Stages of condom use and decisional balance among college students.

AIMS: To explore sexual behaviours and condom use and differences in specific items of perceived benefits and barriers to condoms using the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) stages among college students in southern Taiwan. BACKGROUND: The TTM suggests that individuals in the action or maintenance stage exhibit higher levels of perceived benefits and lower levels of perceived barriers related to condom use than people in the precontemplation, contemplation or preparation stage. METHODS: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional design with cluster sampling among college students from two universiti…

Promoting sexual health: practical guidance on male condom use.

Condoms are the only form of contraception that, when used correctly, can reduce the risk of pregnancy and transmission of sexually transmitted infections. This article outlines strategies for promoting correct male condom use. The availability, variety and history of condoms are explored. Possible reasons for people not wanting to use condoms are examined and advantages of condom use are provided. The author suggests ways in which healthcare workers can promote condom use and improve the experience and efficacy of this contraceptive device.

Prototypical images in condom scripts among AIDS-bereaved adolescents.

Twenty-five HIV-negative late adolescents (13 women and 12 men) who had lost a parent to AIDS generated vignettes in which the characters were deciding whether to use a condom (condom scripts). Two clinically trained judges rated the interpersonal tone of the condom scripts on 17 semantic differential scales. Three other clinically trained raters described script characters' attributes by selecting from a list of 36 terms. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and individual differences hierarchical classes analyses (INDCLAS) were used to inductively derive a typology of condom scripts. Two dimension

Longitudinal test of a multiple domain model of adolescent condom use.

A comprehensive multiple domain model (MDM) to understand condom use in adolescents was proposed and tested using structural equation modeling of data at three time points. The proposed model integrates social psychological theory, demographic and personality factors, social environment, and situational/contextual variables. Adolescents who were sexually active at time 2 (6 months after baseline) and time 3 (1 year after time 2) and completed surveys at all three time points were included in the analyses (N = 511). An iterative process of model testing resulted in a structural equation model t

What really works? An exploratory study of condom negotiation strategies.

Verbal-direct strategies are assumed to be the most effective strategies in negotiating condom use. Both cultural and gender differences in communication styles suggest that individuals may negotiate condoms in ways that are not exclusively verbal and direct. This study examined the use of other forms of condom negotiations by developing an exploratory scale that distinguished strategies on how verbal and direct they were (i.e., verbal-direct, verbal-indirect, nonverbal-direct, nonverbal-indirect). The study compared the use of negotiation strategies among Asian and White American students at …

Male condom use in Tanzania: results from a national survey.

OBJECTIVE: To determine factors associated with male condom use in Tanzania. METHODS: Data from the 1996 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) was used. In this survey, a national representative sample of sexually active men (N=1898) and women (N=7027) were interviewed to obtain information about potential predictors of sexual practices and condom use. RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety (4.1%) women and 288 (15.2%) men had used condoms during their last sexual encounter. Men aged 20-24 years and women aged 15-19 years reported the highest rate of condom use. In both men and women, condo…

Condom use in young blacks and Hispanics in public STD clinics.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Young blacks and Hispanics are an emerging risk group for contracting HIV. The goal of this study was to assess t … n. The most important correlate of condom use among males and females was the frequency of carrying condoms. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that offering educational group sessions and attractive means for carrying condoms to patients in STD clinics may have the potential to increase condom use. The efficacy of these intervention strategies should be …

Planned condom use among women undergoing tubal sterilization.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Women who are undergoing tubal sterilization are at risk for various sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) if they do not use a barrier method of contraception. There is a paucity of data concerning dual use of condoms among sterilized women. GOAL: Planned use of condoms for protection against STDs was examined among 2,782 women undergoing surgical sterilization from 1991 to 1996. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: Planned condom use increased significantly over the 6-year study period. Of women who were using condoms before sterilization (n = 646), nea…

Condom use with main partners by sterilized and non-sterilized women.

This study examined condom use with main partners by surgically sterilized and non-sterilized women at risk for HIV infection. Data were obtained from 379 African American women residing in low-income urban communities. Sterilized women were one-fifth as likely as non-sterilized women to use condoms. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that for both groups of women, higher perceived benefits of condom use for disease prevention were associated with condom use. In addition, younger age, self-efficacy for condom use, peer support for condom use, and whether condoms were ever used for preg…

A process evaluation of condom availability in the Seattle, Washington public schools.

In 1993, Seattle began making condoms available in all of its 15 high schools. As part of an evaluation of this program, 16 focus groups with students from 13 high schools were conducted to explore students' perceptions of the school environment, program effectiveness, and suggestions for program improvement. The study also included data from a student survey conducted in 10 high schools. The focus group results revealed that students support school condom availability but have concerns about privacy when obtaining condoms. Students prefer obtaining condoms from baskets in private areas of sch…

Protocol for changing condom catheters in males with spinal cord injury.

A five year study was conducted to determine the appropriate frequency for routine changing of condom catheters in males with spinal cord injury. One hundred and thirteen outpatient subjects participated in a non-randomized study. Eighty subjects changed their condom catheters on a daily basis, and 33 changed their condom catheters every other day. The subjects were questioned and the clinic record was reviewed by a nurse clinician about the incidence of skin and urinary complications occurring in the previous year. The most common skin complication found in both groups was redness, followed b

Attitudes toward condom use among female college students.

The purpose of this study was to explore attitudes toward condom use, identify the frequency of condom usage, and examine the relationship between attitudes and condom use among sexually active female college students. This descriptive study used a convenience sample of 47 female college students attending a rural county family planning clinic. Students who reported condom use scored significantly higher on the Condom Attitudes Scale than those not using condoms. Other significant differences between condom and noncondom users were noted. The results provide insight into strategies for improvi…

Factors associated with condom use in a high-risk heterosexual population.

The use of condoms has been advocated as a means of preventing the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted agents. To better understand factors that may influence condom use, 300 heterosexuals were enrolled in a cross-sectional study of patients attending San Francisco's only public sexually transmitted disease clinic. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were conducted. Condom use at last sexual intercourse was examined by logistic regression analysis. Men who used drugs or alcohol at last intercourse and whose partners did not want to use condoms we…

Sexual issues and condom use among injecting drug users.

Recent surveys of injecting drug users reveal that their injecting behaviours have changed in the light of HIV, but their sexual behaviours have not and, in particular, they remain reluctant to use condoms to reduce the risks of sexual transmission. In an attempt to explore this issue further the present study assessed the behaviours and attitudes of injecting drug users to sexual issues, including condom use. Condom use was low. Obstacles to their use included for some a desire to conceive, for many a belief in their infertility, a perceived invulnerability to HIV infection through their sexu…

Attitudinal and behavioral correlates of condom use in urban adolescent males.

To determine correlates of condom use in adolescent males, we administered a sexual behavior questionnaire to 105 urban males attending a general adolescent clinic. The mean age was 16.5 +/- 1.6 years, and all reported heterosexual activity during the prior 3 months. Condom use was significantly (p less than 0.05) associated with perceived hassle of use (Spearman's rho = -0.40), perception of girlfriend's attitude toward condoms (rho = -0.36), self-confidence in correct use (rho = 0.26), younger age (rho = 0.25), reported degree of exposure to sexually transmitted disease (STD) education (rho …
