[Onconephrology - Interdisciplinary Cooperation of Nephrologists and Oncologists in the Treatment of Multiple Myeloma].

Plasma cell diseases, in particular multiple myeloma, represent an interdisciplinary challenge for oncologists and nephrologists. Patients often present initially with kidney problems to a nephrologist, requiring timely diagnosis and referral to an oncologist for treatment. On the other hand, a relevant part of patients will experience a - mostly temporary - decline in kidney function during the treatment course, which may require nephrological care. In any case, renal insufficiency can affect the therapeutic options. This article provides a short overview about common nephrological factors an

The Singaporean model in public goods dilemmas with benevolent leaders and bribery.

Public goods dilemmas are at the heart of some of the greatest challenges of our time, including climate inaction, growing inequality, and the overuse of natural resources. The public goods game in which cooperators contribute to a common pool that is then shared equally with defectors who contribute nothing captures the gist of the problem. Cooperators therefore cannot prevail, which ultimately leads to the tragedy of the commons. Actions such as punishment, rewards, and exclusion have been shown to help, but they are costly, therefore rendering cooperators second-order free-riders due to the

Improving organisational resilience through enterprise security risk management.

Enterprise Security Risk Management (ESRM) is a new philosophy and method of managing security programmes through the use of traditional risk principles. As a philosophy and life cycle, ESRM is focused on creating a business partnership between security practitioners and business leaders to more effectively provide protection against security risks in line with acceptable risk tolerances as defined by business asset owners and stakeholders. This paper explores the basics of the ESRM philosophy and life cycle and also shows how embracing the ESRM philosophy and implementing a risk-based securit

Collaborative Learning in Higher Education: Evoking Positive Interdependence.

Collaborative learning is a widely used instructional method, but the learning potential of this instructional method is often underused in practice. Therefore, the importance of various factors underlying effective collaborative learning should be determined. In the current study, five different life sciences undergraduate courses with successful collaborative-learning results were selected. This study focuses on factors that increased the effectiveness of collaboration in these courses, according to the students. Nine focus group interviews were conducted and analyzed. Results show that fact

"Why am I so stuck?": A Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment Case Discussion.

Assessors from 3 continents worked together on a single multimethod case study. Their goal was to hold the client at the center and forefront of their attitudes and thinking as each assessor focused on a specific measure or group of measures. The adult client requested a neuropsychological assessment and completed a full battery of cognitive measures as well as the MMPI-2, the Rorschach, and the Wartegg. A basic tenet of collaborative/therapeutic assessment holds that the client is a full partner in the assessment process; he or she is also seen as the final arbiter of the usefulness of the id

Nurses and Psychologists Advancing the Patient-Centered Medical Home Model.

As America experiences the largest health care revolution of the past 50 years, clinicians and administrators are refocusing their attention on the goals of the Quadruple Aim. Motivation and capabilities among stakeholders vary as practical tools and an adequate workforce remain elusive. At the same time, the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model is spreading rapidly but demonstrating variable results. Positive PCMH outcomes seem to reflect high-quality teamwork. A primary care physician shortage is looming, and increasing numbers of health professionals are being pushed into the PCMH, ma

Guidelines for the statistical analysis of a collaborative study of a laboratory method for testing disinfectant product performance.

This paper presents statistical techniques suitable for analyzing a collaborative study (multilaboratory study or ring trial) of a laboratory disinfectant product performance test (DPPT) method. Emphasis is on the assessment of the repeatability, reproducibility, resemblance, and responsiveness of the DPPT method. The suggested statistical techniques are easily modified for application to a single laboratory study. The presentation includes descriptions of the plots and tables that should be constructed during initial examination of the data, including a discussion of outliers and QA checks. T

The tools of cooperation and change.

Employers can choose from lots of tools when they want to encourage employees to work together toward a new corporate goal. One of the rarest managerial skills is the ability to understand which tools will work in a given situation and which will misfire. Cooperation tools fall into four major categories: power, management, leadership, and culture. Choosing the right tool, say the authors, requires assessing the organization along two critical dimensions: the extent to which people agree on what they want and the extent to which they agree on cause and effect, or how to get what they want. The

Success in the schools: bringing it all together.

Children who stutter can successfully be treated in the schools. This has been the overriding message of the articles in this two-part series in Seminars in Speech and Language, which focuses on school-age children who stutter. This summary article reviews several of the key themes presented in the articles in this series and highlights the importance of taking a broad-based view of the disorder in working with children who stutter. The article ends with a series of reminders for clinicians to consider that will help school-age children who stutter achieve optimal success in treatment.

[Anxious School Absenteeism: Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of School Phobia at a Psychological Counseling Center].

Resulting from a shortage of possibilities in the ambulant treatment of school phobia behavior-therapeutic interventions were established at a psychological counseling center for families twenty years ago, which have been in existence to this day. The criteria of anxiety-based absenteeism as well as problems of terminology and classification will be presented with emphasis on school phobia as a combination of separation anxiety and social anxiety ("Schulphobie"). The multimodal treatment focuses on cognitive interventions, graduated exposition and close cooperation with teachers. The counselor

Risk factors for dental anxiety and cooperativeness in pediatric patients with or without oral habits (bruxism, nail biting, and thumb sucking).

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety and fear can deter patients from visiting dentists and can deteriorate their oral health. In children, this can also affect their cooperativeness. No studies exist on potential links between oral habits and dental fear and children's cooperation. Moreover, predictors of dental anxiety and patient cooperativeness are controversial. Therefore, this study was conducted with the objectives of (1) evaluating associations between oral habits and children's dental fear and cooperativeness as well as (2) potential risk factors of dental anxiety, cooperation, and oral habits. Higher Order Cooperativity Emerging from the Helicoidal Growth of Curved Supramolecular Polymers.

Biological supramolecular assemblies harness the cooperative action of multiple noncovalent interactions to achieve high degrees of structural order and functional complexity. For instance, microtubules, biological supramolecular polymers, stabilize their tubular architecture through a synergetic interplay between longitudinal interactions along the tubular axis and lateral interactions between adjacent helicoidal loops. In contrast, synthetic supramolecular polymers have rarely demonstrated such cooperative behavior emerging from higher order structures of self-assembled architectures. Herein…

Children's Responses to Sensory Stimuli and their Behavior in the Dental Office.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate children's behavior during dental examinations, their reactions to various selected sensory stimuli and the association between them. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-three children (28 boys and 35 girls) aged 5-12 years (mean age 7.9 ± 1.6 years) participated in the study. Their parents were asked to complete a questionnaire while in the dentist's waiting room. The dentists evaluated the children's behavior in the dental office using Frankl's behavioral scale and noted the children's reactions to the sensory stimuli of touch, noise, smell and backward tilting of the examination ch
