In patients with newly diagnosed untreated grade I-II hypertension, EEG oscillations were recorded under conditions activation of the two basic motivational systems, defensive motivational system and positive reinforcement system, evoked by recall of personally meaningful emotional events. The 64-channel EEG and cardiovascular reactivity (beat-by-beat technology) were simultaneously recorded. At rest, hypertensive patients had significantly reduced platelet serotonin concentrations in comparison with healthy individuals. The patients experiencing emotional activation were characterized by sign

Risk-taking is subject to considerable individual differences. In the current study, we tested whether resting-state activity in the prefrontal cortex and trait sensitivity to reward and punishment can help predict risk-taking behavior. Prefrontal activity at rest was assessed in seventy healthy volunteers using electroencephalography, and compared to their choice behavior on an economic risk-taking task. The Behavioral Inhibition System/Behavioral Activation System scale was used to measure participants' trait sensitivity to reward and punishment. Our results confirmed both prefrontal resting

Broiler breeder chickens show apparently abnormal behaviours when subjected to routine quantitative food restriction during rearing. By using a combination of videorecording and radiotelemetry, this experiment addressed the question of whether such behaviours are associated with de-arousal. In each of 2 years, 3 female chickens had radiotelemetry devices (Data Sciences) implanted surgically at 12 weeks of age, for measuring putative physiological indices of arousal (heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, telencephalic EEG). Subsequently, when caged individually and moving freely, they w

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To investigate the complaint of unrefreshing sleep with study of sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients with chronic fatigue.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen successively seen patients (mean age: 41.1 9.8) who complained of chronic fatigue but denied sleepiness and agreed to participate were compared to 14 controls (33.6+/-10.2 years) who were monitored during sleep recorded in parallel. After performing conventional sleep scoring we applied Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) for the delta 1, delta 2, theta, alpha, sigma 1, sigma 2, beta EEG frequency bands. The pr

BACKGROUND: There are regional differences in the effects of anaesthetics agents and perioperative stimuli on the EEG. We studied the topography of the EEG during induction of anaesthesia and intubation in patients receiving thiopental and fentanyl to document regional electrical brain activity.
METHODS: EEG was recorded in 25 patients in the awake state, after pre-medication, during induction, at loss of consciousness and after intubation. Eight bipolar recordings were made and the relative power of the frequency bands delta, theta, alpha, and beta were used (after z-score transformation for

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that temporal prediction processes are associated with phase resets of low-frequency delta oscillations in a network of parietal, sensory and frontal areas during non-rhythmic sensory stimulation. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) modulates perceptually relevant brain oscillations in a frequency and phase-specific manner, allowing the assessment of their functional qualities in certain cognitive functions like temporal prediction.
OBJECTIVE: We addressed the relation between oscillatory activity and temporal prediction by using tACS to

Prefrontal brain regions have been proposed to modulate vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) through their action on subcortical structures. This study aimed at investigating the beat-to-beat influence of the brain cortex over the heart through a high temporal resolution estimation of brain-heart coupling. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) from 32 scalp positions were recorded at rest for 5 min in 38 participants. To assess beat-to-beat cortical control on vagal activity, the longest and shortest inter-beat intervals (IBIs) were identified for each participant. Th

While the influence of the mother's voice on neonatal heart-rate response and its relevant activity on cerebral cortex and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are well known, few studies have assessed its influence on respiratory activity. We investigated the relationship among the respiration rate, the delta wave amplitudes through electroencephalography, and the basal state of ANS through the respiratory variability index while 22 full-term neonates hear their mother's voice and an unknown voice. It was found that when respiratory variability was large, a transient (<5 s) change in respiratio

Oscillatory entrainment to the speech signal is important for language processing, but has not yet been studied in developmental disorders of language. Developmental dyslexia, a difficulty in acquiring efficient reading skills linked to difficulties with phonology (the sound structure of language), has been associated with behavioural entrainment deficits. It has been proposed that the phonological 'deficit' that characterises dyslexia across languages is related to impaired auditory entrainment to speech at lower frequencies via neuroelectric oscillations (<10 Hz, 'temporal sampling theory').

