Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus [Pnc]) is a causative agent of many infectious diseases, including pneumonia, septicemia, otitis media, and conjunctivitis. There have been documented conjunctivitis outbreaks in which nontypeable (NT), nonencapsulated Pnc has been identified as the etiological agent. The use of mass spectrometry to comparatively and differentially analyze protein and peptide profiles of whole-cell microorganisms remains somewhat uncharted. In this report, we discuss a comparative proteomic analysis between NT S. pneumoniae conjunctivitis outbreak strains (cPnc) and other

Epidemic conjunctivitis can be associated with viral or bacterial pathogens, whereas epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is caused mainly by adenoviruses type 8,19 and 37. In Germany, the incidence of adenovirus conjunctivitis cases increased from 0.2 per 100 000 inhabitants (in 2001 and 2002) eventually to 0.5 in 2003 and 0.8 in 2004. The detection of adenovirus in conjunctival swabs is notifiable to the local health departments. Data about cases with positive conjunctival swabs are then transmitted to the Robert Koch-Institut. Quality control of data takes place and national surveillance data of c

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Bacterial conjunctivitis is a common ocular infection requiring prompt treatment, particularly in vulnerable patients, and may influence perioperative outcomes. This study aimed to characterize conjunctival bacterial isolates phenotypically and genotypically, to evaluate their biofilm-forming capacity, and to investigate the relationship between resistance gene carriage, resistance phenotypes, and biofilm-associated antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
METHODS: A prospective, single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted on bacterial isolates from conjunctival samples o

BACKGROUND: Neisseria meningitidis is a rare cause of acute bacterial conjunctivitis but can progress to invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in the case and their close contacts. There is, however, a lack of consensus on the clinical and public health management of primary meningococcal conjunctivitis (PMC).
METHODS: We searched Ovid MEDLINE via PubMed, EMBASE and NHS evidence (up to June 2019) for all publications relating to meningococcal conjunctivitis to provide an evidence-base for developing guidelines for the management of PMC cases and their close contacts.
RESULTS: The review ident

Neisseria meningitidis is an uncommon cause of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Twenty-one cases of primary meningococcal conjunctivitis (PMC) are reported herein and 63 cases published in the literature since 1899 are reviewed. In the 84 cases of PMC available for analysis, the male-to-female ratio was 1.76:1; nine of the patients were neonates, 55 were children, and 20 were adults. Conjunctivitis was unilateral in 66.3% of the patients. Gram stain of conjunctival exudate disclosed gram-negative diplococci in all cases in which it was done. Culture of the conjunctival exudate yielded N. mening

BACKGROUND: In captive breed turtles and tortoises conjunctival disease is common. Our aim was to investigate the bacterial and fungal flora present in the eyes of healthy and pathological chelonians and to compare findings in turtles with those in tortoises.
RESULTS: Samples were taken from the conjunctival sacs of 34, diseased and healthy, chelonians (18 tortoises and 16 turtles) and submitted to bacterial and fungal investigation. All samples showed bacterial growth. Thirteen animals (38%), harboured a single bacterial species as sole isolate and twenty-one animals (62%) harboured more tha

In early summer, 1990, 3590 schoolboys from the Al-Baha region of Saudi Arabia were assessed for their ocular status. Children from 15 schools were randomly selected to assess eye problems and visual defects. Of the boys examined 3521 (89.7%) had visual acuity of 20/30 or better and 3443 (95.9%) achieved 20/30 or better after correction. The main causes of visual impairment were refractive error in 260 (7.2%) and amblyopia in 58 (1.6%). Seventeen (0.5%) boys had strabismus. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis was found in 204 (5.7%). Four hundred and forty-nine (26.4%) had nonspecific conjunctivitis,

SEM was used to visualize tear-film/hydrogel polymer surface interactions. Lenses were preserved by fixation including a quaternary ammonium complex to aid in mucin preservation. In less than 2 weeks of continuous wear the anterior surface was completely coated, yet the coating was absent from the posterior lens surface. Tear-film break-up over the deposited lens surface, combined with degradation and deformation at the polymer surface boundary, as well as entrapment of moieties within the polymer matrix, all occurred. These are the likely culprits which can contribute to adverse reactions as

BACKGROUND: Eye infections can cause loss or impairment of visual function and can lead to severe impairment. Bacteria are the most common pathogens that affect the structure of the eye. As a result, quick identification of the causative agents and testing of their medication susceptibility are essential for effective treatment of eye infections. This study was intended for determining the extent of bacterial isolates from external eye infections (EEIs) and their susceptibility to antibiotics.
METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending Menelik II Re

Endophthalmitis due to endogenous or exogenous bacteria is a rare infection of the eye. We report a case of endophthalmitis following Listeria monocytogenes keratoconjunctivitis in a 27-year-old healthy white male presenting with hand motion visual acuity, right eye mucopurulent conjunctivitis, elevated intraocular pressure, and pigmented hypopyon 6 months post-keratectomy. The conjunctivitis was unresponsive to a 5-day course of topical tobramycin eye drops, and the patient developed keratitis with pain that progressed to endophthalmitis after 21 days. Diagnostic B-scan revealed vitreous exud

"Red eyes and red rash with fever" is a common pediatric complaint; however, it is an uncommon initial presentation for staphylococcal obturator abscess with adjacent ischial osteomyelitis. The case of a 13-year-old boy who was admitted to the hospital with conjunctivitis, erythematous maculopapular lesions, and fever and had this final diagnosis is reported. The differential diagnosis included various bacterial diseases, several viral illnesses, and rickettsial disease.

The first genome assemblies of Gnomoniopsis castaneae (syn. G. smithogilvyi), the causal agent of chestnut brown rot of kernels, shoot blight and cankers, are provided here. Specifically, the complete genome of the Italian ex-type MUT401 isolate was compared to the draft genome of a second Italian isolate (GN01) and to the ICMP 14040 isolate from New Zealand. The three genome sequences were obtained through a hybrid assembly using both short Illumina reads and long Nanopore reads, their coding sequences were annotated and compared with each other and with other Diaporthales. OBJECTIVE: Conjunctivitis has been reported in people suffering from COVID-19. However, many ocular symptoms are associated with the term 'conjunctivitis' which may be misleading. It is also unknown whether ocular symptoms were different in chronic sufferers of anterior eye diseases, when they were experienced or how long they lasted for compared with other COVID-19 symptoms.
METHODS: An online structured questionnaire obtained self-report data from people who had a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. Data for the type, frequency and duration of different COVID-19 symptoms were ascertained. Ante
