Wireless Sensing-based Daily Activity Tracking System Deployment in Low-Income Senior Housing Environments.

Maintaining independence in daily activities and mobility is critical for healthy aging. Older adults who are losing the ability to care for themselves or ambulate are at a high risk of adverse health outcomes and decreased quality of life. It is essential to monitor daily activities and mobility routinely and capture early decline before a clinical symptom arises. Existing solutions use self-reports, or technology-based solutions that depend on cameras or wearables to track daily activities; however, these solutions have different issues (e.g., bias, privacy, burden to carry/recharge them) an

Muscle Pathology in Dystrophic Rats and Zebrafish Is Unresponsive to Taurine Treatment, Compared to the mdx Mouse Model for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Inflammation and oxidative stress are strongly implicated in the pathology of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and the sulphur-containing amino acid taurine ameliorates both and decreases dystropathology in the mdx mouse model for DMD. We therefore further tested taurine as a therapy using dystrophic DMDmdx rats and dmd zebrafish models for DMD that have a more severe dystropathology. However, taurine treatment had little effect on the indices of dystropathology in both these models. While we and others have previously observed a deficiency in taurine in mdx mice, in the current study we sho

Falls and resulting fractures in Myotonic Dystrophy: Results from a multinational retrospective survey.

Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 multisystem involvement leads to functional impairment with an increased risk of falling. This multinational study estimates the prevalence of falls and fall-associated fractures. A web-based survey among disease-specific registries (Germany, UK and The Netherlands) was carried out among DM1 ambulant adults with a total of 573 responses retrieved. Results provided a risk ratio estimation of 30%-72% for falls and of 11%-17% for associated fractures. There was no significant difference for falls between male and female, but there was for fall-related fractures with a hi

Interaction of Sepsis, Disuse, and Aging on Skeletal Muscle Function and Remodeling in Male and Female Mice.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is associated with skeletal muscle weakness and atrophy, particularly in older and immobilized patients; however, how sepsis interacts with disuse, reloading, aging, and biological sex remains poorly defined. METHODS: Young (5 mo) and older (20 mo) male and female C57BL/6J mice underwent cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) or sham surgery followed by hindlimb suspension (HLS) or normal ambulation (NA) for 7 days (Experiment 1). A separate cohort underwent 3 days of reloading after HLS (REL; Experiment 2). Outcomes included survival, body mass, soleus force-frequency, myofiber

Beyond the Diagnosis: A Comprehensive Case Report on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive genetic disorder characterized by the absence of dystrophin, leading to progressive muscle degeneration and generalized weakness. It primarily affects males in early childhood and progresses to loss of ambulation and cardiac and respiratory complications. CASE REPORT: This case report describes a 26-year-old male with terminal-stage DMD who was admitted to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) in a critically ill state with multiple-organ failure. He was ventilator-dependent via tracheostomy, hypotensive, anemic, and req

Decoupling Behavioral Domains via Kynurenic Acid Analog Optimization: Implications for Schizophrenia and Parkinson's Disease Therapeutics.

Kynurenic acid (KYNA), a putative neuroprotective agent, modulates glutamatergic pathways in schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease but is limited by acute motor activity impairments (e.g., ataxia). Research leveraging animal disease models explores its structure-activity relationship to enhance therapeutic efficacy while mitigating adverse effects, addressing global neuropsychiatric disorders affecting over 1 billion people. Structural analogs of KYNA (SZR-72, SZR-73, and SZR-81) were designed to uncouple therapeutic benefits from motor toxicity; yet, systematic comparisons of their acute beha

Helminth infection alters mood and short-term memory as well as levels of neurotransmitters and cytokines in the mouse hippocampus.

UNLABELLED: Helminthic infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality in many developing countries, where children bear the greatest health burden. The ability of parasites to cause behavioral changes in the host has been observed in a variety of host-parasite systems, including the Taenia crassiceps-mouse model. In murine cysticercosis, mice exhibit a disruption in the sexual, aggressive and avoidance predator behaviors. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to characterize short-term memory and depression-like behavior, as well as levels of neurotransmitters and cytokines i

The antidepressant-like effect of Hedyosmum brasiliense and its sesquiterpene lactone, podoandin in mice: evidence for the involvement of adrenergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic systems.

