Antimicrobial resistance: Biofilms, small colony variants, and intracellular bacteria.

Soft tissue and bone infections continue to be a serious complication in orthopedic and trauma surgery. Both can lead to a high burden for the patients and the healthcare system. Musculoskeletal infections can be induced by intraoperative contamination, bacterial contamination of open wounds or hematogenous bacterial spread. During the recent decades, advances were achieved in the understanding of pathogenesis and antibiotic resistance. Despite some progress in the diagnosis and advancing of therapeutic concepts, groundbreaking successful improvement of treatment concepts is still missing. Cur

Individual personality predicts social network assemblages in a colonial bird.

Animal personalities manifest as consistent individual differences in the performance of specific behavioural expressions. Personality research has implications for zoo animal welfare, as it can further our understanding of how captive individuals may differ in their resource use and provide insight into improving individual and group social health. For group living species, personality may enable assortment based on similar behaviour and influence an individual's interactions with conspecifics (e.g. social support). This research aimed to document how personality traits (aggressive, explorato

Suspected Mefloquine Toxicity in a Colony of Humboldt Penguins (Spheniscus humboldti).

Avian malaria is an important cause of mortality in captive penguins housed in outdoor exhibits. Mefloquine was used as a prophylaxis to treat a colony of 19 Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) for avian malaria. A target dose of 30 mg/kg was obtained from anecdotal literature for sphenisciforms that was not based on pharmacokinetic or toxicity studies. For this reason, preliminary plasma concentrations of mefloquine were acquired after the first dose in some penguins to ensure that plasma concentrations reached human malaria prophylactic concentrations. Afterward, each penguin in the ent

Colony stimulating factors for prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia in children.

INTRODUCTION: Febrile neutropenia (FN) is one of the complications of chemotherapy that can increase the risk of infection and mortality. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs) are used in practice to prevent and treat episodes of neutropenia. The use of G-CSFs in children with cancer has not been studied much for primary prophylaxis of FN. AREAS COVERED: Current data suggest that G-CSFs have a similar pharmacokinetic profile in children and adults. Clinical trials published from 2002 to 2021 using G-CSFs in pediatric cancer patients were reviewed. All evaluated clinical trials used

Nitric oxide signaling controls collective contractions in a colonial choanoflagellate.

Although signaling by the gaseous molecule nitric oxide (NO) regulates key physiological processes in animals, including contractility,1-3 immunity,4,5 development,6-9 and locomotion,10,11 the early evolution of animal NO signaling remains unclear. To reconstruct the role of NO in the animal stem lineage, we set out to study NO signaling in choanoflagellates, the closest living relatives of animals.12 In animals, NO produced by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) canonically signals through cGMP by activating soluble guanylate cyclases (sGCs).13,14 We surveyed the distribution of the NO signaling

Sand Fly Colony Crash Tentatively Attributed to Nematode Infestation.

Maintenance of laboratory colonies of insects and other arthropod pests offers significant research advantages. The availability, age, sex, housing conditions, nutrition, and relative uniformity over time of biological material for research facilitate comparison of results between experiments that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. A laboratory research colony of Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli), old world sand flies, was maintained with high-colony productivity for a number of years, but within a relatively short (4-6 mo) time period, colony productivity declined from over 10,000 flies

Novel Aminoglycoside-Tolerant Phoenix Colony Variants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen and is known to produce biofilms. We previously showed the emergence of colony variants in the presence of tobramycin-loaded calcium sulfate beads. In this study, we characterized the variant colonies, which survived the antibiotic treatment, and identified three distinct phenotypes-classically resistant colonies, viable but nonculturable colonies (VBNC), and phoenix colonies. Phoenix colonies, described here for the first time, grow out of the zone of clearance of antibiotic-loaded beads from lawn biofilms while there are still ver

High prevalence of Seoul hantavirus in a breeding colony of pet rats.

As part of further investigations into three linked haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) cases in Wales and England, 21 rats from a breeding colony in Cherwell, and three rats from a household in Cheltenham were screened for hantavirus. Hantavirus RNA was detected in either the lungs and/or kidney of 17/21 (81%) of the Cherwell rats tested, higher than previously detected by blood testing alone (7/21, 33%), and in the kidneys of all three Cheltenham rats. The partial L gene sequences obtained from 10 of the Cherwell rats and the three Cheltenham rats were identical to each other and t

Amyloidosis in a Captive Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) Research Colony.

