West Nile virus serosurveillance in Iowa white-tailed deer (1999-2003).

Sera from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were collected in Iowa during the winter months (1999-2003), 2 years before and after West Nile virus (WNV) was first reported in Iowa (2001), and were analyzed for antibodies to WNV. Samples from 1999 to 2001 were antibody negative by blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bELISA) and plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT(90)). Prevalence derived from bELISA (2002, 12.7%; 2003, 11.2%) and WNV PRNT(90) (2002, 7.9%; 2003, 8.5%) assays were similar. All samples were negative for antibodies against St. Louis encephalitis virus as dete…

Welfare of farmed deer in New Zealand. 2. Velvet antler removal.

This paper reviews published data on welfare aspects of stag restraint and velvet antler removal, and prevention of antler growth. Several studies of physical restraint and handling demonstrate behavioural and physiological changes both during and after velvet antler removal. Interpretations vary as to whether the act of velvet antler removal imposes a welfare cost additional to that of handling and restraint alone. Chemical restraint presents immediate and delayed welfare risks to the animal. Surgical removal of velvet antler can be achieved without acute pain using a high dose rate of local

Serosurvey for selected disease agents in white-tailed deer from Mexico.

Serum samples from 350 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus texanus) collected in March 1994 from northeastern Mexico were tested for the prevalence of antibody activity against five infectious diseases of ruminants. The prevalence rate was 81% for bluetongue virus (BTV) of all serotypes, 72% for epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), 3% for Borrelia burgdorferi, 69% for Anaplasma marginale, and 0% for Brucella abortus, B. melitensis, and B. ovis. These are diseases that affect domestic ruminants, and deer may act as a reservoir of infection. In addition, if deer are translocated, th…

Listeria monocytogenes subtypes associated with mortality among fallow deer (Dama dama).

Different subtypes of Listeria monocytogenes were isolated from various animal and environmental samples during an episode of increased mortality on a fallow deer (Dama dama) farm. During a 4-wk period, six fallow deer died, including four does, one fawn, and one adult buck. Prior to death, one of the does had exhibited central nervous system signs characteristic of listeriosis. Postmortem examination of the six deer showed no histologic changes typical of listeriosis, although inflammatory changes were present in several organs. Different subtypes of L. monocytogenes were isolated from brain …

Serological activity of white-tail deer against several species of Brucella.

In Mexico, brucellosis is a widely distributed disease of domesticated ruminants, but its frequency in wild ruminants has not been documented. Since northeast Mexico is the main distribution area of white-tailed deer and has been reported as an area positive for brucellosis in domesticated species, the present study was conducted in order to determine serological activity against several species of the genus Brucella in white-tailed deer. A total of 208 sera of white-tailed deer were collected during the springs of 1994 and 1995 in the north part of the states of Nuevo León and Coahuila. Each …

Ultrastructure of hepatocytes in copper-deficient Sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck).

The livers of 13 Sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck) aged 4 to 9 years and suffering from copper deficiency (enzootic ataxia) were examined histologically, histochemically and by electron microscopy. In addition, the serum and liver copper concentrations, measured in three animals, were found to be low. Histologically, the hepatocytes exhibited cloudy swelling, and numerous haemosiderin deposits were seen in the hepatocytes and Kupffer cells. Staining with p-dimethyl amino-benzylidene-rhodamine revealed distinctly fewer copper granules than normal. Histochemically, 3,3'-diaminobenzidine-H2O2 st…

Experimental transmission of malignant catarrhal fever to red deer (Cervus elaphus).

Malignant catarrhal fever was transmitted from affected to recipient red deer (Cervus elaphus) using blood or lymphoid suspension as inoculum. Incubation periods ranged from 11 to 26 days. The disease was also transmitted using lymphoid suspension stored overnight at 4 degrees C or at -70 degrees C for 8 months. The experimental disease was characterised by fever, depression, anorexia, diarrhoea and dysentry. The course of the disease was approximately 96 hours. Major lesions consisted of acute mesenteric lymphadenitis and acute haemorrhagic typhlitis and colitis. Lesions in the caecum and col…

Pan-American Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) trinaperronei n. sp. in the white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann and its deer ked Lipoptena mazamae Rondani, 1878: morphological, developmental and phylogeographical characterisation.

BACKGROUND: The subgenus Megatrypanum Hoare, 1964 of Trypanosoma Gruby, 1843 comprises trypanosomes of cervids and bovids from around the world. Here, the white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann) and its ectoparasite, the deer ked Lipoptena mazamae Rondani, 1878 (hippoboscid fly), were surveyed for trypanosomes in Venezuela. RESULTS: Haemoculturing unveiled 20% infected WTD, while 47% (7/15) of blood samples and 38% (11/29) of ked guts tested positive for the Megatrypanum-specific TthCATL-PCR. CATL and SSU rRNA sequences uncovered a single species of trypanosome. Phylogeny based …

Evidence of Powassan/deer tick virus in adult black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) recovered from hunter-harvested white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Pennsylvania: A public health perspective.

Studies reporting tick infection rates for Powassan virus (POWV), an emerging zoonotic arthropod-borne pathogen responsible for POWV disease in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, are limited. To determine the presence and ascertain a statewide prevalence of POWV, ticks were collected from 9,912 hunter-harvested white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) heads presented to six regional Pennsylvania Game Commission Chronic Wasting Disease sampling stations in early December of 2013, 2014 and 2015. Of the 2,973 ticks recovered, 1,990 (66.9%) were identified as adult Ixodes scapularis (black-legged…

Reconsidering the Alberta study of the closure of the Red Deer supervised consumption site.

Supervised consumption sites (SCS) are interventions supported by decades of evidence and yet remain subject to considerable politicization. Recently, researchers from Alberta, Canada published a study in the journal Addiction that sought to assess the impacts of the closure of a SCS in Red Deer, Alberta. The study authors reported that the closure had no negative health impacts while increasing uptake of opioid agonist treatments among former clients. However, the study suffers from numerous methodological shortcomings that call the validity of the findings into question, including but not li…

Noninflammatory hypotrichosis in white-tailed deer and raccoons in the eastern United States.

Noninflammatory hypotrichosis includes a spectrum of disorders with 2 phenotypes: follicular or ectodermal dysplasia. Here, we describe 6 follicular dysplasia cases in 2 wild adult male raccoons (Procyon lotor) and 4 wild yearling or adult white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and 1 case of ectodermal dysplasia in a captive-reared stillborn male white-tailed deer, all from the eastern United States. All cases had regional or body-wide hairlessness. Skin hyperpigmentation was observed in those with follicular dysplasia. The stillborn fawn also had multiple developmental defects, including…

Meta-analysis of global prevalence of hepatitis E virus infection in deer.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important zoonotic pathogen, and deer serve as a potential wildlife reservoir capable of contributing to human infections through wildlife-livestock-human transmission pathways. Accurate estimates of HEV prevalence in deer are essential for understanding zoonotic risks and informing surveillance strategies. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search across five major databases. Among 134 publications screened, 33 studies met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis. Pooled prevalence estimates were calculated, and subgroup analyses were performed by …
