Clinical and Laboratory Performance of ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative in Primary Teeth: A Systematic Review of Pediatric Evidence.

Background and Objectives: ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative is a resin-ionomer hybrid marketed as a bioactive material for pediatric restorations, yet its specific performance in primary teeth has not been systematically synthesized. The study aim was to evaluate clinical and laboratory outcomes of ACTIVA in primary dentition compared with established restorative materials. Methods: Following a PRISMA-aligned, OSF-registered protocol, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched to 18 October 2025 for full-text clinical trials and in vitro studies involving ACTIVA in primary teeth or primary d

Autogenous Demineralized Dentin Graft With High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid in Ridge Preservation: Pilot Trial.

OBJECTIVE: The current trial assessed for the first time radiographic and histological alterations, following alveolar ridge preservation (ARP), using autogenous demineralized dentin graft carried in 0.2% high molecular weight sodium hyaluronate (ADDG+HA; test group) versus autogenous demineralized dentin graft (ADDG, control group) alone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty patients (n = 30) with non-restorable single-rooted teeth were randomly assigned into two groups (n = 15/group). Following extraction, ARP was performed using either ADDG solely or ADDG+HA. Bucco-lingual alveolar ridge width (BL

Elastic discontinuity due to ectopic calcification in a human fibrous joint.

Disease can alter natural ramp-like elastic gradients to steeper step-like profiles at soft-hard tissue interfaces. Prolonged function can further mediate mechanochemical events that alter biomechanical response within diseased organs. In this study, a human bone-tooth fibrous joint was chosen as a model system, in which the effects of bacterial-induced disease, i.e. periodontitis, on natural elastic gradients were investigated. Specifically, the effects of ectopic biomineral, i.e. calculus, on innate chemical and elastic gradients within the cementum-dentin complex, both of which are fundamen

Human pulp reaction to dentine bonded amalgam restorations: a histologic study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the human pulp response to Scotchbond Multi Purpose Plus (SMPP) bonding agent in non-exposed Class V cavities. METHODS: SMPP was placed in 24 of 40 cavites according to manufacturer's instructions and the cavities were restored with amalgam. The remaining 16 cavities were capped with a calcium hydroxide formulation (Dycal) sealed with zinc-oxide eugenol, and restored with the amalgam. After extraction at 10 and 35 days, the teeth were fixed, sectioned and stained for light microscopy. RESULTS: All Dycal-capped teeth, at both 10 and 35 days,

Pulpal evaluation of two adhesive systems in rat teeth.

Formocresol is the agent most frequently used with pulpotomies in primary teeth, but its use is currently under discussion in regard to its possible toxic effects. Some current works suggest the use of dentinal adhesives in cavities with minimal dentinal thickness and even in small pulpal exposures. Our objective was to evaluate pulpal response to the application of two dentinal adhesives Syntac and Prime & Bond NT in pulpal exposures in rat teeth. Sprague Dawley rats were used, male, 150 to 200 gm in weight. The maxillary first molar, left and right, was employed in each case, a total of twel

Age estimation from canine volumes.

Techniques for estimation of biological age are constantly evolving and are finding daily application in the forensic radiology field in cases concerning the estimation of the chronological age of a corpse in order to reconstruct the biological profile, or of a living subject, for example in cases of immigration of people without identity papers from a civil registry. The deposition of teeth secondary dentine and consequent decrease of pulp chamber in size are well known as aging phenomena, and they have been applied to the forensic context by the development of age estimation procedures, such

RANK, RANKL and OPG expressions in a permanent molar with a replacement resorption.

The aim of this study was to explore the expression of RANK, RANKL and OPG during ankylosis. Structural details and immunohistochemical investigations of the expression of RANK, RANKL and OPG in an extracted secondary retained permanent molar of a 12-year-old girl are reported. Woven and lamellar bones were observed in the thickness of the remodeled dental wall and a tertiary dentin was noticed around the pulp cavity. The resorbing multinucleated cells expressed TRAP and RANK but few of them also expressed RANKL. Both odontoblasts and osteoblasts expressed TRAP and RANK, but the expression of

Dental histology in familial expansile osteolysis.

