Cryosurgical treatment of sacrococcygeal chordoma. Report of four cases.

Sacrococcygeal chordoma is a rare malignant neoplasm situated in a location adjacent to important structures. Distant metastases are usually rare and occur late. The treatment of choice usually consists of radical surgery, sometimes followed by radiotherapy. Extensive surgical resection is difficult and often causes bladder and/or bowel dysfunction, and the local recurrence rate remains high. In an attempt to diminish both risks, the authors introduced cryosurgery in situ as a new treatment modality for chordoma in the sacrococcygeal region. From 1974 to 1980, four patients (two male, two fema

Successful treatment of pyogenic granuloma with injection of absolute ethanol.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a small, almost always solitary, sessile or pedunculated, raspberry-like vegetation of exuberant granulation tissue. Conservative treatment by techniques such as cryosurgery, laser surgery, and electrodesiccation are usually adequate, whereas excisional treatment can often result in noticeable scars. We attempted a different approach using an injection of absolute ethanol in five patients with recurrence due to inadequate cryosurgery. This therapy is less invasive than surgical excision and appears to be an alternative therapy for PG.

Cryosurgical treatment of cancerous and noncancerous diseases of dogs, horses, and cats.

Cryosurgery was used to treat a variety of cancerous and noncancerous diseases in dogs, horses, and cats. Follow-up evaluation on 52 animals revealed an overall "no recurrence" rate of 61%. Among the animals with no recurrence were 12 of 17 with cutaneous lesions and 5 of 8 (horses) with sarcoids. Seven of 10 dogs with anal fistulas healed after cryosurgery, but 2 had recurrence of the disease. Treatment of invasive neoplasms of the oral and nasal cavities was not successful. Side effects and complications were minimal.

[Cryotherapy combined with local spraying of isoniazid for the treatment of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis: a case report].

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis refers to the tuberculosis in the nasopharynx, which is mainly treated with systemic chemotherapy with anti-tuberculosis drugs. Here, we reported a case of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis treated by cryosurgery combined with local spraying of isoniazid on the basis of systemic chemotherapy with anti-tuberculosis drugs. By reviewing the case data and relevant literature, we understood the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the disease, improved everyone's understanding of the disease, and proposed a new method of cryosurgery combined with lo

Cryosurgical treatment of the lymphoid tissue of Waldeyer's ring.

The role of cryosurgery in the treatment of tonsil disease is an unresolved issue. Initial favorable reports failed to provide the necessary incentives for larger well-controlled studies. Bacteriologic and immunologic response to the cryosurgical treatment of tonsils remains unclear. Without appropriate studies, cryosurgery has been relegated to a backup status for conventional tonsil surgery. At present, cryogenic treatment of lymphoid tissue is generally limited to tonsillectomy in patients with blood dyscrasias; elimination of palatine tonsil regrowth and posterior pharyngeal lymphoid hyper

Cryosurgical treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

This report describes 354 patients treated with cryosurgery for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) over an 8-year period. Colposcopic criteria were used to select treatable patients and to perform colposcopically directed biopsies. Treatment failures occurred in 6.2% of 298 patients treated for CIN I and II lesions. Of patients treated for carcinoma in situ, 39% demonstrated persistence of this lesion. Based on this clinical experience, cryosurgery is no longer acceptable for the treatment of severe dysplasia or cervical carcinoma in situ.

Cryosurgical treatment of endolymphatic hydrops.

Cryosurgery of the labyrinth, as a treatment of endolymphatic hydrops, was initially greeted with considerable enthusiasm, but has lately received little publicity. That it still has a valuable role is demonstrated by this study of 69 patients who underwent labyrinthine cryosurgery over a 16 year period. Complete relief from vertigo has been achieved in 71 per cent of cases and morbidity has been minimized by the precautions outlined. The literature is reviewed to demonstrate the superiority of the transmastoid approach, the evolution of the technique and experimental evidence for the supposed

A Review of Immunocryosurgery and a Practical Guide to Its Applications.

Immunocryosurgery is a minimally invasive combinational therapeutic procedure that has been designed, developed, and evaluated in the Dermatology Department of the University of Ioannina from 2004. In a fixed time protocol, this approach combines immune stimulatory therapy with imiquimod and cryosurgery, i.e., cryosurgery is applied during continuous imiquimod treatment. Laboratory findings in tissue and blood level credit the efficacy to the synergy of imiquimod and cryosurgery. The synergy has been established through clinical trials and the excellent feasibility and efficacy demonstrated in

[Beneficial effects of cryosurgical treatment in benign and low-grade-malignant bone tumors in 120 patients].

