Suicidal behavior is associated with reduced corpus callosum area.

BACKGROUND: Corpus callosum (CC) size has been associated with cognitive and emotional deficits in a range of neuropsychiatric and mood disorders. As such deficits are also found in suicidal behavior, we investigated specifically the association between CC atrophy and suicidal behavior. METHODS: We studied 435 right-handed individuals without dementia from a cohort of community-dwelling persons aged 65 years and over (the ESPRIT study). They were divided in three groups: suicide attempters (n = 21), affective control subjects (AC) (n = 180) without history of suicide attempt but with a histor…

Abnormal corpus callosum in neonates after hypoxic-ischemic injury.

BACKGROUND: Literature regarding callosal injury after hypoxic-ischemic injury (HII) is scant. OBJECTIVE: To present the MRI and US findings of callosal injury after HII. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI and US studies of 76 neonates were evaluated for HII and 53 were considered positive. RESULTS: Of the 53 neonates with HII, 40 demonstrated restricted diffusion on DWI; of these, 30 revealed callosal involvement. Nine of the 13 neonates with normal DWI, whose routine MRI images were compatible with HII, were imaged after 1 week of age. Five out of ten neonates imaged during the 1st week of life w

Electroconvulsive therapy and corpus callosum aplasia: a case report.

The use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in mental retardation has been discussed in several case reports and case series. In this case, a 35-year-old patient with corpus callosum aplasia and severe therapy-resistant catatonia was treated with a series of unilateral ECT and improved considerably. Electroencephalographic recordings during ECT showed a complete interhemispheric synchronicity due to regular anterior and posterior commissural fibers. After ECT, the patient received long-term medication with quetiapine and lorazepam. Electroconvulsive therapy turned out to be a powerful tool for …

Congenital cystic eye with corpus callosum hypoplasia: MRI findings.

Congenital cystic eye is an extremely rare congenital anomaly with fewer than 40 cases reported. Although its aetiology remains unknown, it results from partial to complete failure in invagination of the primary optic vesicle. It is usually unilateral and presents as a heterogeneous lesion with a cyst bulging the upper eyelid and a solid component consisting in neuroglial tissue. We describe a rare case of congenital cystic eye with corpus callosum hypoplasia with special focus on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and their role in the diagnosis. We conclude that MRI is not only us…

Corpus callosum: normal imaging appearance, variants and pathologic conditions.

Various types of lesions can occur within the corpus callosum (CC) which is a white matter tract communicating corresponding regions of the cerebral hemispheres. Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice for the evaluation of the CC. In addition, diffusion weighted imaging and diffusion tensor imaging can provide additional information about the CC. The aim of this study is to illustrate the imaging features of the corpus callosum and its pathologies.

Smaller corpus callosum subregions containing motor fibers in schizophrenia.

Neuropsychological and neurophysiological studies provide evidence for abnormal interhemispheric communication in schizophrenia. These abnormalities may have a substrate in structural irregularities of the corpus callosum. This study investigated schizophrenia patients (n=27) and healthy comparison subjects (n=31). Global and regional measurements of the corpus callosum were acquired from one midsagittal SPGR slice. Eight subregions were approximately matched to fiber pathways from cortical regions. Overall effects of diagnosis [Wilks' Lambda F(8,46)=2.45, p=0.03] and diagnosis by age interact…

[Corpus callosum, interhemispheric interaction and brain right hemisphere function].

A complex clinico-neuropsychological study, using A.R. Luria's method, has been conducted before and after surgery in 36 patients with arteriovenous malformations of the corpus callosum. Symptoms of local lesions in different compartments of the corpus callosum are described. The symptoms of the partial corpus callosum lesion are shown to be modally specific, but only to a certain extent. Isolated appearance of dyscopia or dysgraphia or symptoms is possible. A combination of lesions in the medial brain areas (cingulated gyrus, frontal lobes) with corpus callosum malformation significantly augm…

Anatomical MRI study of corpus callosum in unipolar depression.