The dental histopathology is described of patients suffering from Familial Expansile Osteolysis (FEO), a rare and unique autosomal dominant disease which has severe bony as well as dental consequences. The predominant dental features are resorption of the cervical and apical regions of the roots, premature depositions both of irregular secondary dentin, which causes narrowing of the pulp cavities, and of cellular cementum, which causes patchy narrowing of the periodontal ligament. The dental pulp shows age-like changes, including multiple pulp stones and the ligament vasculature appears to be

Enlarged occlusal surfaces on first molars due to severe attrition and hypercementosis: examples from prehistoric coastal populations of Texas.

During an examination of prehistoric samples from the Texas coast, individuals consistently exhibited a suite of traits on the first molars that included severe wear, hypercementosis, and resorption of the buccal margin of the alveolus. The occlusal surface of the tooth was worn below the cervical margin, with the subsequent incorporation of the buccal surface of the buccal roots into the occlusal plane. This expanded occlusal surface, which extends the buccal surface beyond the normal edge of the tooth, is composed of a combination of original enamel, secondary dentin, and cementum. There is

Histologic and clinical assessment of long-term pulpal-periodontal therapy.

A 20-year follow-up of cases published in 1959 involving the treatment of pulpal-periodontal disease suggests the following: 1. The periodontal results have been stable except for one case of root resorption and one case in which there was gingival recession with no pocket formation. 2. The histologic evidence in the resorbed case would suggest that repair had occurred with the formation of new bone, ligament, and cementum. 3. There was also evidence from the histologic sections that the inflammatory response was localized to the region of the apical foramen. 4. There was secondary osteocement

BMP-7 gene transfer to inflamed ferret dental pulps.

In vivo and ex vivo gene transfer are being developed for localized skeletal regeneration. These strategies for tissue regeneration were tested in an adult ferret model of vital pulp therapy. In this model a reversible pulpitis was induced first. Then after 3 d, the pulps were directly infected with recombinant virus or implanted with ex vivo transduced autologous dermal fibroblasts. The genome of the recombinant adenovirus contained a full-length cDNA encoding mouse bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-7 (AdBMP7) or bacterial beta-galactosidase cDNA (AdlacZ). The BMP-7, but not lacZ, ex vivo tran

Dental findings in osteogenesis imperfecta: II. Dysplastic and other developmental defects.

Orthopantomograms of 49 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) classified according to Sillence were examined for dysplastic dentin defects and other developmental abnormalities of the teeth. Thistle-tube-shaped pulps in the permanent teeth were observed in five patients. Four of them had pulp stones in several teeth. Apically extended pulp chambers were present in 3/49 patients, and the structure of the mandible was cystic in 1/49. These defects occurred in patients with type I or unclassifiable OI and were mainly not associated with type I dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). The prevalence r

Mineralized deposits in pulps of incompletely developed permanent monkey incisors after pulpotomy with tungsten carbide fissure burs.

The exposed pulp of incompletely developed permanent incisors of nine monkeys were treated with partial pulpotomy with tungsten carbide fissure burs on an air turbine equipment. The pulps were capped with calcium hydroxide (Dycal) followed by insertion of conventional amalgam. The results were studied by conventional light microscopy after 1 and 6 months. Rod-like mineralized pulpal deposits were seen in five of the nine animals, in 9 out of 67 teeth, evenly distributed at the two observation times. Also the lengths of the deposits appeared similar, while the thickness had increased markedly a

Root agenesis in developing canines as a complication of intranasal antrostomy.

A case is reported in which the roots of both maxillary canines failed to develop, a defect that could be traced to antral surgery when the patient was 8 years of age. The differential diagnosis of such a finding is proffered. The maxillary antrum is described, and aspects of the surgical procedure, the nasal antrostomy, used in this patient are discussed. A brief outline of current thought on the mechanisms of eruption of teeth is appropriate, and treatment of the symptomatic tooth is mentioned.

Pulp response to and cariogenicity of Lactobacillus casei in monoinfected gnotobiotic rats.

The maxillary molar pulps of germ-free rats were mechanically exposed and suspensions of a strain of freshly grown Lactobacillus casei were applied to the pulp wounds. The pulps were left open to the oral environment, and the animals were maintained within the isolator until death. In the majority of teeth, pulp necrosis was evident and apical inflammation was present in 40% of the specimens. The remaining monoinfected animals were bred and the litters were placed on a 46% sucrose diet to determine the cariogenicity of the test strain of L. casei in the mandibular molars. The organism proved t