Five birds in a captive zebra finch research colony were diagnosed with systemic amyloidosis within a 7-mo period by means of postmortem Congo red staining and green birefringence under polarized light. The liver was the most frequently and usually the most seriously affected organ, followed by the spleen and then the kidney. All 5 birds had been clinically affected with various inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic conditions associated with amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis in humans and animals. Immunohistochemistry using antisera against duck AA protein revealed that tissues from 2 of the 5 bi

[The Japanese Colonial Medicine as Seen Through the Life of Fujita Tsuguakira].

Fujita Tsuguakira was a man who established Jahyeuiwon, a governmental medical facility, during the Residency-General Period and took over the presidency of a committee in the Japanese Government-General of Chosun after Chosun was annexed to Japanese. In addition, he is a man well qualified to be placed on the top of the list when discussing the Japanese colonial medicine in Chosun, considering his personal history of getting evolved in the colonial rule of Taiwan for seven years as an army surgeon. He led the colonial medicine in Chosun for nine years before and after the Japanese annexation

Enterococcus faecium small colony variant endocarditis in an immunocompetent patient.

Small colony variants (SCV) are slow-growing subpopulations of bacteria usually associated with auxotrophism, causing persistent or recurrent infections. Enterococcus faecalis SCV have been seldom described, and only one case of Enterococcus faecium SCV has been reported, associated with sepsis in a leukaemia patient. Here we report the first case described of bacteraemia and endocarditis by SCV E. faecium in an immunocompetent patient.

Ant-cuckoo colony optimization for feature selection in digital mammogram.

Digital mammogram is the only effective screening method to detect the breast cancer. Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) textural features are extracted from the mammogram. All the features are not essential to detect the mammogram. Therefore identifying the relevant feature is the aim of this work. Feature selection improves the classification rate and accuracy of any classifier. In this study, a new hybrid metaheuristic named Ant-Cuckoo Colony Optimization a hybrid of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Cuckoo Search (CS) is proposed for feature selection in Digital Mammogram. ACO is a goo

Colony-stimulating factor-1: a potential biomarker for lupus nephritis.

A noninvasive means to predict the onset and recurrence of lupus nephritis (LN) before overt renal injury is needed to optimize and individualize treatment. Colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) is expressed by kidney tubules at the onset of LN, increases with disease progression, and spills into the circulation in lupus-prone mice. We tested the hypothesis that amplified expression of CSF-1 detected in the serum or urine correlates with intrarenal CSF-1 expression and histopathology (increased macrophage accumulation, activity indices) and clinical kidney disease activity and predicts the onset

Disturbance driven colony fragmentation as a driver of a coral disease outbreak.

In September of 2010, Brewer's Bay reef, located in St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), was simultaneously affected by abnormally high temperatures and the passage of a hurricane that resulted in the mass bleaching and fragmentation of its coral community. An outbreak of a rapid tissue loss disease among coral colonies was associated with these two disturbances. Gross lesion signs and lesion progression rates indicated that the disease was most similar to the Caribbean coral disease white plague type 1. Experiments indicated that the disease was transmissible through direct contact between colon

Mechanisms of hepatoprotective effect of immobilized granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

The effect of immobilized granulocyte CSF on morphological characteristics and functional state of the liver was studied during chronic toxic hepatitis. The mechanisms of the therapeutic action of this agent were evaluated. The product had a strong hepatoprotective effect and exhibited the antiinflammatory and antisclerotic properties. The mechanism of activation of reserve systems for cell renewal (involved in restoration of the liver tissue) is probably related to an increase in proliferative activity of early precursor cells in the bone marrow, mobilization of these cells into the periphera

The influence of riboflavin and nicotinic acid on Shigella sonnei colony conversion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Shigella, causative of bacillary dysentery, has two colony forms. The loss of large virulence plasmid from virulent Shigella sonnei form I, during cell storage and subculturing, lead to avirulent form II. Environmental factors, e.g. culture media composition, could affect the conversion of the bacterial forms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, some components, i.e., B-complex vitamins, nicotinic acid and riboflavin, were added to the bacterial culture medium and their influence on colony conversion were examined. RESULTS: The findings revealed that colony conve
