Antiandrogens have been found to be effective in the treatment of acne and hirsutism. Cyproterone acetate has been used in Europe for many years, but in the United States it has only been approved as an orphan drug to treat severe hirsutism. Spironolactone is approved in the United States for its antialdosterone effect but not for its antiandrogenic effect, although it is widely used for the latter purpose. While cyproterone is a more effective drug than spironolactone, it is more likely to produce undesirable side effects.

OBJECTIVES: The antischistosomal properties of the marketed antiandrogens bicalutamide, flutamide, nilutamide and cyproterone acetate were studied both in vivo and in vitro.
METHODS: Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice were treated orally with 50-400 mg/kg of the antiandrogens 3 and 7 weeks post-infection. INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urinary glycosaminoglycans (uGAG) have protective effects against urinary tract disorders. Here we investigated whether oral hormonal contraceptives (OC) affect uGAG excretion.

Hirsutism is the transformation of fine vellus hair to visible, thickened terminal hair under androgenic stimulus. The most common causes of hirsutism are familial, idiopathic or polycystic ovarian disease. Patient distress is the prime indication for therapy. Drug treatment should be continued for 12 months before assessing response. Spironolactone is generally the drug tried first. Ovarian hormones, e.g. medroxyprogesterone acetate plus ethinylestradiol, or cyproterone acetate plus ethinylestradiol may be added if response is inadequate.