We have recently shown that the ethanol extract of the leaves of Hedyosmum brasiliense exhibits an antidepressant-like effect in the tail suspension and forced swimming tests in mice. The present study investigates the mechanisms involved in the antidepressant-like effect of H. brasiliense extract, together with the antidepressant potential of podoandin, an isolated sesquiterpenoid. H. brasiliense (50mg/kg, i.p.) and podoandin (10mg/kg, i.p.) decreased the immobility time in the forced swimming test, without any accompanying changes in ambulation in the open-field test. The anti-immobility eff

[Drug Dependence and Cytotoxicity of Law-evading Drugs: Their Identities Explored from Basic Research].

Cases of people experiencing disturbed consciousness or dyspnea, causing traffic accidents, or requiring ambulance transport to hospital due to abuse of law-evading chemical substances have become a serious social problem in Japan. Most law-evading herbal products are marketed as incense or herbs and consist of finely chopped, dry vegetative matter mixed with chemical substances (drugs). Analysis of the chemical substances in these herbal products has demonstrated that they contain synthetic cannabinoids. Because there are many cannabinoid compounds, even if a particular drug is regulated, sim

[Prevention of venous thromboembolism in surgery].

Incidence of postoperative deep venous thrombosis extends from 7% (transurethral prostatectomy) to more than 50% (hip surgery) depending on the magnitude of trauma and due to the corresponding surgical procedure. Although more common with higher age, younger patients suffer from postoperative thromboembolic complications as well. This insight leads to the conclusion that all immobilized adult patients or those needing an operation are to receive thromboembolic prophylaxis should there be no contraindication. As 50% of all postoperative thromboses develop sometime during the operative procedure

Hip-Flexor-Suppressing Pendular Gait Strategy Facilitates Walking Recovery After Lesser Trochanter Fracture in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report.

Delayed recovery of limb advancement is a common challenge after lesser trochanter fractures due to impaired hip flexor function. We report a case of an elderly patient who regained walking ability using a hip-flexor-suppressing pendular gait strategy. A 79-year-old man sustained a femoral neck fracture with concomitant lesser trochanter avulsion. Postoperatively, active hip flexion was limited, and conventional gait patterns were difficult. Instead, the patient adopted a compensatory strategy characterized by trunk forward inclination and pelvic rotation, enabling pendular advancement of the

Cemented Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty as a Treatment Modality for Pathological Fracture in the Proximal Femur Metastasis Without the Recurrence of Primary Breast Cancer: A Case Report.

Metastatic lesions in the proximal femur are well-known in the literature and are important since they can progress to pathological fractures and impair the patient's mobility. We present the case of a middle-aged female with a history of breast carcinoma 20 years ago, who experienced diffuse chronic hip pain for the past two months. Radiographs, MRI, and PET scans revealed a metastatic lesion in her proximal femur. After consulting with an oncologist, it was determined that adjuvant chemoradiotherapy was unnecessary. The treatment strategy was dependent on the preoperative general health cond

Kinematic and kinetic analysis of running in children with cerebral palsy.

Computer-based analysis of gait was used to study walking and running in 19 children with spastic-diplegic cerebral palsy (CP) and 15 healthy control children. Temporospatial parameters, kinematic and kinetic data were compared and contrasted between groups for both types of gait. The majority of children with diplegic CP, who are independent ambulators, are able to run. These children increase their velocity by increasing their cadence, a mechanism that is distinct (and presumably less energy efficient) from that used by healthy children. Sagittal-plane kinematic and kinetic profiles at the a

Orthopaedic management of the lower extremities in spina bifida.

Myelodysplasia is a multisystem disease that requires a multidisciplinary approach. The orthopaedist is often the first to identify a changing neurologic picture or deformity and must work closely with neurosurgical colleagues to identify correctable neurologic lesions. The role of the orthopaedist begins at the birth of the child with spina bifida. At this time, the level of neurologic involvement can be determined. Education of the parents can then begin by outlining the expected ambulatory potential of the child, and predicting deformities or complications that might be anticipated dependin