Previous studies have suggested abnormal cerebral lateralization in major depressive disorder (MDD). Few controlled MRI studies have investigated the corpus callosum (CC), the largest commissura connecting the two cerebral hemispheres, in MDD. This study investigated anatomical abnormalities in the CC and its subdivisions in MDD patients. Twenty-two unmedicated MDD patients and 39 healthy subjects underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Measurements of the CC and its sub-regions were performed with a semi-automated software (NIH Image, version 1.62). ANCOVA with age, gender, and intr…

Asynchronous pentobarbital-induced burst suppression with corpus callosum hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the electroencephalographic (EEG) findings in a 9-year-old girl, who presented with generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus requiring pentobarbital anesthesia, and correlate these findings with clinicoradiologic evidence of a ruptured AVM with hemorrhage into the body of the corpus callosum. METHODS: EEG analysis accompanied by clinical assessment, CT and MRI scans, and cerebral angiography were performed. RESULTS: With pentobarbital coma, the EEG showed burst suppression with prominent interhemispheric asynchrony. Suppression epochs >2 s in duration and with ampli…

Scalloping deformity of the corpus callosum following ventricular shunting.

PURPOSE: To describe six patients who underwent ventriculoperitoneal (V-P) shunting for hydrocephalus and developed scalloping deformity of the dorsal surface of the corpus callosum, and to evaluate the cause and frequency of this phenomenon. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images of 35 patients whose hydrocephalus was successfully corrected by V-P shunting were studied. To elucidate the possible anatomic basis for the scalloping deformity, gross examination of the corpus callosum relative to the adjacent anatomical structures was performed using autopsy specimens. RESULTS: Of the 35 patients who …

[Lipoma of corpus callosum with callosal agenesis (author's transl)].

Intracranial lipoma is rare. The case reported here was a woman aged 60. She came to our hospital with complaint of headache. Neurological examination was negative. Plain craniogram showed abnormal calcification in the callosal region. A-P view of right carotid angiogram revealed winding sinous course of bilateral anterior cerebral arteries around the calcific deposit. Lateral view showed vertical stretching of ascending portion of the anterior cerebral artery. In the frontal projection of the pneumogram, the lateral ventricles were separated and concave medially with hornlike superior angles.

A causal role for the posterior corpus callosum in bimanual coordination.

Interareal communication is crucial for coordinated brain function. Given the largely contralateral organization of the brain, bimanual coordination likely depends on interactions across the two cerebral hemispheres for motor planning and execution. The parietal reach region (PRR) is an early node in the sensorimotor transformation stream. Here, we examined the contributions of direct callosal connections between left and right PRR to bimanual coordination. Using manganese-enhanced MRI, we traced callosal pathways crossing the midline and found that PRR-PRR connections are restricted to the sp

Multidisciplinary management of agenesis of corpus callosum: a narrative review.

The corpus callosum (CC) is the most significant of the three cerebral commissures that join the human left and right hemispheres. Numerous vascular, chemical, genetic, and metabolic disturbances can impede the growth of the CC. Complete agenesis of the CC is the most prevalent abnormality. As a result of improvements in our knowledge and advancements in ultrasonography technology, an increasing number of congenital CC abnormalities have been identified. Prenatal magnetic resonance imaging is crucial to identify related central nervous system abnormalities. Counseling about the postnatal resul…

Structural Alterations of the Corpus Callosum in Children With Infantile Hydrocephalus.

This study investigates structural alterations of the corpus callosum in children diagnosed with infantile hydrocephalus. We aim to assess both macrostructural (volume) and microstructural (diffusion tensor imaging metrics) facets of the corpus callosum, providing insights into the nature and extent of alterations associated with this condition. Eighteen patients with infantile hydrocephalus (mean age = 9 years) and 18 age- and sex-matched typically developing healthy children participated in the study. Structural magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging were used to assess corp…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: What to tell expecting parents?

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is one of the most common brain malformations, with an incidence estimated to range from 0.5 to 70 in 10,000 among the general population. Prenatal diagnosis is made via ultrasound; however, fetal MRI is useful to confirm or exclude the presence of associated cerebral abnormalities-mostly cortical malformations-that may affect postnatal prognosis. When no additional central nervous system (CNS) or extra CNS anomalies are identified and no genetic cause is found, an isolated ACC is diagnosed. Overall, in cases of ACC, an underlying genetic cause can be iden…
