Surgical Site Infection by Corynebacterium macginleyi in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Corynebacterium (C.) macginleyi is a gram positive, lipophilic rod, usually considered a colonizer of skin and mucosal surfaces. Several reports have associated C. macginleyi with ocular infections, such as conjunctivitis and endophthalmitis. However, even if rare, extraocular infections from C. macginleyi may occur, especially among immunocompromised patients and patients with indwelling medical devices. We report herein the first case of surgical site infection by C. macginleyi after orthopaedic surgery for the correction of kyphoscoliosis in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1. Our pati…

Diphtheria in the United Kingdom, 1986-2008: the increasing role of Corynebacterium ulcerans.

Diphtheria is an uncommon disease in the UK due to an effective immunization programme; consequently when cases do arise, there can be delays in diagnosis and case-fatality rates remain high. We reviewed 102 patients with infections caused by toxigenic corynebacteria (an average of four per year) reported in the UK between 1986 and 2008: 42 Corynebacterium diphtheriae, 59 C. ulcerans and one C. pseudotuberculosis, as well as 23 asymptomatic carriers. Five fatalities were reported, all in unvaccinated patients. The major risk factor for C. diphtheriae infection continued to be travel to an ende…

Corynebacterium septic arthritis of the knee presenting as a ruptured septic popliteal cyst.

A rare case of a septic knee arthritis presenting as an infected ruptured popliteal cyst is described. Infection of a popliteal cyst is an uncommon complication of septic arthritis and presentation can mimic that of an acute deep vein thrombosis, leading to delay in diagnosis and treatment. Of interest, the typical hallmarks of infection and haematological markers of inflammation were all unremarkable in the current case. This case was of additional interest in that there have been no reports in the literature of Corynebacterium spp. being isolated from an infected popliteal cyst. Invasive inf…

Multiple abscesses caused by Salmonella enterica and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis in a dromedary camel.

A rare case of arthritis, peri-arthiritis and pleurits associated with Salmonella enterica and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection in a dromedary camel is reported. Articular infections caused by Non-typhoidal Salmonella have been exceptionally described in human medicine. To our knowledge, this would be the first description of articular infections associated with Non-thyphoidal Salmonella in other mammals than humans. Possible pathogenesis of the infection is discussed.

Corynebacterium ulcerans infection of the lung mimicking the histology of Churg-Strauss syndrome.

We report the first case of pulmonary Corynebacterium ulcerans infection mimicking Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS). Productive cough, fever, general fatigue, and weight loss developed in a 50-year-old man. Laboratory data revealed prominent eosinophilia and elevated serum IgE. On chest images, multiple nodules and cavities were predominantly detected in the right lung. Histopathologic examination showed necrotizing granulomas and vasculitis with massive eosinophilic infiltration identical to the findings seen in CSS; however, clusters of Gram-positive, coryneform rods were observed in the alveola…

Mycobacterium chelonei masquerading as Corynebacterium in a case of infectious keratitis: a diagnostic dilemma.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of Mycobacterium keratitis can often be missed both clinically and microbiologically and this report highlights one such case. METHODS: Review of medical and microbiological records. RESULTS: We report a case of Mycobacterium keratitis in a 25-year-old man that was misdiagnosed as Corynebacterium keratitis at initial presentation. Presence of partially stained and beaded bacilli in a Gram-stained smear of repeat corneal scrapings raised the suspicion of an unusual organism. Ziehl-Neelsen staining of the decolorized Gram-stained smear and subculture on Löwenstein-Jensen…

A necrotic soft-tissue lesion due to Corynebacterium urealyticum in a neutropenic child.

Corynebacterium urealyticum has been associated mainly with infections of the urinary tract. Other infections due to this organism are highly unusual. We report what we believe is the first case of necrotic infection of soft tissue due to C. urealyticum in a neutropenic child who was previously treated with chemotherapy. The infection was cured when the patient was treated with vancomycin and surgical debridement. The increase in the number of neutrophils may also have contributed to the patient's recovery.

An atypical case of Corynebacterium diphtheriae endocarditis and subsequent outbreak control measures.

An atypical case of Corynebacterium diphtheriae endocarditis with severe rhabdomyolysis and cerebral emboli is presented. The patient underwent successful mitral and aortic valve replacements and is only the third reported case with a successful outcome following surgery. Outbreak control measures were complicated by an equivocal result from guinea pig toxin tests.

