We present a series of QM/MM calculations aimed at understanding the mechanism of the biological dehydration of glycerol. Strikingly and unusually, this process is catalyzed by two different radical enzymes, one of which is a coenzyme-B12-dependent enzyme and the other which is a coenzyme-B12-independent enzyme. BACKGROUND: Hypernatremic dehydration is a complication of preterm infants with reportedly high morbility. In preterm infants, this happens due to a combination of low fluid intake, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and immaturity of kidney function. Semipermeable membranes are self-adhesive membranes that can be applied as an artificial skin to reduce TEWL.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of one week dehydration heat exposure on thoracic aorta reactivity in rats. L-Arabinose is an abundant resource available as a waste product of the sugar beet industry. Through use of a hydrazone-based strategy, L-arabinose was selectively dehydrated to form a chiral tetrahydrofuran on a multi-gram scale without the need for protecting groups. This approach was extended to other biomass-derived reducing sugars and the mechanism of the key cyclization investigated. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of a range of functionalized chiral tetrahydrofurans, as well as a formal synthesis of 3R-3-hydroxymuscarine.

Hypernatremic dehydration is a rare but serious clinical condition in newborns and small infants. It is usually caused by diarrhea, improperly prepared infant formula, decreased fluid intake, or exclusive breastfeeding. Symptoms are usually masked until neurological symptoms occur. Congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (CHPS) is a common condition in infancy associated with smooth muscle hypertrophy and resulting in pyloric outlet obstruction. The final diagnosis of CHPS is based on precise ultrasonographic measurements of length and width of the pyloric muscle. Based on our clinical and sonographic experience, we observed that smaller measurements of the pyloric muscle were obtained in dehydrated infants than in children examined after proper fluid restoration. The clinical importance of these observations was evident because false-negative results could be obtained.