PURPOSE: The aim of our work was to describe the initial electroencephalographic characteristics of Rasmussen's syndrome (RS).
METHODS: We performed repeated EEG recordings in an 11-year 5-month-old girl affected by RS, as demonstrated through the progressive evolution of the illness. All EEGs were carried out in polygraphy and videorecordered, both in waking and in sleep.
RESULTS: In our opinion, our patient's EEG picture is absolutely unusual in childhood partial epilepsy form without any neuroradiologic perturbation. Delta focal activity persistence in such a clinical context should be co

In view of the hypothesis that adenosine is involved in sleep regulation, the effects of the adenosine antagonist caffeine on sleep and sleep EEG were investigated in eight young males. Compared to the placebo condition, caffeine (100 mg) administered at bedtime prolonged sleep latency and reduced sleep efficiency and stage 4 of non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS). Electroencephalographic slow-wave activity (SWA, spectral power density in the 1.75-4.5-Hz band) was reduced, whereas power density in the spindle frequency range was slightly enhanced. The suppression of SWA was limited to the fir

1. Two types of hypoxic delta activity were observed in ECoG records of dogs subjected to exsanguination, sudden cardiac arrest resulting from ventricular fibrillation or mechanical asphyxiation, as well as during post-hypoxic recovery. They were polymorphous delta activity (PDA) and "standard slow complexes" (SSCs). 2. These two types of delta activity were found to differ from each other as to the shape of the potentials; their amplitude in monopolar and bipolar leads; the cortical areas in which the activity exhibited the highest amplitude; the degree of manifestation in the cortex and subc

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities are seen in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with characteristic features of cognitive impairment. The most common findings of EEG features in AD and MCI patients are increased relative power of slow oscillations (delta and theta rhythms) and decreased relative power of fast oscillations (alpha, beta and gamma rhythms). However, impairments in cognitive processes in AD and MCI are not sufficiently reflected by brain oscillatory activity in a particular frequency band. MCI patients are at high ri

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can induce posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE), but early biomarkers for epileptogenesis are lacking. We aimed to investigate electrographic biomarkers before and during posttraumatic seizure development.
METHODS: We used a repetitive diffuse TBI model in mice with continuous video-EEG monitoring up to 4½ months postinjury.
RESULTS: Twenty-five percent of mice developed posttraumatic seizures (PTS) with highly variable latency (5-126 days postinjury). Most significantly, we identified fast ripple-delta DOWN state coupling as an early biomarker that was detect

BACKGROUND: Atogepant is a novel oral calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist approved for the preventive treatment of migraine. While its peripheral mechanisms are well characterized, little is known about its potential effects on central functional brain networks. This study aims to investigate changes in resting-state functional connectivity (FC) using high-density EEG (HD-EEG) after one month of atogepant treatment in patients with migraine, and to assess the relationship between these changes and clinical response.
METHODS: Twelve patients with high-frequency episodic

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a syndrome characterized by recurrent depressions that occur annually at the same time each year. We describe 29 patients with SAD; most of them had a bipolar affective disorder, especially bipolar II, and their depressions were generally characterized by hypersomnia, overeating, and carbohydrate craving and seemed to respond to changes in climate and latitude. Sleep recordings in nine depressed patients confirmed the presence of hypersomnia and showed increased sleep latency and reduced slow-wave (delta) sleep. Preliminary studies in 11 patients suggest th

Electroencephalographic (EEG) findings in syncope are reviewed. There are four major categories of syncope: neurally mediated (neurocardiogenic), neurologic, decreased cardiac output, and orthostatic hypotension. However, regardless of cause, whether the syncope is due to a vasovagal effect, a cardiac arrhythmia, an epileptic seizure, or hypotension, EEG findings are similar and reflect cerebral hypoperfusion. Initially there may be a slowing of background rhythms. This is followed by high amplitude delta activity, maximal anteriorly. If the hypoperfusion persists there is subsequent flattenin

INTRODUCTION: Throughout the world, smoking is one of the principal causes of preventable death. Nicotine, the primary active component of tobacco, acts as a psychostimulant, and modulates the electrical activity of a number of the areas of the brain involved in addiction. Abstinence from nicotine will also impact the functional state of the brain, which is reflected in symptoms of craving and susceptibility to relapse. In addition, given the increase in the sympathetic tone of the heart and pulse rate promoted by nicotine, its consumption can contribute to tachyarrhythmia.
METHODS: The prese

Here, we investigated whether educational attainment influences the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying vigilance regulation, as reflected in resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms, in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's (PDD) and Lewy body disease (DLB). Clinical, demographic, and rsEEG data were obtained from an international database, including PDD patients (N = 75), DLB patients (N = 50), and cognitively unimpaired older controls (Healthy; N = 54). Each group was partitioned into low (Edu-) and high (Edu+) educational attainment subgroups, matched for

BACKGROUND: Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPWS) causes an accessory pathway between the atria and ventricles, in parallel with the atrioventricular node and the bundle of His; it causes a "short circuit" that deregulates the physiological pacing and causes tachycardia. A case of WPWS is described in a patient with cocaine, alcohol, and tobacco consumption.
CLINICAL CASE: A 34-year-old man with a regular history of cocaine, alcohol, and tobacco use for 14 years presented with paroxysmal palpitations, chest pain, and shortness of breath. ECG 1 revealed supraventricular tachycardia with delta