The influence of Propionibacterium acnes (Corynebacterium parvum) fractions on immune response in vivo.

Bacterin of Propionibacterium acnes (Corynebacterium parvum), its cellular fractions (lipids, fractions obtained by mechanical disruption and differential centrifugation, by phenol-water and pyridine extractions), and a polysaccharide from culture filtrate were prepared and tested in mice. The activation of RES by splenomegaly and hepatomegaly, prevention of listerial infection, prevention of the lethal effect of sarcoma 180, and depression of liver microsomal cytochrome P-450 were employed. The bacterin was effective in all tests. Lipid-free cells were less active, in particular in the activa…

[Endocarditis caused by non-diphtheriae Corynebacterium. Presentation of 12 cases and review].

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium is known as a pathogen for man, particularly C. diphtheriae, while other species may cause disease and particularly cardiac valve infection, mainly in immunosuppressed patients, intravenous drug addicts, valve prosthesis carriers, patients with previous valvular disease, with congenital heart diseases or those submitted to cardiothoracic surgery. METHODS: Seven episodes of endocarditis due to Corynebacterium no diphtheriae among six patients admitted to our hospital between 1989 and 1992 are analyzed. RESULTS: The mitral valve was often affected with a predominanc…

[Anatomical study of the fibrosing action of Corynebacterium parvum in malignant pleural effusion].

Intrapleural injection of Corynebacterium parvum (CBP) has recently been used for the treatment of recurrent neoplastic pleural effusions and its mechanism of action has been suggested to be either a local fibrosis-stimulating effect or immunostimulation. The case is reported of a patient with pleuritis secondary to metastases of mammary carcinoma, treated with CBP plus methylprednisolone, who died five days after the treatment because of an acute myocardial infarction. The pathologic examination showed fibrinous pleuritis with an interconnecting network between the visceral and parietal pleur…

Corynebacterium group JK in a hematological ward: infections, colonization and environmental contamination.

Because 2 patients with acute leukemia expired in septicemia with multiresistant Corynebacterium group JK (JK) the occurrence and significance of these bacteria in a hematological ward was analysed. During the following year JK was isolated in 6 other patients with acute leukemia, in 5 as a colonizing agent and in 1 as cause of an anorectal abscess. The environmental investigation with cultures from all patients, personnel and rooms in the ward disclosed heavy contamination with JK in 2 isolation rooms housing JK-colonized patients. Contamination with JK in other rooms was very sparse and ther…

The pathology of experimental Corynebacterium equi infection in foals following intragastric challenge.

The intragastric inoculation of a suspension of Corynebacterium equi on five consecutive days induced severe ulcerative colitis, typhlitis, and lymphadenitis of colonic and cecal nodes in two ponies necropsied three weeks after infection. No gross lesions were observed in two ponies necropsied ten days after infection. A single inoculum of equivalent size failed to induce gross lesions in four ponies killed at ten or 20 days after infection. Microscopic lesions consistent with early C. equi infection of Peyer's patches were seen in two of the ponies killed ten days after infection. Only one sm…

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and its deficiency in mutants of Corynebacterium glutamicum.

Corynebacterium glutamicum is a member of a group of taxonomically related glutamate-excreting bacteria which utilize glucose both by the Embden-Meyerhof and the pentose phosphate pathways, the latter sequence accounting for 10 to 38% of the glucose metabolized. Some of the properties of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in crude extracts of C. glutamicum were studied. The enzyme was rapidly inactivated by dilution in tris (hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-hydrochloride buffer. This inactivation was prevented by the presence of 0.45 m NaCl. Mg(++) was required for enzyme activity, but Mn(++), Ca(++)…

The MscS channel from Corynebacterium glutamicum uses a non-canonical gating mechanism.

The function and gating mechanism of Escherichia coli mechanosensitive channel of small conductance (EcMscS) is well understood, but it is unknown whether MscS homologs in other bacteria function the same way. Here, we show that the MscS homolog from Corynebacterium glutamicum (CgMscS) opens at a much higher membrane tension than EcMscS but has otherwise similar functional characteristics. CgMscS is also structurally similar to EcMscS but features an extended transmembrane (TM) helix 2 that forms salt bridges with the cytoplasmic cage. Compared to the closed conformation, the TM1-2 sensor padd…
