Laryngeal manifestation of allergy though less common than, Rhinosinusitis, tubotympanitis and bronchopulmanary allergy but it is not that uncommon which is usually misdiagnosed and mistreated in children. Hence the importance of larynx as the allergic shock organ in children with spasmodic croup and laryngotracheo bronchits. In the present study in children bellow five years, presenting with stridor and/or hoarsness were evaluated regarding the history of allergy, direct laryngoscopic finding, mesurement of serum 1 g E. Presence of eosinophilia and histopathological examination of laryngeal b…

The development of diphtheria is characterized by a pronounced local process, but the description of local changes in the disease are based only on postmortem findings. 67 patients with different forms of diphtheria were examined. In 11 cases of descending croup bronchoscopic examination was carried out. As revealed in this study, at the primary stage of the disease films cover the whole of the air duct system, and the process is identical to that on tonsils. In the course of convalescence and under the action of specific antiserum films on the tonsils, the soft palate and the vocal cords disa…

In the evaluation of a patient for cosmetic surgery, an underlying congenital origin for the deformities noted, with possible expression in multiple organ systems, should always be considered. In this case, a 19-year-old woman requesting rhinoplasty exhibited facial anomalies: lack of quadrangular and lower lateral cartilages, small bony dorsum, underdeveloped aural cartilage, and infantile larynx and trachea. Otherwise healthy, she recalled having recurrent bouts of croup until she was 15 years old, exercise limitation secondary to stridor, and a family history of nasal hypoplasia. Genetic re…

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an important global public health concern in adults and children. Laryngotracheobronchitis (croup) is a common acute respiratory infection (ARI) among children, most often caused by a virus, and should not be treated with antibiotics. Reducing the usage of unnecessary antibiotics in ARI using an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) is an effective measure against AMR in children. This study investigates the antibiotic prescription pattern in pediatric patients with laryngotracheobronchitis in Korea. Our results will be useful to improve the ASP.…

BACKGROUND: The article presents a case report of subacute epiglottitis in a healthy three-year-old child, secondary to Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection. This case is particularly significant as EBV-related epiglottitis is extremely rare, with only one prior reported case in a pediatric patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy three-year-old boy developed fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, initially diagnosed as croup but worsened, leading to hospital admission with respiratory distress, odynophagia and dysphagia. He had a hoarse voice, inspiratory stridor, swollen neck lymph n…

BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) mainly presents with lower respiratory tract symptoms. On the other hand, laryngotracheitis or croup shows barky cough and it is rare in adults. There were no reports of laryngotracheitis with COVID-19 in pregnant women. We report the case of a pregnant woman at 24 weeks of gestation presenting with acute laryngotracheitis and COVID-19 due to the R.1 variant of SARS-CoV-2. CASE REPORT A 29-year-old previously healthy woman at 24 weeks of gestat…

OBJECTIVES: Prehospital recognition of upper versus lower airway disease in infants or young children is critical as management strategies differ. A minimal amount is known regarding how well these distinctions are made in the field and whether they are associated with changes in care. We describe patient characteristics, emergency medical services (EMS) clinician impressions, assessments, and prehospital treatments for patients under 3 years old who were diagnosed in the emergency department (ED) with upper airway disease (croup) or lower airway disease (acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or as…

Subglottic laryngitis (croup) is a common disease in children. Its etiology is not quite clear. Thirty children (28 boys and 2 girls), aged between 4 months and up to 5 years (mean 3.6 years), have been hospitalized for the inflammatory swelling of the subglottic space. Laboratory and allergy tests, including: immunoglobulins A, G, M, total IgE, specific IgE blood levels, blood T cell level, and NBT test have been carried out in all children. An increased IgE blood level have been noted in 15 (50%) children, and significantly increased blood level of specific IgE in 10 (33%) children of this s…

Congenital vallecular cyst is one of the rare etiologies of upper airway obstruction. Due to the scarcity of literature review, the exact in … uction, it is crucial to consider not only common causes like foreign body, acute epiglottitis, and croup, but also rare factors such as laryngeal cysts.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the recently identified human metapneumovirus (HMPV), and the human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs), cause most cases of childhood croup, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Influenza virus also causes a significant burden of disease in young children, although its significance in children was not fully recognized until recently. This article discusses pathogens that have been studied for several decades, including RSV and HPIVs, and also explores the newly identified viral pathogens HMPV and human coronavirus NL63. The escalating rate of emergence of new infectious …

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a newly identified paramyxovirus that appears to be one of the most significant and common viral infections in humans. The virus, first isolated in 2001, is a clear cause of lower respiratory tract disease in both the very young and the frail elderly. The virus causes acute wheezing in children or, less commonly, croup or pneumonia.
METHODS/RESULTS: Molecular epidemiology studies have shown that field strains exhibit sufficient sequence diversity to designate 2 subgroups of circulating viruses. Small animal and nonhuman primate models of infection h…
