Substance P and CGRP expression in dental pulps with irreversible pulpitis.

The purpose of this study was to compare substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) expression in pulp tissue with clinically diagnosed symptomatic and asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis. Healthy pulps acted as controls. Five normal pulps and 40 with irreversible pulpitis (20 symptomatic and 20 asymptomatic) were obtained from 45 different patients. SP and CGRP expression was determined by competition binding assays using enzyme immunoassay. anova and Mann-Whitney tests were used to ascertain if there were statistically significant differences between the groups. The results s

Bioinspired smart dentin ECM-chitosan hydrogels for dentin-pulp complex regeneration.

OBJECTIVES: Approximately two-thirds of the world's population suffers from dental caries, and clinical treatment of the resulting lesions varies from dental fillings to devitalization. Despite recent advances in regenerative endodontic therapy, scaffolds intended for the regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex with innate odontogenic potential and microarchitecture similar to these dental tissues are still scarce. Taking advantage of the physio-biological properties of demineralized dentin extracellular matrix (ECM), we developed a functional hydrogel that combines insoluble molecules of dent

Correlation of dental pulp stones, carotid artery and renal calcifications using digital panoramic radiography and ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: The human tissues continuously undergo modification as deposition of calcium (CA) salts either in an organized or disorganized pattern. The latter pattern usually occurs in the soft tissues such as in arteries, brain, kidneys, lungs, and dental pulp. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the presence of pulp calcification and carotid artery calcification (CDC) as a marker for renal calcification and altered serum biomarkers such as serum CA, phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Digital panoramic radiographs of 50 patients with the presence of p

Pulp/Dentin Regeneration: It Should Be Complicated.

Stem cell-mediated regenerative endodontics has reached the human clinical trial phase; however, many issues still exist that prevent such technology to be a widely used clinical practice. These issues are not straightforward and are complicated. They should be because pulp regeneration is dealing with a small dead-end space. In addition, when regeneration is needed, the space is often heavily infected. The true standard of pulp regeneration should be everything except generation of some fibrous connective tissue and amorphous mineral deposit. As of now, we are still far short of reaching the

Impact of intercellular adhesion molecule 1-positive dental pulp stem cells in deep caries progression.

AIM: Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) regulate immune responses; however, their heterogeneity in deep caries remains unclear. This study aimed at investigating the role of intercellular adhesion molecule 1-positive DPSCs (ICAM1+ DPSCs) within the immune microenvironment of deep carious pulp tissue to develop therapeutic strategies. METHODOLOGY: Single-cell sequencing was used to compare cellular profiles between deep caries and healthy pulp tissues. ICAM1+ DPSCs were quantified using immunofluorescence/flow cytometry in human/mouse models and sorted for functional analyses. Odontogenic differen

Comparing the quality of anaesthesia in normal and inflamed teeth by pulp testing.

Failure to achieve complete anaesthesia of teeth with acutely inflamed pulps is a well-known clinical symptom. In this study, we compared the quality of anaesthesia in intact and inflamed mandibular teeth by using an electric pulp tester. Thirty patients with inflamed lower teeth, which had spontaneous or night pain, were selected; two healthy teeth in the same quadrant were used as control teeth. Electric pulp testing and thermal tests were made on each inflamed and control tooth. Teeth were then anaesthetised by inferior alveolar nerve block and electric pulp tests were repeated on inflamed

Differential diagnosis and therapeutic approach to periapical cysts in daily dental practice.

The diagnosis and therapeutic approach to periapical cysts is an extremely controversial concern for dentists. Furthermore, as this complaint represents the most frequent cystic lesion of the maxilla, together with the fact that its differential diagnosis with chronic apical periodontitis presents special difficulty, the question takes on even greater importance. The purpose of this article is to assess the validity of the various diagnostic techniques used to differentiate between both pathologies and make a critical analysis of the controversy surrounding the therapeutic approach to suspecte