BACKGROUND: Benign and low-grade malignant bone tumours are generally treated with intralesional curettage. At microscopic level tumour cells are left behind and may be responsible for a recurrence. Therefore adjuvant local treatment is necessary. METHOD: By spraying liquid nitrogen into the remaining cavity, tumour cells are frozen very rapidly. Ice crystals formed in the (tumour) cell will mechanically damage the cell resulting in cell necrosis. This combined treatment of surgery and freezing is called cryosurgery. RESULTS: In 120 patients with a follow-up of at least 1 year the treatment

[Technique and results of cryo-stripping in the treatment of varicose veins of the lower limbs].

UNLABELLED: Stripping of varicose veins, a reference method, causes postoperative pain and sometimes dysesthesia due to saphenous nerve damage. Ankle wound healing is sometimes painful and often unaesthetic. Invaginated stripping eliminates some of the drawbacks, but keeps the lower wound and must be left in the case of recurrent saphenous rupture. Those two techniques do not allow total saphenous resection in the case of infected ulcers. Cryosurgery can be used regardless of the state of the ankle skin. It allows a complete invaginated stripping without ankle wound. METHODS: Over a 9-year pe

Cryosurgical modification of retrograde atrioventricular conduction. Implications for the surgical treatment of atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia.

Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia resulting from atrioventricular nodal reentry is a common arrhythmia that usually responds to medical therapy. When atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia is refractory to medical therapy, cryoablation or endocardial catheter ablation of the His bundle has been employed to protect the ventricles from the tachycardia. However, these techniques necessitate implantation of a permanent ventricular pacemaker. Consensual accommodation.

Consensual accommodation, like other consensual responses, may be a useful diagnostic indicator. The consensual interocular lag (direct accommodative response minus consensual accommodative response) was measured under a variety of accommodative conditions in four normal subjects, one of whom later underwent cryosurgery for a retinal tear. There was no consensual interocular lag when subjects were orthophoric , but when slightly exophoric at near distances a small lag does occur. A subject with large exophorias at near showed a more complex accommodative pattern. The consensual interocular lag

Papillomas of the larynx and pharynx: two case reports.

Two unusual cases of papillomas are presented: the first is that of a young boy with extensive papillomas of the larynx who was treated successfully without tracheotomy using endolaryngeal surgery and steroids at the time of each procedure. This case adds to the clinical evidence that the most probable cause of juvenile papillomas is a virus, since the mother had condyloma acuminata during pregnancy and at term. The second case is that of a young girl with rapidly recurring papillomas of the mouth and pharynx who was treated successfully with an autogenous vaccine and cryosurgery after other m

Reflectance confocal microscopy for the evaluation of acute epidermal wound healing.

The dynamic process of wound healing is routinely evaluated by clinical or histological evaluation. Recently, a number of non-invasive imaging techniques have been evaluated for their clinical applicability in dermatology. Among them, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) represents a non-invasive imaging technique that allows the in vivo characterization of the skin at near-histological resolution. The aim of this study was to monitor epidermal wound repair using RCM in a model of tissue damage induced by cryosurgery. For this purpose, contact cryosurgery was performed at -32 °C for 10 second

In vitro and in vivo assessment of urethral warming catheters for the transperineal cryoablation of prostatic carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the two most common urethral warming catheters currently available for their effectiveness in preventing urethral injury in an animal model and thus during transperineal cryosurgery for the treatment of prostate cancer. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: The warming efficiency of the variable-diameter thin latex-balloon catheter (Cook, Australia) and the fixed-diameter PVC catheter (Candela, USA) were evaluated in a water-bath. A sheep model was then used for subsequent experiments to further evaluate the better catheter. The technique used for the insertion of the Cook c

Cryosurgical treatment of professional chronic radiodermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic x-ray dermatitis in professionals is a frequent problem for doctors in our country due to the fact that many of them widely used radiotherapy without any protection 15-20 years ago. Surgery has been the most accepted treatment, though it generally decreases hand function. OBJECTIVE: Up to now, cryosurgery was not usually considered as a possible treatment if the lesions were located on fingers. In this study, the advantages of cryosurgery for the treatment of professional chronic radiodermatitis with incipient pretumoral lesions are emphasized. METHODS: Cryosurgery was pe

Destruction and regeneration of jawbone after cryogenic application. An experimental study.

On 13 rabbits part of the lateral aspect of the jawbone was frozen with liquid nitrogen in two sessions. The animals were sacrificed 2, 4, 12 and 24 weeks after the cryosurgery. The specimens were analyzed with microangiography according to the Spalteholz technique and with light microscopy. The whole width of the lateral cortex, measuring around 3 mm, was subject to bone destruction two weeks after cryosurgery. New bone formation, on the other hand, was evident in the frozen area and on the undamaged periosteum some distance from the lesion. The same area, 12 weeks after the injury, was compl
