus bevacizumab for neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ascending colon. A 60-year-old woman was admitted for diarrhea and abdominal pain. Colonoscopy showed a Type 2 tumor in the ascending colon. She was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cell carcinoma based on biopsy and immunostaining. Paneth cells (PCs) contribute to the host defense against indigenous bacteria in the small intestine. We found Paneth cell-like cells (PLCs) in the rat ascending colon, but the nature of PLCs is never clarified. An adenosquamous carcinoma is a malignancy that has both glandular and squamous histologic components. Both components are malignant and have potential to metastasize. An adenosquamous carcinoma of the large bowel is rare, and its clinicopathologic behavior is not fully understood. It is reported to be more aggressive and have a worse prognosis when it is compared with an adenocarcinoma alone. We present a case of an adenosquamous carcinoma in the ascending colon which was laparoscopically resected and followed by adjuvant chemotherapy.

A total of 881 cases of diverticula of cecum and the ascending colon were reviewed, including 30 new cases at the authors' institution. The average patient age was 43.6 years. The preoperative diagnosis was correct in only 7 per cent of the cases. Appendicitis accounted for 68 per cent of the preoperative diagnoses. A case of non-rotation of the bowel is presented wherein volvulus of the colon occurred causing acute obstruction. Spontaneous reduction following a barium enema as well as the patient's history leads us to suspect that volvulus had occurred in the past and was responsible for the intermittent nature of the patient's symptoms.
