Contraceptive usage patterns in North American medical students.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that the sexual beliefs and mores of students in medical professions may influence their capacity to care for patients' sexuality and contraception issues. Students also represent a large sample of reproductive-age individuals. In this study, we examined contraceptive usage patterns in North American medical students. STUDY DESIGN: Students using online medical student social and information networks enrolled in allopathic and osteopathic medical schools in North America between February and July of 2008 were invited to participate via email and published

The dapivirine vaginal ring from the perspective of married men in Uganda.

Background: Men play a key role in influencing uptake of women's health products, such as female condoms and vaginal microbicides used for family planning and HIV prevention.Method: We explored men's perceptions of the dapivirine vaginal ring (DVR), a vaginal microbicide, in Kalungu District, rural south-western Uganda. In June/July 2018, we conducted in-depth interviews with 10 partners of women participating in the DREAM study, a phase 3B open-label extension trial of the DVR. Data were analysed thematically, drawing on the socio-ecological model theoretical framework. Results: Influencing fa

Teenagers' awareness of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and the impact on their sexual behavior.

One hundred female teenagers attending a teenage pregnancy program were studied to determine the extent of their awareness about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the impact of such knowledge on their sexual behavior. Ninety-eight knew that AIDS is a disease, 45 stated that it is fatal, and all knew that it can be transmitted by sexual intercourse. After becoming aware of AIDS, 59 changed their sexual habits, 41 decreased their number of sexual partners, and 13 who had not used condoms started using them. However, only seven obtained more information about their partners' sexual an

Knowledge of contraceptive methods and services among tertiary students in far North Queensland.

Despite the availability of a wide range of contraceptive options in Australia, rates of unintended pregnancy remain high. A survey of tertiary students in Far North Queensland in regard to their knowledge of contraceptive methods and services revealed significant deficiencies, suggesting that existing sex education and contraceptive advice services need improving if unplanned pregnancy rates are to be reduced in this population.

Condom use prevents genital ulcers in women working as prostitutes. Influence of human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Control of genital ulcer disease (GUD) is a proposed intervention to slow the dissemination of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Programs for the control of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) should focus on groups of high-frequency transmitters, such as prostitutes and their clientele. This study illustrates the interaction between the prevalence of chancroid, use of barrier prophylaxis against STDs, and HIV infection in a population of female prostitutes in Nairobi. Four hundred and twenty three women were evaluated. Despite the increased use of condoms, the prevalence of genita

Contraception for Adolescents with Medically Complex Conditions.

Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have developed, published, and updated evidence-based guidelines to support medical providers in the provision of contraceptives to patients with specific medical conditions or characteristics. The goal of these guidelines is to provide recommendations on the safe use of contraceptives with the goal of removing unnecessary medical barriers to access and use of contraceptives, thus decreasing the number of unintended pregnancies. Many medical conditions increase a patient's risk of venous thromboem

Microgrooves and fluid flows provide preferential passageways for sperm over pathogen Tritrichomonas foetus.

Successful mammalian reproduction requires that sperm migrate through a long and convoluted female reproductive tract before reaching oocytes. For many years, fertility studies have focused on biochemical and physiological requirements of sperm. Here we show that the biophysical environment of the female reproductive tract critically guides sperm migration, while at the same time preventing the invasion of sexually transmitted pathogens. Using a microfluidic model, we demonstrate that a gentle fluid flow and microgrooves, typically found in the female reproductive tract, synergistically facili

Effects of communication with important social referents on beliefs and intentions to use condoms.

Data from a 1989 survey using the condom attitude and belief instrument with 310 clients from two sexually transmitted disease clinics identified significant social referents who influence condom-use intentions. They are sexual partner, father and friends. The present study found that communication with these referents had a positive net effect on beliefs about and intentions to use condoms. Implications applicable for intervention programmes to increase condom use are to promote talking about condoms between the sexual partners and important social referents and to develop such communication

Provider confidence and willingness to insert and remove long-acting reversible contraception methods in Kenyan public facilities.

OBJECTIVE: Use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) in Kenya has grown over the last decade, yet emerging evidence points to challenges in LARC removal. The objective of this paper is to document provider training in LARC insertion/removal and to better understand provider experience, confidence, and willingness to both insert and remove LARC. STUDY DESIGN: In this paper we present a descriptive analysis of self-reported data from family planning providers working in all 137 public-sector healthcare facilities in Kisumu County (Western Kenya). We assess the frequency of public-secto

[Surgical intervention against overpopulation: Professor Weinhold's foreskin infibulation].

One of the most bizarre and forgotten suggestions to have developed from the discussion of pauperism in the 19th century was the infibulation of the impoverished men. A communication in 1827 from the Halle professor of surgery, Carl August Weinhold (1782-1829), raised indignation and caused ironic as well as angry reactions. Despite such a heated response, Weinhold's proposed method of population control soon fell into oblivion, a fate considered by this contemporaries as "highly desirable".
